Welcome Back, Kara! Recap

Welcome back Supergirl fans! Here we go once more into the breach and unfortunately for the last time. No more hiatus, no more breaks, no more comic con meet ups, we have these last treasured thirteen episodes of our favorite Girl of Steel, then we have to say good-bye. A much more and deeper retrospective will come from us once we are closer to the end but for now thank you all for going on this journey with us! We are so excited to have you with us as we allow the sun to set on Supergirl! Tonight, Kara was finally fully reunited with her friends and her dad came along for the ride! Here's what stood out to us:

  1. Welcome Back Kara Party: Kara needs to stay under yellow sunlamps to rest and regain her strength. The team is planning a welcome back party for her once she is healed. From our interview with Jason Behr, these moments were Melissa's first time seeing her cast members for months! At the party we learn that Argo City is still there and Alura is still alive post Crisis. Zor-El has opted to stay on Earth for a bit to see how his daughter lives. They all head to Catco where we learn that Nia has created a cover for Kara and Catco is ranked 8th in national media coverage with The Daily Planet at number 1. Kara learns of the Phantom attacks on National City and she is tasked to do a Supergirl exclusive about the Phantom attacks. Kara apologizes to William and we learn he is dating someone in Kara's absence.
  2. Satalite in Crisis: Zor-El sees a satellite falling into Earth and alerts Kara. The father-daughter duo work together to stop the damage! We learn from saving the satellite that there is a garbage island caused by the DEO and Lex Corp. William is given the story and Andrea forces Kara to pursue the Supergirl story. Zor-El notes that the death of the Oceans is what caused Krypton's demise. He fears the same for Earth. The fires are reignited and they need Krypton data to see if there is a correlation that can help Earth.
  3. Fortress of Solitude: Kara takes Zor-El to the fortress where they can use data from Krypton to see if there is a solution for Earth. Kara is having post traumatic stress from being back in the Fortress. Kelex arrives to help. J'onn and Brainy were able to stop the fire and Alex works to find other DEO resources that might be out there. Kara and Zor-El return with their new Oscar robot. He is able to go out and clean the oceans. Before doing a proper analysis on the Garbage islands, Oscar is released and begins cleaning.
  4. Tanking Catco: With Catco continuing to decline, Andrea suits up to find more info against Lex. She finds the DEO files on J'onn and Alex instead. Oscar malfunctions and starts collecting mass. Kara suits up in her Kryptonite armor and heads to find Oscar. He's turned into a giant Garbage DEO monster set on destroying Earth.
  5. Garbage Battle: All the tech in the garbage is making Oscar invincible. Brainy is trying to get to the virus to release it manually. Kara's suit is ruptured and she takes Kryptonite damage while having a PTSD episode. Dreamer buys them time with her energy shield but Brainy is the one who brings Oscar down. Supergirl flies the garbage into space and throws it into the sun.

In the final wrap up moments, Zor-El is ready to go back to Argo City. Zor-El is scared of facing Alura. He holds Krypton's destruction as a personal failure. Back at Catco, Andrea has discovered the superfriends and she wants to cover Supergirl's allies now. Lena calls Nia to let her know that she is going back to her birth place to get to know her real mother. Kara and Alex share dinner and Kara explains how terrible it was in The Phantom Zone. Kara notes how Iris covered the City after it came back from an attack. Dreamer has a vision of Nyxly.

This was very a good return for the show. I loved it was so Kara centric which should really be a given since its HER show. Liked the heroic saves with Kara and Zor-El and the CGI was very well done here too incl the fight with the Big TrashRobot. Everything was on point. Yes the fortress stuff is just so weird that its different than the S&L one. And now that its destroyed they better address it on Supergirl too. Damn S&L has just done everything to alienate where the show came from and i really am pissed at the S&L showrunners to do this.

No promo too for next ep that air next week even i am also pissed about. Supergirl has consistently been one of CWs biggest shows and they treat it like that. Ugh makes my blood boil.

Oh and Jacksc01 it was Zor-El not Kal-El thats Superman ;-)

I see we finally got the promo for this week. I wondered why it took so long? I do think Supergirl held up better than others in Arrowverse.

I do hope either Supergirl or S&L eventually explains the Fortress discrepancies. I was starting to think they were alternate Earths. But with Diggle's recent multi-show appearance, including S&L, that apparently is not the case.

Time will tell.

Yeah they definitely need to acknowledge Kara on S&L already. It does not make a lick of sense his 2 sons does not even know they have an aunt. To him not even mentioning her is a plothole now.

And it sadly looks like CW Screwed over SG again with no promotion after ep 9. CW is not treating SG well at all.

Just back from the cabin so I'm late commenting. A very enjoyable episode on many levels, and I agree with many of the comments already posted. My favorite part was exploring Kara's trauma, especially the flashbacks and the interaction between Alex and Kara. Kelly may be the psychologist but Alex will be the key person in Kara's healing. Their couch scene near the end was so important, and Melissa was brilliant.

Nice scenes between Zor-El and Kara. I expect he will be back at some point. His response to the environment crisis is a real-life warning of the unforeseen consequences that can result from hasty reactions.

William will figure out Kara's secret identity. It will be their personal secret.

Brainy with the cake was hilarious, and Nia's reaction was a close second.

I like the potentials of the "Lena goes home" storyline. What she discovers there could play a big role later in the season.

Kara's hugs with the team were extra special, especially asking Alex for a second hug, and telling Lena how vital she was in the effort. Really well played by Katie.

Andrea may turn out to be a hero as Acrata, but she is truly a horrible boss. You give your staff the tools to do their jobs, trust them to produce, and never, ever, belittle or berate them in public. That's what one-on-ones and conference rooms are for. Lena's reprimand to Kara in season 3 was a great example of how this should be done: measured, specific, and forceful without being threatening.

About the fortress: I'm with Brierrose on this one. S and L changed it, so let the discussion be on that site. I tried out S and L early on, but it had too much teen angst for me. Maybe I will give it another shot after Supergirl wraps, I'll see. But for me, the Supergirl fortress is it.

I watched semi-live on Tuesday then again on Wednesday, I don’t usually rewatch like that, then I got busy so I’m just getting my thoughts out now.

The opening was funny, the way everyone looked at Nia to answer Brainy. Yes, Nia as his SO that’s on you.

The scene where Kara woke up remind me of when she woke up in “Falling”, Alex was by her side both times. Great Rao the acting in this scene and the finale one, it would be a crime against acting if Melissa and Chyler don’t work together on something again. No mention of phantoms especially in a Star Wars prequel, I agree.

I liked that Zor-El wanting to reunite with Alura was put out right away but it made sense to me that he would want to spend some time with Kara first. The daughter/father dynamic was nice, not once did Zor-El treat Kara like a child even though that might have been understandable since she was the last time he saw her. Yet, he was still her dad and recognized how she carries the weight of the world on her shoulders.

Zor-El had good intentions but a good scientist tests first. I thought for a split second he would sabotage the computer virus when Alex told him he had to help or step aside. I’m glad they kept just a bit of the mad scientist of Krypton in his character. At least the trash monster stayed on one piece so Kara could throw it into the sun.

Could not agree more LP Andrea is a horrible boss. Cat was smart enough to figure out Kara is Supergirl but Andrea’s not a reporter and not as smart. The whole who are the super friends thing will be used for comedy and William figuring it out and keeping it to himself.

Zor-El took just the right amount of space. I’m glad it seems Kara will continue processing her trauma. It’s true that while going through a traumatic thing we just put aside our feelings to get through it. It’s only afterwards we can sometimes take the time we need to process it.

We know the real world reasons so can we please never mention it again. It definitely doesn't need to be addressed on Supergirl. I'm more pissed at the Superman fans who use S&L to disrespect Supergirl. I'm ok with no promo for next week, I never really put much weight on them anyway. What I am really disappointed in is no new posters, some fan with graphic artist skills needs to make some if CW won't.

Comments about the discrepancies with the Fortress of Solitude are valid, so I suspect you will hear about more than one more time. Supergirl and Arrowverse fans deserve an explanation.

Am I the only one on this lovely forum that thinks it odd that Kelly was absent from last night's episode? I mean she is the local shrink and Kara sure could have used her expertise in dealing with her Shell Shock from the Phantom Zone. It's nice to talk to Alex but from what I've seen last night Kara needs professional therapy. Flashbacks are not fun unless they're happy ones.

R.I.P. Charlie Watts

i hate to say this but kelly is mostly a therapist to the superfriends in name only. these people need therapy more than anyone yet instead they choose to make her just another costumed hero instead of someone who doesn't need to become a costumed hero to contribute

I agree with much of the praise and criticism. The episode laid the groundwork for the rest of the season and did so in an entertaining way. Oscar's "final form" had me laughing--good balance between threatening and silver age silliness. :D

One overlooked takeaway from the episode is: Andrea is a horrible boss! Set an arbitrary, unrealistic goal and threaten your workforce with replacement if they don't meet it. Boooo!

Supergirl is Back! It’s like in writing a story about cleaning up a giant floating trash dump, the writers did a lot of cleaning up loose ends-not all of them but many. The opening sequence of Brainy carrying the cake box was brilliant physicality by Jesse Rath. The team’s fear he might eat the cake-considering his stress eating in ep 2-7 totally understandable. Alex also having lingering effects from Kara’s ordeal makes sense and not forgetting how Kara suffered was a giant nod to the importance of continuity.

Other improvements in continuity:
1. Alex’s one line to explain Kelly’s absence. (New job) 2. The color scheme of Zoe-El’s supersuit matching Alura’s from her Earth visit at the end of Season 3. 3. Lena who lost both her parents at a young age (different times) witnessing Supergirl with her father parallel to her watching the interaction with Alura in the season 3 finale. 4. THE VERY SIMPLE phrase “I just got off the phone with Kara” when Lena is speaking to Nia—shows Lena considering herself part of the group & means whatever goes down when Lena is away-there’s the explanation for why Kara isn’t reaching out to her for help or worrying about where she is. The phone convo also furthers the growing connection between Lena and Nia. 5. If William is as great a guy as the writers want us to accept, it only makes sense that he be interested in this baker/pediatrician who is shares an interest and is not a workplace romance. (Praying they don’t undercut Kara’s character by having her pine over him now that he is attached to someone else.) 6. Even the action scene with everyone contributing something was good. While Brainy insulting Kellex/Oscar was silly, it goes with previously established Brainy & Kellex interactions. 7. Kara having the environmental suit on so she could fling the trash monster corpse into the sun-nice they sort of remembered their established rules for her limitations. Sad for no teaser/trailer for next week.

We already knew Argos made through Crisis. Kara note that last season, which made Alura's total absence inthe first 7 episodes so glaring. Glad it was acknowledged.

I loved the opening with Brainy heading back with Kara's cake. The actors movements were fun to watch... and too funny that the supes thought he'd eat the cake before he made it back.

Glad they took the William romance off the table officially, as it was obvious writers are not going in that direction.

I liked Kara taking Zor-el to the Fortress. KELEX retrofitted and becoming Oscar (ode to Sesame Street... lol) to clean up the garbage island and becoming a garbage monster was silly but fun in a good way... although Brainy's "trash" talk with the monster was a bit much. Brainy is far more awesome in small doses. Glad KELEX was saved and returned to the Fortress. Side note: I wonder if Supergirl will address why the Fortress and other things are different on S&L? Could Mxy or Nxly have a role to play in the discrepancies?

Glad Zor-el wanted to return to Argos and reunite with Alura. But, I think Kara would have wanted to be part of that reunion.

Like the Superfriends assignment given to William... will Acrata be stalking them secretly to get scoop for CatCo.

Does Nia know who Nxly is?

Good episode.
