Title: Midvale
Directed By: Rob Greenlea
Air Date: November 13th, 2017 8pm The CW
Written By: Caitlin Parrish & Jess Kardos

Official Description: Kara and Alex head home to Midvale for a little R&R. While there, Kara recalls a painful memory of a childhood friend’s death and how that traumatic experience brought the Danver sisters closer together. Izabela Vidovic plays Young Kara and Olivia Nikkanen plays Young Alex in flashbacks.

Reoccurring Cast: Eliza Danvers (Helen Slater)
Guest Stars: Olivia Nikkanen (Teenaged Alex) | Izabela Vidovic (Teenaged Kara) | Josie (Eliana Jones) | Mr. Bernard (Mik Byskov) | Sheriff Collins (David Chisum)

Special Notes: This episode is going to be a big flashback to Midvale High. Heavy with amazing sister action, we'll get to see how the girls were getting through high school, including a scene with the girls fighting over bathroom time and a hair straightener. Kara and Alex will set aside their differences in popularity to uncover a mystery unfolding at their school that resulted in the death of a student (a character named Kenny) and the injury of another (named Mark), as well as a conspiracy held by their teacher, Mr. Bernard. Josie, Alex's friend who views Kara as an unpopular dork, holds a clue to Mr. Bernard's secret in a trade for a good recommendation letter to Berkley. What Mr. Bernard is up to and just how Kara and Alex will solve the case is still unfolding!

The Buffy musical episode is widely considered the standard for TV musical episodes and I think “Midvale” will become the standard for TV flashback episodes.

Bravo to Olivia and Izabela, it’s very hard to come in and play a different age version of an already established character. These young women are very talented and clearly did their homework in order to do what they did, remember their names folks they’re going to be around for years to come if they chose to be. I’m sure Melissa and Chyler happily answered any questions and couldn’t be prouder of their young counterparts. The casting department at Berlanti productions deserves a raise for not only finding actresses that physically resembled their adult counterparts but have similar acting chops.

I loved Eliza and Kara’s talk, more for Kara to think about that I’m sure will come into play later. Very cool that Eliza was reading a book by Cat. Alex was totally right to call Kara a hypocrite for saying that she should talk about her feelings only hours after breaking off an engagement. I’m glad that Kara didn’t seriously fight back on that or anything else Alex said, as Kara said it was Alex’s turn. Awesome that Alex knew her sister would come to save her, it reminded me of her literal leap of faith in “resist”.

I think Eliza just thought the FBI showed up because Kara used her powers. If J’onn had shown up looking like Hank Eliza would’ve NEVER let him alone with Kara. I do think it was kinda mean of J’onn to show up as Alura, he could’ve just been a female FBI agent and probably had the same impact, I suppose PTB want to use Erica as much as possible. That’s twice he’s shown up as a long lost parent.

I get how some people didn’t understand how Alex could go from being angry with Kara to not the next morning, here’s my thought on that. Alex was drunk the night before and things do tend to look different in the sober light of morning. Alex did in fact get the good night sleep that she didn’t realize she needed, Kara was right about that much. Both sisters have some things to think about and I was happy the left Midvale with lighter hearts singing to Gwen Stefani.

She may find it too backward to be interested in it. History/Reporting/Writing etc. on the other hand would be just as challenging as it would have been on her planet, so I can see her going for it. I was a bit surprised she was not more interested in Earth history; but I think she was still dealing with her loss and hating on Earth at the time.
Yes, I think her lack of desire to learn Earth's history, more specifically, American history is based on the fact that she didn't feel a connection with Earth, humans or the United States. She was a foreigner, angry at the world and was determined not to form any type of bond with the place that she didn't want to be.

Why did the sheriff try to kill Alex and Kara with the car? Sure, they were investigating, but at that point in the story he didn't know about the laptop, and Alex and Kara thought it was the teacher, so what was his motive?
Good point. The "who done it" was not that difficult to figure out early on but, this episode wasn't really supposed to be a murder mystery, just a mystery within a drama portion of a superhero show :).

Perhaps we need a flashback episode of Kara's first meeting with Kelly so she can be properly remembered.

Even if I'm not concerned about the ratings, I'm also happy Supergirl is steady.

I'd think those who were vocal about "quitting" the show are most likely the same people who don't watch and just keep talking trash hoping it helps getting the show cancelled.

For all the ranting and raving that Sanvers shippers were quitting the show, and that people were boycotting Supergirl due to the Kreisberg fiasco, the ratings actually had a small uptick this week.

Makes me happy.

Another great episode, the best one of season 6 so far. Better Snellville than Snellville. There was one minor continuity flaw, though. Early in the flasbac scenes, Eliza says Jeremiah is at work, but John shoes up in disguise to speak to Kara. Did the DEO tell Eliza that her husband had died, is this before or after MM took Hank Henshaws place?

Thinking back, I think this episode explained more than anything why Kara would consider Alex her home but not her adoptive parents.

Eliza (and Jeremiah) were always great to her, but they probably reminded her too much of what she had lost; of her parents. Add to that any guilt she might feel about "betraying" her parents by showing even the slightest amount of love to a new set (even though Eliza has said that she doesn't intend to replaced Kara's parents) and it is understandable why she would close herself off from Eliza and Jeremiah, while still appreciating their support.

The rest of human culture must have seemed something that was pushed onto her. Especially since she expected to live with Clark and take care of Clark and instead Clark left her with these new folks she didn't know; and now everyone is asking her to be human. This is a girl who lost everything: not just her parents and her friends, but her planet and her culture. She must have wanted to hang onto whatever she had of her culture as tightly as possible and reject human culture so that she can keep Krypton sacred.

Hence the need to reject school and just hang out with Clark and be Super. Clark after all is her only remaining connection to Krypton; and someone she knew (as much as you can know a baby) and loved in Kryton. She is a teen and probably doesn't understand that Clark here is not actually a kryptonian; but a human in Kryptonian skin and that they would have as much of a cultural gap as her and Eliza. And she would doing what her mother said she would do (be a hero) rather than whatever weird earth things her new guardians are asking her to do.

She was actively seeking and trying to save Krypton in her mind while rejecting Earth.

But Alex. Alex was the only thing that didn't remind her of Krypton or her loss--because she was someone new and just herself, a new relationship that Kara has never had; and was too self absorbed--like most teens are I suppose--to actually cater to Kara's loss.

As the only thing outside of Krypton, Alex probably intrigued Kara at the beginning. And, she could feel with Alex the way she couldn't feel with any of the others--Eliza, Jeremiah, even Clark and of course her high school folks. So, she probably paid a lot of attention to Alex, not the least because Alex was "saddled" with babysitting her through high school.

All that little competition, "try and keep up" and fighting with Alex was not I think Kara just being Kryptonian Kara; but Kara imitating Alex and trying to meet Alex in her own terms. It is what I have seen younger siblings do when they don't get the elder's attention (which is pretty much always). Or, at least, that is what my sister did. She used to just follow me around and then irritate me by doing stuff I hated and fight with me. And I was pretty much always trying to leave her behind (I was a horrible elder sister in my teens).

In that discussion with Kenny at the school cafeteria, it is pretty clear Kara wants Alex to notice her and appreciate her despite that talk about invisibility.

Hanging out with Kenny might have helped, but he was still a stranger.

And then, Kenny died, and Kara had Alex spending time with her and actually appreciating her for her abilities and finally trusting her to save her. Probably the first time Kara ever felt happy with her life. The first time ever she felt at home and as if she belonged after she lost Krypton and her parents.

That feeling must have continued and built on as the years progressed. Pretty solidly given the ending. :)

As for Alex: She was also feeling a loss (much less catastrophic than Kara but bad enough in Earth terms). She lost life as she knew it, her parent's attention (quite bad for a 14-year old) and then, her father whom she worshiped. And since the first two happened because of Kara why not blame her for all three. Easier to do than dealing with the loss and moving on.

Even without that, having take care of a younger sibling all the time is irritating for a teenager.

Having to then face rejection from friends she hoped to count on and getting support from the one whom she had been rejecting all this while may have shown her where her priorities should lie. (Not that she was all set against her; she did look out for Kara even before; by chasing away bullies at the lunch line). The Kenny episode showed her Kara is the one person she can always count on; and the one person with whose support she can get through anything.

Leading us to the closing scene with the Danvers on the balcony. I think that scene put a nice punctuation on the entire story by emphasizing both what they mean to each other and why they mean so much to each other.

It doesn't mean (and I know some folks are looking askance at this) that all their issues are resolved. It just means that they have remembered what they still have and are counting their blessings. The moment of silence, retreat and simpler times made them remember that the world has not still ended. And that they can still count on each other.

Doesn't mean the conversations are over either. They are just not ready to speak about things yet. But, that is okay. For the moment, silence is what is needed.

Question for you all:

Why did the sheriff try to kill Alex and Kara with the car? Sure, they were investigating, but at that point in the story he didn't know about the laptop, and Alex and Kara thought it was the teacher, so what was his motive? Surely more kids showing turning up dead would bring a lot more heat.

Because criminals are not always very bright? If he had succeeded, his evil deeds would have remained hidden. Was it actually his car? The damage to the side from hitting the bridge might have been significant,

Oh.. and just to add to what I said...it also explains why she lashes out at Alex when Kenny died (old life vs. new life moment) and why the only effective way to get her to stop using her powers was to have someone looking like her past (Alura) telling her that she would lose Alex (any semblance of her having a home now that she has lost everything else) if she continued to use them.

It was cruel of J'onn to use Alura's form but she was not listening to anyone else: not Eliza, (not to Jeremiah earlier) and not even most probably Clark (and it would have been hypocritical of him in her eyes if he did that). They were all using the wrong argument; threat to her life (because that is what they were worried about). J'onn used the most effective one. Threat to Alex. And had someone who looked like the person she loved the most in her earlier life to do it.

And it worked.

Kenny: well, I know why he did it--because he lacked the power and people bullied him--but voyeurism is not the best self-defense or even a decent thing to do. So, I am of two minds regarding him. He was accepting, but he also was well on the way to a life of crime. If this was a cop show, he would have ended up a serial killer some day.

Brierrose, did you get the Northern California vibe from Midvale's location?. How similar are those Vancouver Coastal Roads to Northern California?.

The roads were very similar, we have many winding two lane roads with trees on one side and a view of the ocean on the other. The forest was similar too that didn’t surprise me, Vancouver is colder but the climates are still quite similar. Midvale looked like Santa Cruze more than the other towns mentioned and would have had a university for Eliza and Jeremiah to work at. I’ll admit the pot smoking quarterback wouldn’t have been a scandal, he might not have even been suspended from the team in California or British Columbia.

Something that I caught? When they were coming from National City, the ocean was on their right. When they were leaving Midvale, the ocean was on their left. Ummm...that means they were BELOW National City. Bah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha sorry. Art teacher's attention to detail.

When they were leaving Midvale, the ocean was on their left. That means they were driving south (been there, done that). Midvale is probably North of National City. Alternatively, they were driving south to reach a pass that gets them inland to a major interstate on which they drive North.

Lived there. How can the ocean be on their LEFT if they are driving south? Are you meaning their OTHER left? ;)

I went back and looked. I was remembering the scene after the beach scene in which there is a rise to their right, which does not happen on the coast highway except in crossing canyons by diving to the bottom. You are correct; there is an earlier scene that I missed in which they are clearly driving South toward Midvale.

Doing well this morning, wasn't I. I meant right, not left.

Bah ha ha ha I seriously spent a solid 30 minutes trying to make sure I had my directions correct. lol *high fives the Captain*

Just for the record ... Alex's flight was going to Geneva.

After "Midvale", watching the Pilot episode gives me a whole great new feeling. It's nice to imagine the events of "Midvale" when Alex knocks on Kara's door before her fateful flight to Switzerland.

Alex: Why do you do this to me?

Kara: Because I'm your sister and you love me...

Awww. :D

The episode really gave us a lot of knowledge about why the sisters are that close.

So after wanting Superspeed used in last week's Episode 5 I was happy to see it used here in Episode 6, cheeky Kara speeding past Alex to use the bathroom first, cool little scene :) .
When she was running in the forest to find out who was killed, I actually yelled at the screen, "use your superspeed!"

1. I thought based on Season 1 she didn’t use her powers anymore. Obviously, she continued to use them.
. Yes, from the flashbacks that we saw in Season 1, my impression was that she was pretty much shut down, powerless ;). Also, in Ep. 1, Alex was completely stressed out over Kara using her powers because Alex knew she would get reamed by Eliza over it. But, perhaps after this Midvale mystery, Kara stopped using them again until 10 years later when Alex was in danger.

2.Jeremiah had made a deal with the devil to save her and yet, she still attracts some outside attention from the FBI.

Not sure what you mean. The FBI badge was just one of the DEO ones that can change. J'onn promised to watch over Kara and Alex when Jeremiah 'died', and he was seemingly doing just that. He caught wind of what was going on and disguised himself as the agent so he could get in and talk to her. Eliza was probably used to federal agents showing up unannounced, like with Henshaw in season 1.
Imra: "What about Tommy and Gina? 'You live for the fight when it's all that you've got!'"

Mon El: "Bon Jovi."

Imra: "Or was that all a lie?"

Mon El: "No. He speaks the truth."
