I thought that it might be nice to have one place to discuss the character of Reign as we progress through this season. While I'm a bit sad about the character turning evil, I am very eager to see the extent that the writers will go with the villain. She has the possibility of being quite the formidable foe for Supergirl.

Perhaps we can start with some facts about her that we know at the moment and add to the list as we find out more details.

I'll start a list and I can add to it later. Even though the character exists in the comics, I thought that it might be better to keep those facts off the list until they present themselves as we're not sure what aspects the writers will use from her comic book counterpart. But, feel free to discuss any aspect of the character.

Thanks for that evrafter! I hadn't seen that and it makes some sense now.

In the background it looks like Krypton was exploding, doesn't? Which would imply that Sam was put into the pod at the same time that Kara was also put into one. Since both Kara and Sam appear to be close in age, that would mean that Sam's pod must have gotten stuck in the Phantom Zone like Kara....or she has some slow-aging genetics ;)

At SDCC Odette said that Reign’s pod made it to Earth straightaway like Superman’s. Sam is 35/36, like Clark and Kara she looks younger. Odette is actually 32.

Cccrrrraaaaapppp!! Crap crap crap CRAP!!

I just rewatched this week's episode and.... I... LOVE... SAM!! Like.. I would watch a show entirely based on her character. Odette is really good--smooth, believable dialogue deliverance, good facials, just seems like a solid character.

Crap! Crap! Crap! Crap! This is gonna sucketh.

I'm already feeling sad about it......BUT DAMN, THAT IS WHY IT IS SO FREAKING GOOD..........holy crap what a storyline.

There's always the very real possibility that Reign could threaten Eliza. Max basically did the same thing in Season 1 when he disclosed to SG how much he knew about her family. I hope they don't go that route as it is t oo obvious of a cliche in television storytelling. But, it does make me wonder if, when Samantha fully emerges as Reign, will she know that Kara and Supergirl are one in the same? If so, will that stay a secret or will she possibly let Lena know ;) ?

The writers have gone out of their way to point out some parallels between Samantha and Kara ie., being adopted, both being active in swimming. Will the writers show other commonalities between the two characters?

One last thought, going along with what Kelly proposed about Sam being a genetic clone of Kara's: there's been talk about Alex adopting Ruby at the end but, if it is true that Sam is related to Kara genetically, will Kara feel a sense of obligation to take in Ruby, especially if there is a possibility of Ruby having powers? Maybe Kara and Alex raise Ruby together?

Thanks, Brierrose. She looks closer to Kara's age but, I suppose that is because Melissa and Odette are closer in age. But, you can't always go by appearances as Chyler doesn't look 35, either. That woman has some good genes!

evrafter - I feel for ya! :( The fact that I have already began to feel a bit of an attachment for the character says a lot about Odette's acting ability. She's my favorite new addition to the show so far.

Yeah that reminded me, if Sam and Kara are related then Ruby might be Kara's niece of a sort. And I do see Alex taking in Ruby bc of all the talk about kids plus if she does have powers, the DEO is probably her best hope for integration into a normal life after her mom became a super villain.

Yeah, I wonder if they will keep up Sam's characterization...I dont want it all to go out the window when she becomes Reign. Like maybe show us that Sam is still in there somewhere.

Nice thread Sully.

Something dramatic must happen to Samantha in Episode 7 if she becomes Reign in Episode 9. Given that Samantha is unlikely to be in Episode 6 (Midvale) or Episode 8 (Crossover) it will be interesting to see what happens. I thought they wouldn't introduce her Reign persona till about Episode 15 so they are certainly moving faster than I anticpated.

- Powers exhibited
Invisible to bullets

I may be wrong but is that meant to read Invulnerable to bullets?.

Well in episode 7 Sam does go to her (adoptive) mom for answers and I bet that she will have the pod that Reign was sent in and that is where she will get the suit and stuff but I bet her powers work kinda like killer frost`s

With Reign there is a huge part of me that wants them to go full on scary as heck villain, in that you think she is coming back to Sam, and then BAM.....no she doesn't, with a laugh. Full on fight to the death at some point. I love Odette, but the power of those scenes, and the impact on Kara would be something we have never seen before.

Then there is the part of me that wants at the very last minute for Sam to return, but then....no, because we would miss out on some spectacular drama and acting.

That would be scary if Reign would be the kind of villain to screw with Kara's head like that. By pretending to be Sam for a second just to get a sucker punch in.

Anyway glad to see people want Sam to come in... but with the Middle episode I'm guessing no Sam this week and we have to wait until next week to see how it develops further.

I don't know that I want Sam to come back as Sam for good.....IMO, that would be very anti-climatic and absolutely no risk taken by the writers.

That would be so evil for Reign to pretend to be Sam!

As much as I’m liking Sam and Odette seems like a really good actor, she’s having no problem keeping up with Melissa or Katie, I want Reign to be un-redeemable. Let’s have a part where Sam’s fights the transformation perhaps with Kara and Lena’s help. But once she loses the battle for her humanity I want full on unequivocally evil Reign.

100% agree, if the writers do not go this route I think the writers have missed an opportunity, IMO, that shows them willing to take a huge chance on allowing the audience to fall in love with a character and then have that character go full rogue villain. I don't want another Astra story, already did that....

Considering the emphasis on sisters, I think it is possible Sam has Alura's genes (and may be both Alura's and Zor El's genes) rather than Kara's. Thematically, then she would be Kara's sister. (Using Kara's genes to create her would make her technically, Kara's daughter).

Agreed, Kara and Sam being “sisters” fits better. I’ll add this to that thought if Lex is Ruby’s father then Lena is Sam’s sister in law. Was it foreshadowing when Kara said the three of them are sisters.

Actually if Sam is Kara's 'Sister' and if Lex is the father of Ruby

Wouldn't that make both Kara and Lena as aunts of Ruby?

I think the idea of Sam as a facade will be the thing that the evil scientists were hoping for, but will be proven wrong. I want her to fight this. And fight this hard, and for us to see parts of her fighting it throughout the season.
We're on opposite ends for what we want to see happen on this scenario, SuperMatt :D

Moral quandary for Kara. Can she punch someone whose being brainwashed to commit terrible acts?
I think she'll be able to punch her but, the question is will she have difficulty finishing Reign off knowing the situation? The scenario would be almost exactly the same as her fight against Alex in Season 1 when Alex was under the myriad mind control. That's one reason why I don't want her or someone else to be able to talk Sam out of it; been there-done that already with Alex. Perhaps, this is where Supergirl's weakness is when fighting Reign and that's why Mon-El and crew have to step in.

The new trailer for Reign is out, and it looks like I was right about Reign pretending to be sam. She has a really 'cold' look on her face when walking through the office and also appears to be ignoring Ruby. Also the shirt rip was pretty cool!

Mentioned this in the Reign trailer on the News Page; it could be that we're only seeing her be Reign but, the Sam persona is also still active. I'm hoping that it's just Reign but, who knows. I'm just excited to see the materialization of the character and her impact on Supergirl (literally! :D )

Yeah its probably just Reign pretending to be Sam. Im kind of worried because this means that if Reign later discovers Kara is Supergirl....it will kind of be like season 1 of the Flash where Thawne was among them the whole time and just one step ahead of Barry the entire time. Also she might try to make it hard for Kara at work too.
I'm okay with Reign being just one step ahead of Supergirl for awhile. It sets the stage for more suspense and intrigue as we progress through the rest of the season. It also makes Reign more realistic as a threat.

Yeah, my guess is that it's going to take a few episodes for SG to figure out that Reign is Sam. It'll be interesting to see what event gives Sam away because I think it is difficult to distinguish that Reign is Sam with the mask on; which is in contrast to Kara's "disguise" :) .

Thanks for that article, Kiwi. It was a good read. Right now, I am not rooting for the villain in the respect that I want Sam to re-emerge. Quite the opposite, actually. If Reign is played out for an extended time and is shown to be an almost unbeatable foe for SG during that time, then yes, at the end I will be rooting for Sam and SG. But, at the moment, I am rooting for her to live up to her potential as Reign.

So, I am going to assume that since Reign is of Krytponian origin, she is vulnerable to kryptonite, too, correct?

I really think that Ruby and Colville will play a significant roles in the Reign arc. I am not sure what it is. This is a gut feel. Also, if it follows some of the comic book storyline, Reign may not die. All is conjecture and I certainly would like Sam to take back control.

I read the original comic story and yes, Supergirl is initially was hurt. The comic and TV characters are different and so, how Sam turns out is a mystery. IMHO, there is a clue when Sam tells Ruby that she (Ruby) is her heartbeat. My thought is that Ruby will be the impetus to Reign’s end. I do not know whether she will die or what, but it will be tragic nonetheless.

I definitely agree that the Legion will take on Reign. I am not so sure that Reign’s concept of good and evil is the same as ours. She would not say to Supergirl “ I am going to kill you.” She has a different structure of what needs eradication. I am looking forward to what is a World Killer’s mission.
