I thought that it might be nice to have one place to discuss the character of Reign as we progress through this season. While I'm a bit sad about the character turning evil, I am very eager to see the extent that the writers will go with the villain. She has the possibility of being quite the formidable foe for Supergirl.

Perhaps we can start with some facts about her that we know at the moment and add to the list as we find out more details.

I'll start a list and I can add to it later. Even though the character exists in the comics, I thought that it might be better to keep those facts off the list until they present themselves as we're not sure what aspects the writers will use from her comic book counterpart. But, feel free to discuss any aspect of the character.

I gues we need to prepare for tears. Sam turning into Reign will not be pretty and the impact on the people who love her will be devastating. And the fans...... Odette is really doing a fantastic job and I cannot wait to see the black side of her. Still there are tears.

I think the idea of Sam as a facade will be the thing that the evil scientists were hoping for, but will be proven wrong. I want her to fight this. And fight this hard, and for us to see parts of her fighting it throughout the season.
We're on opposite ends for what we want to see happen on this scenario, SuperMatt :D

Moral quandary for Kara. Can she punch someone whose being brainwashed to commit terrible acts?
I think she'll be able to punch her but, the question is will she have difficulty finishing Reign off knowing the situation? The scenario would be almost exactly the same as her fight against Alex in Season 1 when Alex was under the myriad mind control. That's one reason why I don't want her or someone else to be able to talk Sam out of it; been there-done that already with Alex. Perhaps, this is where Supergirl's weakness is when fighting Reign and that's why Mon-El and crew have to step in.

I think thats what I was trying to get at. If you put Reign for prison with a life sentence, your condemning Sam to a life sentence too, although she did nothing to deserve it. As for Sam becoming a hero after? I dont think so. I think it may be something they have set up for Ruby in the future. You can age her up by taking her to the Legion in the future for safety, bring her back '7 years later' or whatever the age world killers get their powers.

Anyhow I do think the 'offspring was an unfortunate error' line may come back to bite the evil scientists. Its just me but I think Ruby might be able to have the powers without the programming or whatever.

I think the situation is more Bizzarro than Mind Controlled Alex. Alex was not brainwashed (brain washing is what is done to teenage terrorists); her body was taken over by someone else. That is why, apart from the fact that she is her sister and someone she loves dearly, that Kara had trouble with Alex.

However, Bizzarro was created as an antagonist for Kara. And, here too Kara had trouble. Not that she pulled any punches; but she tries to take care of her and redeem her.

I think she will feel sorry for Reign as well. But, I do not think she will pull her punches if Reign is a threat to other humans or to anyone she loves.

I am sorry for Ruby; and I am sorry to lose Sam. It might be interesting if Reign comes back and takes over Sam's life. What Lena thinks of her. I wonder if the "it is genetics" thing will have an influence on Lena. I don't want it to because "it is genetics" is a horrible eugenics based trope. Still, might be interesting to see her struggle with it.

Considering I am not that looking forward to having a teen in the fourth season (even though I feel sorry for the kid and the actress kid is good--she reminds me so much of my young cousin, I feel like I am watching her, which while I love her, I don't appreciate on a TV show), I'd be happy if the Legion did indeed take her to the future.

Rewatching right now.

"Do you feel that?"

"Your pulse?"

"You are my heart."

That just struck me. I think it's interesting, perhaps a slight foreshadow that, in the end, Ruby will somehow help Sam be redeemed. Reign/Sam may still die in the end, but die as Sam... not Reign... because Ruby was the one thing unforeseen by the scientists.

Kelly, I really believe you hit on something highly significant with Kara’s and Sam’s hearts. Hopefully, it plays a significant role in the upcoming episodes.

Im wondering how reign will react to ruby. It's possible she'll just ignore her, but I have a feeling that she'll hate her, seeing her as the annoying little creature that delayed her awakening.

'Supergirl' Villain Reign Is The Badass TV Comic Book Baddie You'll Actually Want To Root, bustle.com article.

I like quote from the author of the article which is 100 percent right in my estimate

". Fans won't be rooting for Reign to destroy the world; they'll be rooting for Sam to claw her way back and take control of her life and body again. We were made to care about this woman for a reason!"

Thats my sentiments exactly. I want not only to be Supergirl vs Reign but also Sam vs Reign.

Soooo... Will Reign know Kara's secret? Has someone already asked and answered that?
I was wondering that, too, evrafter. Sam doesn't know so, I'm not sure how Reign would know unless they implanted some type of bloodhound gene into her DNA when they made her :D.

The sneak peak got me even more confused. Apparently Sam is acting confused when waking up? I think Reign is active when she goes out in front of other people besides Ruby, to prevent her from saying things, and Sam is only active inside the house probably.
Yeah, I'm trying to stay away from watching the rest of the sneak peaks - not an easy feat!

I was a big Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan back in the day and I remember the season when they had a god, Glory, put into the human body of a man named Ben. They would basically shape shift into each personality throughout the season and it seemed very random when it happened (no rhyme or reason). And when she took over his body, he wouldn't remember a thing that she did and vice versa. I wonder if they'll do something similar with Sam and Reign.

I really think that Ruby and Colville will play a significant roles in the Reign arc. I am not sure what it is. This is a gut feel. Also, if it follows some of the comic book storyline, Reign may not die. All is conjecture and I certainly would like Sam to take back control.

Argo

What people are seeming to ignore is that Coville said he met a kryptonian priestess on earth that Kara somehow didnt scoop up during her fort rozz purge. Anyway thinking that might be significant later.

Also..Someone should update it for Reigns body count. She's killed at least 12. This is probably life imprisonment for Sam even if she gets cured now.

While a nice point about the priestess, SuperMatt, I think that Sam as Sam would not be held responsible for those deaths. I am also thinking that Morgan Edge must be a little nervous realizing that it wasn’t Supergirl shooting heat vision at him.

I'm not sure how Reign's identity will be revealed. But I think it will be easy for Kara, and whoever else finds out, to see that Reign and Sam are as different as night and day.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if they found out because Ruby steps in the way of Reign trying to kill Ruby's hero, Supergirl. This may cause Sam to rise to the surface, even if it's just temporarily.

I think this would cause Ruby to become a target for Reign, as she would stand in the way of her complete dominance over Sam's body.

Either way, Ruby will be important in Sam's story. As infuriating as she was, particularly in episode 2, there is a distinct reason Sam has a daughter. Whether she's Sam's strength, Reign's weakness, or some combination of the two.

I'm more interested to see how the individual characters react, and decide to proceed, once Reign's identity is revealed. All of them know Sam, at the very least through the Christmas party. The production team said the cast would be conflicted about how to deal with Reign. I think we can clearly expect Lena to be sympathetic to her friend. Kara...I'm honestly not sure. She became tight with Sam, really quick, but she's also been on the receiving end of Reign's brutality...and that can give her a different perspective than the sympathetic one she may normally have. I think one or more DEO team members will want to just take Sam down. Probably J'onn, due to his experience and trauma from White Martians. Alex is another one I'm torn on. I feel like, normally, she'd want to go for the kill. But knowing Sam, and especially with the bond she's formed with Ruby...I just don't know.

And that's exactly why they've developed Sam and Reign as they have, this year. It seemed like a slow build, being a 4-5 episode build before she ever became Reign. The only other villain, in the ENTIRE CW DC multiverse, who's been even mildly sympathetic, was Deathstroke. And sympathy for him went out the window really early, once we saw the monster he became. And Reign is still unique, because while Reign is entirely guilty of her actions, Sam remains innocent.

I am curious to see if Sam actually figures out who she is and what she is doing before everyone else does. It may be a situation where she makes the connection and realizes that she is unable to control it. If she does, then perhaps she would try and place Ruby somewhere safe from her, like with Alex (even though I'm not really too keen on that happening). Then, we see Sam falling deeper into becoming Reign - to the point where Sam's persona is no longer active. Having Ruby watch that fall would definitely pull at the heart-strings if they're wanting to go that route.

As far as how the DEO reacts, my guess is that J'onn, Mon-el, Imra and Brainiac will all be in favor of stopping Reign, without regards to who she is as Sam. I also think that Lena, Winn and James will want to try and save her. It's Alex and Kara who I'm not quite certain on. If they stay true to who the characters have been in the past, then Alex would be with J'onn et al. I can still recall her telling Kara in Season 1, that she may have to kill Astra and that soldiers kill, sometimes, if they have to. Of course, you add to that what she told Kara about being cold and the fact that Reign tried to kill her sister, then my bet would be that she would want Kara to be safe at whatever cost. Of course, Kara's natural instinct has been to be merciful and not kill. That said, the wrench in the whole thing is Kara's questioning of humanity, her brush with mortality due to Reign and the influence of Ruby on both Alex and Kara.

I think there will be a point where Sam figures out she’s the one who almost killed Supergirl and is causing all the destruction. I think it will happen before anyone else figures it out. For a time she’ll try to handle it on her own but eventually she’ll send Ruby away and go to her friends Kara and Lena for help. Remember in S3E5 Kara told Sam as a reporter she has a contact in government agency. Kara will convince Sam to let the DEO help her and Sam will go willingly. Sam will spend a few episodes in containment while the team including Lena tries to help her. Then Reign will break out of the DEO and Sam will be gone. The team will make one last effort by using Ruby but it won’t work. In the end everyone is heartbroken but realizes Reign must be stopped.

The more I think about it, the more conflicted I have become on Sam/Reign. I like Sam as a character and I think that she could be an asset to Kara as a friend, really much better than Lena (did I say that out loud ;) ).

BUT, gosh I really would like for her to stay Reign, long-term, and be a threat past this season. They have done such a good job showing her to be a formidable opponent, that I hate to see her being redeemed, even at the end of the season.

Odette is a wonderful actress and it would be a shame to lose her after this season.

I'm a firm believer that Sam's story will be a tragic one. The exec producers have not hidden that. It's been touted from the beginning. Somehow, Reign and Sam will be written out. Whether they are killed, destroyed, exiled to the Phantom Zone...whether Sam sacrifices her self to take Reign with her.
I haven't read or watched any of the preseason material, did the EPs state then that Reign would have a tragic end?

This Reign is very different from the comics. She's essentially Kara's version of Doomsday. In the comics she didn't have a civilian alter ego. She was just one being, Reign. And the purpose behind her creation, as well as exactly who created her, aside from her origin being Kryptonian, is unknown. She also doesn't have the basic Kryptonian power set like she does in the show.
What was her power set in the comics? I have to admit, I'm not too thrilled with having another Superman plot used for Supergirl. If Reign is from the Supergirl comic then I really don't understand why they would not pull from it rather than Superman.

We know her origin and purpose, at least partially, in the show. She was created by a sect of Kryptonians who worshiped their old gods. As for purpose, she believes herself to be some sort of dark, divine justice.

As of yet, Reign has yet to hurt somebody completely "innocent", aside from Kara, who straight up challenged her. But I can see her vision of justice being warped or manipulated to do the bidding of other entities, whether it be her creators, or even Edge. I'm just curious what her, or her creators', long term goal is. It's got to be more than "Reign punishes evil doers".
I wonder if, with Reign it is or at least will become more about her wanting to rule rather than just be an instrument of justice. Power corrupts and perhaps she was created to delve out justice but, after defeating Supergirl and now being the most powerful in the city, she decides to re-direct her mission into being one of self-promotion - possibly even eventually believing herself to be one of the gods. In that theme, I would see Edge as one who would see an opportunity to gain more power via Reign and jump on board the Reign ship.

The ending of Episode 10 had me pondering a question, what is Reign's status as main villain for the rest of Season 3?. With other Worldkillers coming does Reign just become part of the group and there's actually a Bigger Bad out there that we haven't seen as yet?. With development of the Samantha to Reign story-line this season I would assume her to be the season long villain but now I'm not so sure.

How do others see this playing out in regards to Reign's future role?.

I think Reign will still be the leader; and this reveal just gives Team Good some breathing space while Reign goes in search of her fellows; it'd probably also would lead to a spectacular finale and may be getting another Superman cameo.
Reign has friends and they might be coming to play! :D If they do bring them on and they show them to be of equal strength and evilness, then it could turn into a very fun play date.

My guess would be that, because Sam/Reign has been in the show throughout, she will be made to at least appear to be the leader. Although, from what that evil Kryptonian woman (do we actually know her name or title yet?) said, the other World Killers have already been in existence and Reign just now proved herself. Generally speaking, one doesn't become leader when first brought onto a team, but who knows. Perhaps she's more powerful and takes charge just because of that. Unless, Kara and team turn her back to Sam and she helps bring down the rest of them, which I really hope doesn't happen.

Reign technically still takes orders from that hologram and maybe that kryptonian priestess next episode too. Yeah, I wonder how much development these other worldkillers will get, or if its going to be Astra's army all over again. Also in the comics Reign said 'only a world killer can defeat a world killer' so I wonder really too bc if thats true, then it will have to be Sam dying heroically in the fight against the World killers I imagine.
