Kiwi, how's the vacation going? You better have taken mom out to dinner :D

Title: Midvale
Directed By: Rob Greenlea
Air Date: November 13th, 2017 8pm The CW
Written By: Caitlin Parrish & Jess Kardos

Official Description: Kara and Alex head home to Midvale for a little R&R. While there, Kara recalls a painful memory of a childhood friend’s death and how that traumatic experience brought the Danver sisters closer together. Izabela Vidovic plays Young Kara and Olivia Nikkanen plays Young Alex in flashbacks.

Reoccurring Cast: Eliza Danvers (Helen Slater)
Guest Stars: Olivia Nikkanen (Teenaged Alex) | Izabela Vidovic (Teenaged Kara) | Josie (Eliana Jones) | Mr. Bernard (Mik Byskov) | Sheriff Collins (David Chisum)

Special Notes: This episode is going to be a big flashback to Midvale High. Heavy with amazing sister action, we'll get to see how the girls were getting through high school, including a scene with the girls fighting over bathroom time and a hair straightener. Kara and Alex will set aside their differences in popularity to uncover a mystery unfolding at their school that resulted in the death of a student (a character named Kenny) and the injury of another (named Mark), as well as a conspiracy held by their teacher, Mr. Bernard. Josie, Alex's friend who views Kara as an unpopular dork, holds a clue to Mr. Bernard's secret in a trade for a good recommendation letter to Berkley. What Mr. Bernard is up to and just how Kara and Alex will solve the case is still unfolding!

The past segments were very well done. Good job on the young actors.

My only critique was very little happened during present day to justify why Alex and Kara felt better in the end.

For all the ranting and raving that Sanvers shippers were quitting the show, and that people were boycotting Supergirl due to the Kreisberg fiasco, the ratings actually had a small uptick this week.

Makes me happy.

I re-watched the episode and can't believe I forgot to mention how much I also loved the interaction between Kara and Alex toward the end of the episode.

"It's the first time I really understood what I had in you; what it could mean to have a sister."...
"...but, I feel at home with you."
"Always."
:)

This is the heart of the show to me and I'm so glad that the writers are going back to this relationship.

I truly enjoyed it and though we did not see much of Mel and Chyler, it was a good background story to their relationship. I thought the younger Alex really caught her mannerisms and style. It was Alex. The actress playing Kara was good, but I thought her performance was overshadowed by Alex. What amazed me as well, they even found a young actress with the same body type: hippy, curvaceous like Chyler. I am not trying to be a Harvey W. It was that I could be she was a younger version of Alex. Now for plot holes:

1. I thought based on Season 1 she didn’t use her powers anymore. Obviously, she continued to use them.
2.Jeremiah had made a deal with the devil to save her and yet, she still attracts some outside attention from the FBI.
3.their stay was supposed to be three days and instead it came across as one.

In summary, I thought this was an excellent episode and ties in well with some issues of this season and past ones. Kara’s struggle with who she is, Kryptonian or Human is a major theme this year. It gives a greater understanding of the special bond that Alex and Kara share as sisters. The end especially, at least to me, is an expression of the joy of sisterhood. The writing keeps on improving and my hope they will continue so. Already the writers exceeded last season. In my opinions it is one of the best episodes of the series. Top 10 or 20? Hard to apply a numerical quantity. It was just great.

So after wanting Superspeed used in last week's Episode 5 I was happy to see it used here in Episode 6, cheeky Kara speeding past Alex to use the bathroom first, cool little scene :) .
When she was running in the forest to find out who was killed, I actually yelled at the screen, "use your superspeed!"

1. I thought based on Season 1 she didn’t use her powers anymore. Obviously, she continued to use them.
. Yes, from the flashbacks that we saw in Season 1, my impression was that she was pretty much shut down, powerless ;). Also, in Ep. 1, Alex was completely stressed out over Kara using her powers because Alex knew she would get reamed by Eliza over it. But, perhaps after this Midvale mystery, Kara stopped using them again until 10 years later when Alex was in danger.

Yes, when she told Alex, she would rather not use her powers than risk losing her told me she stopped using them at that point.

According to the attached Wikipedia article there are 6 places called Midvale in the U.S.A. but none are in California. Located in Idaho, Montana, Ohio, Utah (which evrafter knows well), Washington and West Virginia.

And I though Midvale was in Illinois...going back to the Silver Age comics era.

Yep. Sure do, Kiwi. I pass through it weekly. It's more of a suburb. Here in the Salt Lake Valley, all the suburbs just blend into one mass. lol If it wasn't for a sign or two, you'd never know when you left one and entered another.

You may be right Robert, I'm reading the Silver Age Supergirl stories (Action Comics 252-284) currently but haven't come across where Midvale is located as yet. I do know the 1984 Supergirl movie (Side Note: Totally appropriate Helen Slater is in this episode titled 'Midvale') well though and Midvale in that was located in Illinois just below Chicago. Given that Helen's Kara Zor-El portrayal to me so closely resembled the Silver Age Supergirl it probably made sense they would set Midvale in Illinois to match the Silver Age Comics.

Gentlemen I do believe this version of Midvale will be in Northern California. National City is a stand in for Los Angeles like Metropolis is for New York City. As evidence if this I point to the earthquake in “human for a day”. Earthquakes happen on the west coast of the US. Also National City is clearly by the ocean as shown is severe episodes. Earthquake plus ocean equals west coast.

It sure looked like young Alex, Kara and thier classmates were at a beach by the ocean not a lake when Kara saved the mother and baby. When young Kara convinced Alex to go flying it looked to me like they flew over the ocean not a lake.

The sisters are driving rather than flying (by flying I mean Kara flying while carrying Alex) for pleasure and the bonding experience of road trip but to me it doesn’t make sense to do that for 2000 miles, which is the distance between LA and Chicago. A few hundred miles absolutely but 2000 takes 2-3 days. Kara told J’onn they would be away for a few days and a 2000 trip back and forth takes more than a few days.

Hopefully we’ll get some clues as to what part of the US this version of Midvale is in.

I'm thinking that Alura's appearance is the DEO under the direction of Hank Henshaw trying to trick Kara into showing that she is indeed Kara Zor el.........and she in fact does just that.

Agree, Brierrose. They were on the ocean in those initial flashback sequences in Midvale--the beach party and Daddy Danvers giving Kara her glasses. Put those with National City by the ocean, as seen when Kara diverted the missle. And then scenery of Vancouver, as seen in this week's trailers... fully fits the Northern California vibe.

Hank Henshaw already knew about Kara from the season one flashback where Jeremiah agrees to work for the DEO. Besides if Kara’s 16 in this episode it’s possible both Hank and Jeremiah are already with Cadmus and J’onn is running the DEO as Hank.

I’m thinking Santa Cruz, Carmel, or Monterey. All towns right on the ocean, enabling the kids to walk to the beach after school. And all 300-350 miles from LA/National City a nice but not too long road trip. I can’t quite tell from the preview but some of the trees look like redwoods. Redwoods do grow in Vancouver but the climate doesn’t allow them to grow to the gigantic proportions they do in California. I know this because Northern California school children learn learn about our native giant redwoods so I had a couple of elementary school projects about them. Attached is an article about Beacan Hill Park in Vancouver where California redwoods were planted 100 years ago.

Kara and Alex are my Northern California people.
