Very sad to hear... but glad they can plan a final 20 episode season.

Depending how it ends, the potential for occassional guest spots remains a possibility.

Yes,it's confirmed.Melissa also issued a statement.

Very sad news to hear.Supergirl has become my favorite of the Arrowverse shows and I was really hoping we would get to seven seasons.I know there was speculation about the show ending for various reasons but still was hoping we would last to 7.

With that said, looking on the bright side, atleast like Arrow, they will have a wrap up season. That's always the best way for a show to end.Not being canceled at the last minute.A proper goodbye season. Also we are getting 20 episodes which is great. And maybe thinking farther ahead,Melissa could still make a occasional guest appearance on Superman & Lois or other Arrowverse shows assuming she doesn't die like Oliver did at the end of his series and I really hope they don't do that here. That worked for Arrow but doesn't feel right IMO for Supergirl,a more hopeful character.

It's all speculation, but it could be a number of things.

-Melissa could have agreed to guest spots as Supergirl on other shows.

-She may have heard something about the rumored Supergirl movie moving forward (as she didn't specify a particular version of Supergirl.

-This is the LONGEST shot...but I could see them using this as a red herring, ending "Supergirl", to rename the show "Superwoman", to fit both Melissa and Kara's matured status (again, this is a super long shot, but it was something I was thinking about).

-Maybe they are thinking of having Melissa's Supergirl cameo in "The Flash" movie, since they are trying to play with the multiverse in that film.

Or, these could all be wrong. These are all possibilities I'm just rattling off of the top of my head. Not sure who Erin is connected to that she would know anything about Supergirl. But hopefully there is some sort of surprise coming.

As you all know Melissa was a big hit on Broadway and it's to bad many of you didn't get the chance to see Melissa strut her stuff on stage. So I have a different take on what's in store for her after season six. I think she's goes back to the bright lights of Broadway because she loves performing in front of a live audience. Whatever she decides I'll be watching her career and wish her nothing but the best.

I say this in good way but this is a good thing. The quality of CW shows decline rapidly the longer they drag on (The Flash, Arrow (especially), Supernatural). This is quite evidenced in Supergirl as well.

I hope by ending here we can get the chance to see a quality season before it goes.

I would hope that too but there is the COVID19 factor. One of the things I loved about Arrow season 8 was the fact that the whole series, each season, was honored and we got so many returning faces(I was disappointed in no Manu Bennett.Deathstroke was the one glaring absence but the character did get a nod in the series finale).

I don't know how many returning faces we can get due to the pandemic situation.I really hope Chris Wood can come back for a appearance(s) this season.I think this one could happen for obvious reasons. But due to the COVID-19 situation, how likely, logistically speaking, can former cast members like Jeremy Jordan,Mehcad Brooks,Calista Flockhart or others return for appearances this final season.

Man I'm bummed about this news but also happy that we are getting 20 episodes and we are getting a goodbye season..It's always fustrating when a show is canceled with just a couple episodes to go to shoot or they've wrapped and the series ends on a unresolved note because they didn't know the show was ending.

I thought the final season of Arrow was nailed because they knew the show was ending well in advance and had enough time to give the series a proper ending. That's the best situation for a T.V. show's ending(look at what just happened to that Dark Crystal prequel series).

So this feels bittersweet. So sad the show is ending but greatful we and the show know well in advance and we are getting a 20 episode farewell.

I know what you mean. I keep saying "it's just a tv show", but at the same time, I can't stop thinking about it. I hoped it would last long enough for me to get out of film school and somehow get on the crew.

I just hope they make this last season an amazing one. I'd also be ecstatic if Melissa is open to returning for crossovers, as Hoechlin did for 2 crossovers before his show even started.

There are varying opinions on the severity of Supergirl's political overtones. And I don't hate that they do it, though I don't necessarily agree with HOW they do it, all the time.

However, for this last season, I hope they choose to put that all aside, and focus on really giving Kara's journey the epic conclusion it deserves.

Screenrant has put up a interesting article theorizing on how Supergirl could end.

Thinking about it more overnight. The word bittersweet is a perfect word for this.I'm very bummed the show is ending but happy we know well befor the start of the new season. We don't have to worry about,in the middle of the season if the show will be canceled.

It's like, okay,we know this upcoming season is the final one so lets treat this year like a celebration of the show.By announceing this now,I feel they can do that just like Arrow did for its final season.Like Smallville did.I don't watch it but I bet that is how Supernatural has treated its last season.

I was a Buffyverse watcher as it aired and in that fandom(still am)..I started watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer in the middie of season 2 when The WB network came to area.My first episodes were the Surprise/Innocence two night event(the two parter where Angel loses his soul and goes evil) where Buffy was moving to Tuesdays from Mondays. So I started watching Buffy in the beginning of 1998 and ofcourse I watched Angel which launched in the Fall of 1999.

I remember during the first half of Buffy Season 7,we didn't know if this was going to be the final season. There were rumors(it felt like it storyline wise with The First Evil as the main villian and many returning faces in its various forms) and Joss Whedon was developing a Faith spin-off series as well as a Giles BBC show(neither of which happened).but we were getting mixed messages on whether the show was actually ending or not.We kept hearing different things. It was very nerve wracking. It wasn't until like Feb. when it was finally announced the show was ending in May.I think Whedon was approaching it as a potential final season but was hedging his bets on the show's star Sarah Michelle Gellar agreeing to sign a new contract which she ultimately didn't.Which is why we were hearing different things for as long as we were.According some of the cast, they were caught off-guard by the show ending and had no heads up until it was announced in the trades.

The Angel situation was even worse because that was canceled and the show ended on a cliffhanger(some argue it isn't a cliffhanger but IMO it was) that would be resolved in a comic book a few years later.Again,I remember going through that in real time.

The cancelation news came during the weekend of a fan event with many of the writers and showrunner of Angel during season 5.It hit everyone out of nowhere.Even one of the writers had to bow out of the event because he suddenly had to re-write his episode due to the show ending.

Apparantly what happened is that Joss Whedon was tired of Angel being renewed at the last minute and went to the network demanding a early reneweal(he was already mapping out the season 6 storyline which became the basis of that comic Angel:After The Fall) and was completely blindsided when they told him,"okay, you're canceled".It came out a few months after the show ended that if Whedon had just waited like normal, the show probably would of been renewed for season 6.But because he demanded a answer early,on the spot, the show got canceled. The network head admitted a year or so later that canceling Angel was a mistake on their part. But it sounds like Whedon forced them into making a spur of the moment on the spot decision and at that specific time they just couldn't give a renewal until they had more data about where the network was at for next season and could see what their pilot orders looked like.

So the cancelation news came when they had just finished shooting episode 18,were about to shoot episode 19(which prompted that writer having to miss the fan event so he could re-write the episode over the weekend to account for the show now ending),they already had the finale(episode 22) mapped out and couldn't really change it at that point. All they really had was episodes 20 and 21 to play with.

What Whedon and the writers decided to do was just tweak episode 22 to add a extra main character's death and have Angel sign away the prophecy that says he's destined to become human(Whedon undid that in the After The Fall comic) but keep the finale as is otherwise and present the cliffhanger(and again,I consider it a cliffhanger) as a final statement of the battle never ends.

They then wanted to use episode 20 and part of 21 to try and get Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar back to resolve the Angel/Buffy/Spike triangle. But Sarah was in Japan filming The Grudge and couldn't be back to do those episodes. She would be back in time to do episode 22 and offered to do the finale but Whedon turned her down for "various" reasons. They ultimately decided to make episode 20 the "Buffy" episode to resolve the triangle with Buffy a offscreen presence(which Whedon then retconned at the start of the Buffy Season 8 comics) and use episode 21 to set up the finale.

So the point of all that Buffyverse talk is to say,I'm taking it as a gift that we the fans and they the creators know Supergirl is ending before the season starts filming so we can look at this as a final season..We don't have to worry about will it or won't it be canceled. We can just enjoy these final 20 episodes and know they will have time to create a well planned and hopfully great conclusion to the series.

As I said on the news page on this topic, it is a bittersweet end but all things must come to a natural conclusion.

The show made history by bringing this character to the small screen and we've had a very good ride for six seasons thanks to the exceptional work of the cast and crews. This is more than anyone could really have hoped for when this project was initially launched.

So, to this end, I must say: mission accomplished. Thank you for such a wonderful run!

Part of me wishes they would film 2 back to back abbreviated seasons, 10 episodes each. I think the Arrowverse shows have trouble sustaining a single story arc over 20 or more episodes. Agents of Shield and Criminal Minds took this approach. People are used to 10 episode seasons or cycles on streaming services. I think that would have been my preference. But, it is what it is... Fingers crossed it is one "helluva" final season.

Fingers crossed tighter for the return of Cat Grant.

Totally. SHIELD was fantastic at this half season formula. It's really the formula they should have been using from day 1, but especially these last few seasons.

@Romulus

I agree. I was having a discussion about Supergirl when the first season was running, and I gave it 3 seasons, max. We will have doubled that.

Also, a nice tidbit I'm saying wherever I can...Melissa Benoist wore the S longer than any other actor, whether it be Superman or Supergirl, TV or Film. And that is damn admirable.

****

I'm sure they were aware by the end of last season or shortly thereafter. They're good at keeping the cards close to their chests as a matter of course, but they knew the writing was on the wall when the ratings sank like a stone and Covid-19 hit the fan.

@comic fan

I totally agree... bittersweet is the word. I like they ripped the bandaid off and have time to construct the ending the show deserves. I still wish the 20 episodes would be split into two 10 episode arcs or mini seasons instead of one long season arc, but we got the transparency needed for closure.

10 possible things I'd like to see:

1. I hope we get Cat Grant back. I would like to see Cat take back Cat Co. Calista doesn't have to relocate to Vancouver. She can run the world-wide company remotely and have zoom sessions.

2. I'd love to see the actor who played Adam Strange on Krypton pop up. I like to think of Kypton as a possible prequel.

3. I'd like Nia Nal future bloodline explored. An interesting concept for a transgender character. It could link into item 2 above, as Krypton used a very scientific birthing practice.

4. Perhaps J'onn and Alex can solidify their partnership with the christening if the Jones and Danvers Detective Agency.

5. Kelly appears in full on Guardian gear.

6. The other 2 Brainys can return from the Big Brain while Earth Prime Brainy recuperates in the Big Brain. I like Jesse's sister and the kinda beatnick Brainy. But, ultimately I aant Earth Prime Brainy back in action.

7. Lex can get trapped in cyberspace as the result of the Toyman's immortality code.

8. Gemenae's boss is revealed... Possibly the Annointed One from the comics? Hopefully to close out this plot thread early in S6.

9. They they alter the nanotechnology in her suit to let her have a variety of differentooks to fit the situation and allow for skirt, pants and biosuit variations.

10. Kara heads to the future to join the Legion, where she is pre-destined to be...

Bonus: Kara somehow acknowledges the disappearance of Kate Kane... and the World's Finest pairing that wasn't meant to be...

Note: In reference to Buffyverse. I am still angry about how Cordelia Chase was handled in the latter seasons of Angel.

Interesting article, comic fan. Thanks for sharing. I'm with you in supporting 2 or 3 (or a combination) as the most desirable outcome. I'll be very disappointed if Supergirl dies at the end of the series. It would just seem wrong for the tone of the series, plus it would take future guest appearances off the table.

Okay,I was debating posting this.

I just finished watching today's John Campea show.During the beginning of the Q/A section, actress Erin Cummings who is a regular on Campea's podcast let something slip that maybe she wasn't suppose to but could mean something or nothing or anything..

Here's the link.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USs7Rd2Phgg&t=3086s

Erin Cummings has been in a lot of stuff. She was on Spartacus. She does a lot of guest appearances on stuff. She was on The Flash in season 5 for example and is in the newest season of Lucifer. She's going to be in the upcoming Will Smith film,King Richard

They were responding to a topic about Supergirl ending and the effects on the rest of the Arrowverse.Full warning:Campea is not a fan of the show.It was never really his cup of tea and he hates how Superman was treated on the show.He does acknowledge that Supergirl was a very important show though and has lots of fans.At the 50:56 mark,Erin makes some squealing noises and reveals that she has some," really juicy Hollywood gossip" and she can't tell Campea. She was sworn to secrecy.Campea asks if she can tell him off camera. She says that ,"she can't say anything."He asks again,if they can talk off camera. She says ,"maybe."But she ends it with, very quickly saying,"I just don't think we've seen the last of Supergirl."Make of that and speculate as you will.lol It's worth watching the exchange, again beginning at the 50.56 mark.It sure sounds like she's heard something.

My first thought was maybe Melissa has already agreed to do some guest appearances post Supergirl's season 6 series end on other Arrowverse shows.Or maybe it's something else or maybe nothing.

The reason I debated posting this is because it sounds like Erin Cummings heard some info regarding the end of the show and a possible future for Supergirl post end of series but isn't allowed to say and probably shouldn't have said even this(especially that last bit ).lol But since she did say something publically on a podcast,I figured it was fair game for speculation.

Like you, I was fortunate to see Melissa in "Beautiful." She has often said how being on Broadway was her dream and how much she loves the creative process of the theater, so I would not be surprised if, given the chance, live theater would be in her future. I saw that she was named as "Best Debut of the Decade" in a recent poll, so apparently many agreed that she was terrific. For those interested, there are many short videos of portions of her Broadway debut on YouTube. The videos were mostly shot with cell phones so the quality isn't great, but her vocals are mighty impressive.
