By now, if you are an active member in the Supergirl fandom community, you are undoubtedly aware that there is a lot going on with the Supergirl fan base. Division, attacks, collusion, planning, tweeting, posting, retaliation and so on. There is much that is dragging our fandom's reputation through the mud.

I want to give you a place where you all can come and discuss what is going on but I am going to set up some additional ground rules for this thread to help keep things more friendly because this could get out of hand very fast.

FIRST: There is a very easy tendency to make claims against certain groups that will generalize that group to a particular opinion. Please don't do this. For example: (Olicity "Oliver and Felicity shippers" all hate Laurel). That is clearly not true and no one could ever possibly know that. Its a sweeping generalization that causes those that are Olicity members who don't hate Laurel to become defensive. So please don't use sweeping generalizations in your observations.

SECOND: As much as possible, temper your emotions and take a moment to breathe before responding. We are discussing complex, difficult issues here. Issues that are reflected in the real world and have very real consequences. We are discussing topics here that have deep personal connections to a wide variety of people. You'll never know if your comment, however innocent you may feel it is, actually affects someone on the other side of the screen. So let's take a moment to note that these issues are very VERY complex and require care when brought up in conversation. Breathe and above all, be respectful.

FINALLY: My scrutiny meter on these posts is going to be at a maximum on this. If I feel, for whatever reason, that a post is in anyway hurtful, derogatory or attacking I am just going to delete it. I'll start tossing posts like Kobe hits three pointers (I'm not a basketball guy I have no idea if that analogy makes sense).

ADDITIONAL: (1) when speaking of LGBT+ to not make general assumptions about the community, especially for those not a part of it and (2) users who aren't LGBT+ should avoid speaking on behalf of the community.

Please be respectful and uphold the reputation of this site as a bright spot in the Supergirl fan community.
You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun, Kal. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.

Oh and on the note of the Kevin Smith twitter incident from yesterday, the man went out of his way and responded to a hateful tweet. He was not tagged in the original tweet by the op, so how he found the tweet...who knows. The response he got from angry twitter fans yesterday is all on him. I'm not sure what he expected to happen by responding to hate tweets; he literally put himself in that ridiculous situation.

That being said, I'm not advocating for those initial disgusting tweets, but I am saying that he should have never given them the attention they clearly seek.

kevin smith has 3.22 million followers on twitter. so if you post pic of himpic I am sure he would be alerted. And since he is huge fans of both AK and Joss he was like thats all I needed to do was like Mon-EL?
his reply

reply from the original poster

and Kevin's reply to that

so it wasnt exactly like he decided to pick a fight with someone, the hate came his way.

Alerted by who exactly? Twitter only alerts you if you're tagged/mentioned, and he wasn't. So I guess someone else tagged him. He could have very well ignored it. He knew that tweet wasn't meant as a good thing to that op but he decided to engage with them regardless. Why? Nothing good was going to come of it for him. I don't think he realized what he was getting himself in to.

If you as a person see something online about yourself you either ignore it and move on or you address it. He chose to address it. He may not have decided to 'pick a fight' but he did decide to involve himself with those crazies. And looking at those tweets under his replies, a lot of them aren't hate directed at him but at what's happening in the show. The original tweets are disgusting (as I've already stated) but if you take a look at the replies, that hate isn't directed at him but the rather the show.

My question to all is are there really that many fans who dislike Mon-El or are they just very vocal? Personally, I enjoy him. I think there is a great on-screen chemistry between Kara and Min-El. I believe t hat the EPs made a mistake in rushing the romance. They could have let develop over two seasons. That may have allayed angry fans.

Argo

If i may, i believe it is a combination of both. The dislikers of his character are many and are yes, quite vocal. It is just unfortunate that their voices are drowned out when the few irresponsible people, take things far too far. Of course this can be said of any fandom and it does depend on the SM platform

If they had kept their relationship as the mentor and student rather than a romantic one, then i won't lie i could have eventually gotten on board with them had they eventually gone romantic. As things are it doesn't work. I guess one silver lining of this is that in terms of an "endgame relationship" the way Karamel has been written and portrayed says to me that they won't be that.

I think it is both. The vocal ones really dont like what the writers did to both his and Kara's characters especially with regards to the romantic relationship. If the romantic part had been pushed off after he moved passed being a jerk (so he was not activly being a jerk to his girlfriend who we like) it might not have been as big a thing.

I have seen though a number of sites that do episode / season / character / write ups and re caps mention a lot of their issues with the writing of the character as well as the season (mostly the second half). So I do think there are a good number who did not like his character from the perspecive of how he was written as well as how he seemed to become the focus of the show and Kara / Supergirl was was relagated to a prop for him. Most of these that I have read actually either totally skip any other ship dicussion or mention it just in passing (ie: dropped the POC for a slave owner, liked supercat but that wont happen, liked supercorp but that wont happen, etc). So it is not just vocal shippers although that is for sure out there.

If you want to explore what their issues were outside of the ship wars just google something like supergirl's mon-el problem and you will find a bunch of them.

@Brierrose

I would suggest hopping into the thread and say as a fellow SC/KM/Sanvers fan (which ever is approptiate) reply by first removing the actor/writer/producer from mentions and ask them to chill. as a part of this segment I dont condone it.

When I see a KM fan getting to heated I usually just mention muting or blocking the attacking person and move on.

I hate to bring in more problems, but I think it requires attention. A fan on twitter has essentially stalked Melissa and Chris and found out where they live in Vancouver. This is a whole other level of bad behavior and I have no idea how to approach this. People have called out the person on twitter (even Ken, a well-known paparazzo among the fandom, has expressed his distaste for this person's actions).

Any ideas on how to approach this sort of behavior? People have called them out already, should we leave it at that?

this is too far.

I would step away from it as it might actually get into legalities.

Horrid. But the actors can probably take care of themselves. If they feel bothered I'm sure there are numerous legal actions they can take.

I can not see how anyone from SC Fandom can say Mon-El or karamels are hateful. I mean Where is it?

The prove is crystal clear to everyone to see its all some from the SC fandom doing the hating and acting immature and toxic.

It is from them writers gets harrassed
It is from them Chris is attacked Daily and got chased off Twitter
It was from them Jeremy got attacked
It was from them Smith got attacked
It was from them Leanne got attacked
It was from them Rahul Kohli got attacked

Just go to any new Tweet the official SupergirlCW Twitter posts. Or Supergirlstaff and writers. Its full of posts with hate for Mon-El and karamel. I see no Mon-El fans or karamel shippers write hate against sanvers or Lena/Katie there.
All they do is defend their favorites against the vile hate from SC fandom.

OH MY GOSH! You really didn't read all of what was said in this topic thread did you? We've gone over all of this already. An ample amount of examples of some Karamels being awful were provided not only by myself but by others even including the Admin, but you somehow overlooked all of it. Why is that?

And of course once again here you are making generalizations of the entire SC fandom. Did you not read the rules Admin provided for us to follow in this thread either?

If there is anything to this, it will be taken care of and whatever measures are needed to take care of it will be taken. This happens a lot, and it is something that they deal with on a daily basis. The people replying to those tweets are only giving them what they want.......attention.

I have read them they are good rules. But i am honestly truthful. I have never seen Mon-El or Karamels filling official SupergirlCW Twitter or Supergirlstaff Twitter account with replies of huge amount of toxic hate some of the SC fandom does.

All i see is appreciation from them there and them defending their faves from some of the SC fandom

But if you truly have seen the opposite. Be my guest show it here that they have done that. Because when i look there i honestly do not see it.

I can not see how anyone from SC Fandom can say Mon-El or karamels are hateful. I mean Where is it?

It's possible that karamels are more likely to be attacked because their ship is cannon. It actually happened on the show, so it's harder to ignore than Supercorp which isn't. I haven't researched this, so I could be wrong, but I think cannon shippers are less likely to lash-out at other ships because they got what they wanted.

Also Mon-El is seen by many as the Scrappy so many feel that he "doesn't deserve her"

That being said shipping wars are stupid. It's not like you can win, and attacking others within the fandom only makes the fandom look bad.
Don't assume malice when stupidity is an adequate explanation. At least, not the first time.

It's great to see the fandom on this site coming together to try to spread positivity. But I think we've gotten off topic with the discussion of Mon-El's character.

This thread was meant to discuss our fandom and the negativity surrounding it. I think it'd be best to start a new topic thread for those of you who would like to share your thoughts on Mon-El; I'm sure there are plenty of opinions to be had.

Quoting Rschick: "SB, your character analysis of Mon-El is slightly flawed actually. I submit he wasnt a spoiled frat boy at all, he was a victim of severe child abuse his entire life. Look how Rhea treated him, he was a living playdoll to her; summoned before her and subjected to her whims (wedding ceremony) and put away back into his cell when she was done with him at gun point. His behavior early on was that of a man that never experienced any sort of freedom at all in his life.

The lyrics from metallica's 'the unforgiven' come to mind when I think of him
New blood joins this earth
and quickly he's subdued
through constant pained disgrace
the young boy learns their rules

with time the child draws in
this whipping boy done wrong
deprived of all his thoughts
the young man struggles on and on
he's doomed

all of his behavior is a direct result of this terror he lived. Its why when Kara agreed to fight Rhea in single combat he was terrified, not because he thought Kara wouldnt win, its because this to him must have been his worst nightmares come to life. the figure of his life long torment was coming for the woman he loved."

That is a very insightful analysis which I had not considered. Thanks for sharing.

I disagree as mon-el is the central character of the division. to discuss the discord among the fandom the topic of mon-el will surely come up.

Yes he is the central character of division. But this thread wasn't meant to get into character analysis. It was created as a "place where you all can come and discuss what is going on" in the fandom. Character analysis and fandom behavior should be two separate threads in my opinion.

"But to those who do dislike Mon-el, I am really puzzled by your reaction. Many of the comments in this discussion have mentioned slave-holding, abusive relationships, and even misogyny. What I find troubling is this emphasis on what Mon-el was, rather than on what he is becoming. His arc this season was redemptive. He has developed from a spoiled brat, essentially, into a person who by the end of the season was willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good. I find that a very compelling story and I think it is really quite sad that some focus on his character at the beginning of the season and dismiss who he had become by the end. This development, by the way, was inspired by Supergirl herself and to me encapsulates a lot of what the show is about. He is on a journey, and I really encourage people to reassess Mon-el as a redeemed character who I anticipate will become even more so in the next season."

Not sure if this is the thread for this but - posting it anyway:
I don't disagree with this. My problem with it (and by it I mean the presentation of the Mon-El character) is that all of this - this what he was (slave holding / potentially abusive / misoginistic (yeah - I have no idea how that is spelled and neither does spell check)) is what he was WHILE he was in a romantic relationship with Kara. I wish his redemption arc could have played out with him changing for him (with Kara as a teacher / mentor), because it was the right thing to do, because he learned, or evolved, or whatever. But sticking him as the romantic partner of Kara / Supergirl while this was going on totally changed his dynamic (to the character's detriment IMO). It diminished Kara in the process because of how he treated her and diminished his evolution.

OK - no worries - I was responding to something on this thread (which is what actually motivated me to comment initially) that others had responded to so figured it was an Ok place. Either way is cool though so thanks fo the heads up.

I understand. Mon-El is a hot button topic and everyone here has an opinion on him. I just think it'll be better to separate the discussions as things can get heated rather quickly.
