-Melissa could have agreed to guest spots as Supergirl on other shows.

I think this would be the most likely.I could very easily see her agreeing to pop in on Superman & Lois next season for a episode or two or the next big scale crossover event(this year is going to be a smaller scaled one via Batwoman and Superman & Lois).Assuming Supergirl doesn't die like Green Arrow did and I just don't feel that is the ending they would go for(I hope anyway).

1)They just did it with Arrow.
2)Supergirl is a more hopeful show and character.

-She may have heard something about the rumored Supergirl movie moving forward (as she didn't specify a particular version of Supergirl.

Possible but from her reaction,I got the impression she was talking in relation to the Supergirl show.

-This is the LONGEST shot...but I could see them using this as a red herring, ending "Supergirl", to rename the show "Superwoman", to fit both Melissa and Kara's matured status (again, this is a super long shot, but it was something I was thinking about)

That is a longer shot but very comic bookey.Superhero comic series end and then are quickly relaunched under a new title and setting.Happens all the time. It's even has been done with T.V. shows at times. All In The Family became Archie Bunker's Place for example.

I think that is very unlikely here though. It's hard to see Melissa basically continuing her role in a rebranded series long term. And even in short term for one more season, feels unlikely.Stranger things have happened but as much as I would love this,I doubt it.

Also,Superwoman is a separate character.Lana Lang was the most recent Superwoman and before her,Lucy Lane was Superwoman pre- Flashpoint/New 52 and was a enemy of Supergirl.A evil Lois Lane from Earth 3 is also called Superwoman and is member of the Crime Syndicate.

I guess they could decide to let Kara take the Superwoman name.I mean we are about to have a brand new original character created for the T.V. as Batwoman so anything is possible.

But agree that this is the LONGEST shot.

-Maybe they are thinking of having Melissa's Supergirl cameo in "The Flash" movie, since they are trying to play with the multiverse in that film.

That would be really cool.So far,the movie insiders are reporting the only T.V. version that will most likely appear in The Flash movie is Grant Gustin(The Flash showrunner recently said in a interview around DC Fandome that they would make sure Grant could get off from the show to do a Flash movie appearance if the opportunity comes up) and Brandon Routh as his version of Superman from Superman Returns and Crisis who is a continuation of Christopher Reeve's Superman. And they will probably be cameos sort of like Ezra Millers's appearance in Crisis.

But it would be really awesome to see Melissa included too.

Or, these could all be wrong. These are all possibilities I'm just rattling off of the top of my head. Not sure who Erin is connected to that she would know anything about Supergirl. But hopefully there is some sort of surprise coming.

Fun possibilities though.

Erin has worked on a lot of shows.Besides The Flash in season 5 where she played the villain Block, she was on Dynasty last season. She was just in Lucifer this season. She's been on NCIS and The Black List. She was just on 9-1-1: Lone Star this year.So she does a lot of T.V.(and movies too) and probably has a lot of connections via her work in the industry.

As you all know Melissa was a big hit on Broadway and it's to bad many of you didn't get the chance to see Melissa strut her stuff on stage. So I have a different take on what's in store for her after season six. I think she's goes back to the bright lights of Broadway because she loves performing in front of a live audience. Whatever she decides I'll be watching her career and wish her nothing but the best.

I certainly think she will be doing more stage work.Unfortuantly, until the pandemic is under control,I don't think we'll be getting any theater shows until there is a widely available vaccine.I think stage work is in worse shape right now and is hit even harder than films and T.V. shows from COVID-19.

Black Lightning to End With Season 4; Painkiller Spinoff Still in Development

By Andy Swift / November 20 2020

The upcoming fourth season of The CW’s Black Lightning will be its last, the network announced Friday.

“When we first started the Black Lighting journey, I knew that Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful Black Women would be a unique addition to the super hero genre,” executive producer Salim Akil said in a statement. “The love that Blerds and all comic book fans around the globe have shown this series over the past three seasons proved what we imagined, Black People Want To See Themselves in all their complexities.”

He continued, “Thank you to the phenomenal cast, writers and crew without whom none of this would’ve been possible. I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve been able to do and the moments we’ve been able to create in bringing DC’s first African-American family of super heroes to life for the culture.”

“I’m very grateful to Peter Roth, Warner Bros. TV, Mark Pedowitz, The CW Network and Greg Berlanti for their partnership and support of my vision at every step of this journey,” he concluded. “While Season Four may be the end of one journey, I’m extremely excited to usher in a new chapter and continued collaboration with The CW as we tell the story of Painkiller.”

The fourth and final season of Black Lightning premieres Monday, Feb. 8 at 9/8c on The CW, while a spinoff centered around Painkiller (played by Jordan Calloway) is currently in development.

TVLine’s Broadcast Renewal Scorecard has been updated with the news of Black Lightning‘s end. Are you ready to say goodbye to the Jeffersons? Drop a comment with your thoughts on the show’s early conclusion below.

Damn,first Supergirl,now this.

I guess that's why they are developing the Painkiller spinoff to replace Black Lightning and Wonder Girl to take over for Supergirl.

We'll see what happens. But I can't help but feel the golden age of DC's Arrowverse is coming to an end. Arrow is over. Supergirl is ending after this season. Black Lightning was a relatively newer show, and that is now ending after this season. In all honesty, I see The Flash maybe going to season 9, depending on how long Grant renewed his contract for, and Legends...I feel like it's next on the chopping block. Probably not this season, because they are already losing 2 DC shows...but soon.

I think the future of the Arrowverse is going to depend on The Flash being the anchor, while we see how Superman & Lois and Batwoman fair. If they are received well, then there may be a 2nd Renaissance of sorts. But I think they are a gamble. Particularly the Batwoman recast.

One thing that Berlanti Productions is doing that I don't like is that they are taking well known superhero mantles, like Batwoman, and soon, Wonder Girl, and giving them to new, original characters that have zero history in the comics. As we all know, Ryan Wilder is an original character, that they are only now beginning to incorporate into comics to try and tie in. And the Wonder Girl character they are trying to build a show around doesn't exist in the comics. She is being introduced in January as part of a limited event.

Please don't misunderstand, I have zero complaints about having heroes of color. Black Lightning it's entire cast are fantastic, and it's sad to see it ending so soon. And I like that we've had various supporting heroes of color in the various other shows (Mr. Terrific, Kid Flash, XS, Firestorm, Vixen, etc). But the formula that worked for Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl, is that they took pre-existing legacy characters (Oliver Queen, Barry Allen, Kara Zor-El) and took those characters into live action, just giving them their own new spins. Even though they were different from the comics, they were those characters, at their cores.

Now, with Ryan Wilder and this new Wonder Girl, Yara Flor, it seems like they are creating these completely new characters, with the sole purpose of being more ethnically diverse, and giving them the monikers that have been built up and cultivated by better known characters, who have spent years, and in some cases, decades, building up those brands. Essentially, giving brand names to new characters, because they feel the brand name gives the new character a better chance of selling.

Frankly, this feels like they are taking a shortcut, and as such, feels like a recipe for short term interest, but not long term success. Shortcuts are not the way to make a character loved by the public, long term.

Take Miles Morales for example. Yes, he's Spider-Man, just like Peter Parker. But he never, EVER replaced the original, Earth 616 Peter Parker. He started in an alternate universe where Peter had died. They gave that Peter a wonderful, heartbreaking sendoff, and Miles took up the mantle to honor him. The character then spent years in this alternate universe publishing line. Then, Marvel streamlined their books, eliminated the "Ultimate" Universe, and brought Miles into the main Marvel Universe, where he got to interact with Peter Parker, build a mainstream success. They gave readers the time to get to know him, to warm up to him, to love him. Soon he was introduced in various animated shows. Then, in 2018, 7 years after he was introduced in comics, he made his feature film debut in Spider-Verse, and finally in his very own videogame, 9 years after his creation.

Now, Miles Morales is one of most beloved heroes, period, let alone heroes of color. Yes, he bares the Spider-Man name, but he was never created with the intention of replacing Peter Parker completely. And they always let his popularity grow in one type of media before introducing him in a larger, more mass market type of media. I don't think we could have jumped straight to Spider-Verse. It's the love and respect that was cultivated for that character in the comics, first, that made him a viable property.

I don't wish ill for Ryan Wilder or Yara Flor, and their respective shows. But it just really bothers me that they are trying to capitalize on a well known property to create something completely new, that is Batwoman and Wonder Girl in name only, as we currently know them.

It just...It just feels like they are trying to put the cart before the horse. And I don't think that strategy bodes well for the future of the Arrowverse.

I've been looking at reactions at various places. It seems that with the news that Black Lightning is ending, many wish the daughters,Thunder & Lightning were getting the spin-off over Painkiller. In regards to Wonder Girl,I think most didn't expect the Donna Troy version since she's a main character on DC Universe/HBO Max's Titans which is also produced by Berlanti.I think a lot are disappointed that they didn't go with the Cassie Sandsmark version. I'm a DC fan in general so I'll be checking out both shows if they go to series(remember,Green Arrow And The Canaries had a backdoor pilot in Arrow and hasn't been ordered to series).

ETA

Actually,it looks like we now know why there is a Painkiller spin-off over a Thunder & Lightning one.China Anne McClain who plays Jennifer Pierce/Lightning was leaving the show this season even if Black Lightning had continued. She is actually going to have a reduced role in season 4.

Black Lightning Star China Anne McClain Posts Emotional Video About Show Ending

By Aaron Perine - November 21, 2020

Black Lightning star China Anne McClain posted an emotional video about the show ending on Instagram. People are still wondering what is going to happen after the news yesterday. The actress dropped the bombshell during the video clip that she was going to leave Season 4 of The CW hit no matter what had transpired. There was no ill-will between her and the network or anything of the sort, but she was moved to seek another opportunity. Fans in the replies are offering their support as they grapple with the idea of a mainstream source of representation like Black Lightning going by the wayside. People have been trying to post through it for a lot of the past two days, and there will be more reflection as the weekend goes on. One thing is now certain, if Black Lightning had continued, it would have had to adjust in some major ways regardless of the latest news.

“There’s something I want to tell you, and for those who haven’t heard, I’m sorry,” she began. “This season of Black Lightning that we’re filming right now is going to be the last season of the show. I didn’t find that out until yesterday. I found out with everybody else. I didn’t know. But, what I did know and have known along with the rest of the cast since before we even started shooting this season is that I am leaving the show. And was leaving the show. This was going to be my last season, regardless of if it went on or not. For different reasons, that if we’re being honest, I do not want to go into. I just want y’all to trust me on it.”

She added, “I didn’t want to tell you until I had to. Now with this news breaking, it felt like the right time. But, I knew I was going to have to tell you at some point because I only agreed to do a certain number of episodes. I’m not in the whole season. Obviously, y’all are going to notice that, given that I’ve been in every episode in the past three seasons. There’s been a lot to happen over this quarantine, and I’m not talking about the PC side of it. I’m not talking about that. These things are real. And the way of the world now, it’s real. All of this is an illusion, this industry for what it is, and everything that people look to and praise? It’s not important.”

McClain goes on to say that this doesn’t have anything to do with The CW and specifically praises the people in charge at the network. The actress explains that she plainly enjoyed working there and the creative team she spent all those hours working with.

When news came down, series creator Salim Akil told Variety how grateful the entire team was for this kind of support.

"When we first started the Black Lighting journey, I knew that Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful Black Women would be a unique addition to the superhero genre," Akil said. "The love that Blerds and all comic book fans around the globe have shown this series over the past three seasons proved what we imagined, Black People Want To See Themselves in all their complexities."

My opinion only on a couple of things....

1. If it is true that Melissa is not interested in returning in guest spots as Supergirl......GOOD FOR HER, wave bye bye to the CW and hello to better writing on another series elsewhere, or movies, or Broadway or motherhood or all the above. Good for her.

2. Wonder Girl will NEVER be anywhere near Supergirl.... that shows annoys me to no end.

Again, all in my opinion.

Very sad to hear... but glad they can plan a final 20 episode season.

Depending how it ends, the potential for occassional guest spots remains a possibility.

I would hope that too but there is the COVID19 factor. One of the things I loved about Arrow season 8 was the fact that the whole series, each season, was honored and we got so many returning faces(I was disappointed in no Manu Bennett.Deathstroke was the one glaring absence but the character did get a nod in the series finale).

I don't know how many returning faces we can get due to the pandemic situation.I really hope Chris Wood can come back for a appearance(s) this season.I think this one could happen for obvious reasons. But due to the COVID-19 situation, how likely, logistically speaking, can former cast members like Jeremy Jordan,Mehcad Brooks,Calista Flockhart or others return for appearances this final season.

Man I'm bummed about this news but also happy that we are getting 20 episodes and we are getting a goodbye season..It's always fustrating when a show is canceled with just a couple episodes to go to shoot or they've wrapped and the series ends on a unresolved note because they didn't know the show was ending.

I thought the final season of Arrow was nailed because they knew the show was ending well in advance and had enough time to give the series a proper ending. That's the best situation for a T.V. show's ending(look at what just happened to that Dark Crystal prequel series).

So this feels bittersweet. So sad the show is ending but greatful we and the show know well in advance and we are getting a 20 episode farewell.

I know what you mean. I keep saying "it's just a tv show", but at the same time, I can't stop thinking about it. I hoped it would last long enough for me to get out of film school and somehow get on the crew.

I just hope they make this last season an amazing one. I'd also be ecstatic if Melissa is open to returning for crossovers, as Hoechlin did for 2 crossovers before his show even started.

There are varying opinions on the severity of Supergirl's political overtones. And I don't hate that they do it, though I don't necessarily agree with HOW they do it, all the time.

However, for this last season, I hope they choose to put that all aside, and focus on really giving Kara's journey the epic conclusion it deserves.

Aso someone that usually agrees with their political overtones, I totally agree with you. But, unfortunately when it comes to the CW I'm always skeptical and usually my skepticism is correct. : (
