Tremors Recap

Ever since we got the synopsis for this episode, we've been sitting on the edge of our seats. How is Kara going to react to learning that Lena has been actively working against her? Of course, Tremors had another meaning since we know they love to double down on their episode titles. Rama Khan seems to have the powers of the Earth actively sending tremors through the Earth bringing people to their knees! How did Kara make it out of this one? Here's what stood out to us:

  1. Leviathan is Coming: Kara is doing extra training with J'onn. They both are worried that there is something bigger coming that they can't see. Lena, however, is very aware that Leviathan is coming and she lets them come. They want the medallion back and they send their old woman assassin to kill Lena but she is ready for them. She is protected via an energy barrier. She then says she'll use Supergirl to keep her safe.
  2. Leviathan Revealed: Rama Khan makes his debut. We learn that he was charged with keeping the Earth safe by an elder who has since left. At the headquarters, we discover that Gamemnae is there too. She has technology that she wants to use to make sure they stay ahead of the changing Earth. Rama dismisses this and says he'll handle it himself. He then goes to take Lena out just as she calls for Supergirl to save her!
  3. Martian Connection: J'onn can't shake the feeling that his brother is still around. He calls on his father via his psychic link and communes with him. They first forgive each other for how they both handled Ma'alefa'ak. Then J'onn asks where Ma'alefa'ak is and is surprised when M'yrnn says he's just down the street! J'onn has to make a choice to banish his brother or risk his own life to save his soul.
  4. The Fortress of Solitude: Lena has a feeling that the rumors about a Krypton-based fortress are true but Lex was never able to find it. She wants to go to the Fortress to find all the weapons that are too dangerous to be kept anywhere else. Supergirl naively offers to take Lena with her to the fortress where she is able to look through all the weapons they have. Lena takes a moment to kind of take a few jabs at Supergirl referencing the times when Lena worked hard to save poor Kara only to discover she never needed saving. Rama Khan, having searched all of the Earth, can't find them and then he realizes they must be on the one place that isn't of Earth. Lena, with unmonitored access to the supercomputer, places a device on it that seems to take it over. We then learn that Lena wants to use Myriad from season 1 to distribute her "cure for humanity".
  5. The DEO: Back at the DEO, Brainy is working through the leftover pieces of Rip Roar's armor. He starts piecing it together and somehow has an epiphany. He is able to discover the home base of Leviathan and it's right there in National City. He goes to tell Alex just as Kelly was breaking up with her. Brainy and Alex head to Leviathan headquarters where Brainy is able to see he was correct. However, Gamemnae has security measures that take Alex and Brainy to a wrong floor.
  6. Supergirl & Lena vs Rama Khan: Rama shows up to the fortress to take on Supergirl and take the medallion back from Lena. Kara is able to get the upper hand because the fortress is made from Krypton tech not Earth. Khan doesn't have his powers at full strength. Kara is able to hold him in place with her freeze breath and Lena modifies a weapon Lex made to hurt Khan. Knowing he isn't going to win in the Fortress, Khan retreats noting that "the Kryptonian won't survive this".
  7. Betrayal: After Khan leaves, Supergirl goes to find Lena. She catches her trying to steal Myriad. Lena reveals that she killed Lex. She tells how she learned Kara was Supergirl. Lena feels completely betrayed. She notes several times how Kara wormed her way into her life. Lena was never going to have a friend again but Kara changed her mind and then betrayed her. Lena tells that she killed her brother for Kara. Then Lena traps Kara in the fortress. Kara asks if Lena is going to kill her. She says no, she's not a villain, and Supergirl should never have treated her like one. Then she walks away with her Transmat portal.
  8. J'onn and Ma'alefa'ak: J'onn heads to find his brother. He is using the broken phantom zone projector to arrive in the cell with him. J'onn submits himself to Ma'alefa'ak. He allows Ma'alefa'ak to see everything inside his mind. J'onn's over whelming goodness floods into Ma'alefa'ak and he is given another point of view on life. The two brothers stand together and embrace.

Final wrap up moments. Alex goes to Kelly's place to let her know that she wants to heal Kelly. Alex was broken when Kelly found her and she was able to heal her. Alex says she wants to do the same for her. In the last moments of the episode, we see Kara stuck in the fortress alone.

Leviathan is really falling flat for me. I really hope they give us something much stronger on that front in the next episode. However, I'm loving seeing Supergirl kicking arse solo. All the scenes in the FoS were excellent, although Katie's high pitched bawling was a little weird. Other than that, I thought the confrontation between Kara and Lena was well acted.

Kara's combat skills are really improving! I liked how she took out Rama Khan in the fortress with the same move she used to beat J'onn when they were training. It'd be cool to see her spar with Alex again

Funny I saw Maggie and Alex as flat and no chemistry. Alex seems much more at ease in this relationship, as can happen quite often after we have learned what we really want, and what doesn't work for us in a relationship. That is where I see Alex now. Much less emo, much more strength in a stable, strong relationship. That is what comes with knowing who u are without someone constantly judging the relationship on what u can give them....she now has someone who is all about giving.

I totally agree with your assessment of Alex's state of mind regarding the relationship. She has clearly matured and grown more comfortable in her own skin, and it shows in her attitudes and expectations.

I disagree about the chemistry between the respective couples, but that is much more a subjective thing. :-)

I really hate that over several seasons they made Lena the 'good' Luthor and now she is basically a villain, it feels like a waste of a really good storyline for Lena. And I do not like Kelly at all, I miss Maggie.

I agree on both counts. After seeing Lena fight so hard to prove herself over the years to then for them to possibly turn her bad would be such a waste of a good character. Lena is an intriguing character, to turn her into simply another Luthor would be boring and so predictable

As for Kelly, and the Alex/Kelly relationship. It isn't working. It feels flat and imo there just isn't any chemistry there which doesn't help them sell this relationship. Feels like they're trying to force the issue too much

Ahhh! MST3K! Sometimes I really miss that show... actually there are many current series that would benefit from a good MSTing...

When I see scenes like these, I remind myself not to focus too much on what could be done better on the show and just to enjoy it while it last because we can't predict when the show will end and then, we will be nostalgic and we will probably even miss the episodes that we thought were not that great or that weren't really up to our standards.
Good point!

When the show eventually ends, however, I will never, ever miss "Not Kansas." :D

When rewatching the episode, I noticed that when Lena traps Kara, she asks Lena if she's going to kill her. Lena responds by calling her Supergirl and not Kara. I'm wondering if Lena feels more detached that way and because at first, her strong connection was with Kara and not Supergirl.

Also, I know I talked about Melissa's performance in another post, but I just wanted to add that this particular moment when Kara says "Are you going to kill me?" was so heart-wrenching because of the way Melissa said it. Her voice sounded like a wounded child. It gave me chills. We have seen Kara being vulnerable before but not like this.

So, the super secret all knowing organization is just a chick, an old guy, and a grandma hanging out at a bar under an abandoned house in the middle of National City?

Apparently so. If that's all there is (mythical alien powers and longevity aside), the second half of the season after COIE had better ramp it up twenty notches to make it remotely bearable/plausible, even with massive doses of viewers' suspension of disbelief.

And now that I think about it, why did they have to go through all the trouble of getting Rip Roar to build the gun to melt Antarctica when Rama can control the Earth and seemingly could have done it himself anytime he wanted?

Even if for some reason he couldn't actually melt the ice he could easily create an undersea earthquake to send a giant tsunami to wipe out the coast. Or even easier, just create a powerful earthquake under National City.

Of course, I don't understand why he would want to wipe out National City anyway if his base is there.
