The Dark Side of the Moon Recap

Tonight's all new episode of Supergirl happened to land on Memorial Day! We hope all of you had a good and restful day while honoring our veterans. Because there was primarily no work for most of America, this episode was unique. We got a feeling of what it will be like to watch Supergirl on Sunday's next season. For us, this was the perfect way to cap off our weekend! Of course, there was a lot more from tonight's episode than just a Sunday feeling. Here were the moments that were memorable to us:

  1. Alex and Ruby Go for a Walk: This was a pretty shocking and unforeseen attack on Alex and Ruby! While Alex has been tapping into her maternal instincts, her super secret agent training is as sharp as ever as well! She is able to catch the attack before it happens and bravely throws a bomb into a container which minimizes the damage! At this point, who or what is going after Alex and or Ruby is a mystery!
  2. Kara and Mon-El Land on Argo: Despite J'onn's ship's abilities to hide and change shape, Kara and Mon-El are hunted almost immediately on the asteroid. They look like the inhabitants of the city but clearly are not dressed the part. After a quick change to cover up their super suits, the two head into the city to find the needed sunstone. Just as we saw from the sneak peek, Alura arrives on the scene to stop the defenders and find her daughter alive and returned!
  3. Zor-El Makes the Argo Shield: With his dying breath, Zor-El created the Argonian shield to protect the city from the planet's destruction. It uses the very rock that Supergirl needs to restore Sam and defeat Reign. With the destruction of Krypton, Argo is the only refuge for the Kryptonians. With Daxam's destruction, Alura offers a place for Mon-El as well. Two entire worlds destroyed, yet sister planets that shared a sun.
  4. Alura and Kara Reconnect: It was pretty insane for us to listen to Kara tell Alura about all of the events from season 1. Astra, Non, the Kryptonian burial rights, all of it came back around full circle! Both Alura and Kara felt like both had let down the other in some way but the circumstances as large as they were, it was easy for the two to forgive and embrace.
  5. The Kryptonian Counsel: Kara, with Alura's introduction, addresses the counsel of Argo. She needs just a small piece of the rock powering their civilization. Tim Russ, who played Tuvok on Star Trek Voyager, leads the meeting and suggests the counsel deny Kara's request. But in a big toss up, Reign's mentor appears to be real and a member of the counsel. She votes to let Kara take the stone. By doing so, it must be to Reign's advantage. Perhaps removing the human side of Reign frees her to be fully powered!
  6. Alex Defeats Her Would-Be Killer: This scene was fast and over quickly but we wanted to mention it because of the awesomeness that Alex pulled off! She was able to defeat him using a Batwoman like attack! The Bat family would be proud! That, however, pulls into question the responsibilities of being a parent. Alex is concerned that her actions as a DEO agent could get her killed. As a parent, her responsibilities to her future child would demand caution. Alex needs to think what she's going to do in the future.
  7. Kara and Mon-El Return: In the last moment, Kara and Mon-El return to L-Corp just as Reign escapes from her containment! A battle begins and the rock is thrown to Lena. This of course after Lena hits the kill switch on Sam but is too late!

"The secrets will eat at her. Kara can never be a friend to someone that do not like her Supergirl persona. Reign foreshadowing Lena having pure darkness in her. All that will Come to light soon. Lena has no place on the show as only a friend."

Well, it may have been intended as foreshadowing. If so, it wasn't too subtle!
Personally, I hope that Lena remains Kara's best (non-familial) friend, as she was in the Silver Age Supergirl comics (when she was known as Lena Thorul).

But I still have trouble believing that Lena doesn't know that Kara is Supergirl by now, given all the evidence she's seen. Apparently, that is what we are being expected to believe, though. If (or when) Lena learns that Kara and Supergirl are one and the same, she may very quickly change her opinion of her Supergirl persona.

I understand Alex had to have some danger as context with her discussion with J'onn at the end about having a child.
But when Alex spots the killer, J'onn says "Wait for backup Agent Danvers" (46:56). Well, J'onn, what are you? You could fly up to the villain and apprehend him far quicker than it takes Alex to run after him across rooftops. I think he said it only to somehow justify why he didn't end up doing that (until she finally had him apprehended) but it seems highly improbable to me that he would take that long or "wait for backup". (Or he could have caught her if she failed to pull herself up with the Jedi move while hanging by her fingers).
Otherwise, fully enjoyed the episode.

Also, just before this part, J'onn (in the form of Alex) asks "Is everyone in position?" and we see a bunch of snipers moving into position. Aren't THEY also backup? How much more backup was she supposed to wait for???

Side note:
I liked Kara's monologue voiced over the scene of Alex chasing after her attacker.

Yeah I loved this part too! Supergirl was talking about how people on earth devote their lives to saving others, and at the same time we got to see shots of Alex and Lena doing literally that! I think Supergirl was thinking about them when she was giving her speech to the Council.

Great episode, even though i wish there was a bit more of kara and alura.
Odette annable, as always, killing it as sam/reign. One of the things that make reign intimidating for me is not only that odette's acting is superb, or reign's frightning set of powers, but the fact that odette is a tall woman standing at 5'8.5 tall. I kinda wish she was even taller, say 5'11 tall, because than odette would've been perfect for the role, well, more perfect than she's already now.

"Correct me if I’m wrong but in the comics Supergirl doesn’t have the same strong ties to Earth as on the show, there’s no Alex like character that’s her family."

Well, in the original Silver Age comics, Kara had no siblings (either adoptive or on Krypton). But she lived with both of her adoptive parents, and had a strong emotional connection with them. And Clark also had a part in nearly every issue, so she had her connection with him, too. At one point, Kara was torn between her biological parents and the Danvers. But the issue was resolved when Zor-El and Alura went to live in Kandor, and Kara chose to remain in Midvale with the Danvers until she graduated from high school.

This episode had its good points, but overall disappointed. Mon-el's interaction with the little boy was well done, as was Winn's connection with Ruby after initially brushing her off. The supreme council meeting was interesting, and the appearance of the world killer creator as a member of the council is an intriguing twist. But overall, the Argo City part of the story did not get the attention it deserved, or perhaps too much was left on the editing room floor for some reason. In either case, the reunion of Kara and Alura fell flat IMO. I'm hoping that the next episode will be better in exploring their relationship.

I tend to agree with many of the comments that the Alex story seemed shoe-horned in with no clear tie-in to the main story, and I think would have been better left on the shelf for Season 4, and even then stretched out over several episodes in kind of a "who is after Alex" subplot.

My disappointment is this is part of the continuing trend of a non-super Supergirl. We see very little of her in action. Kara wears the outfit but she does little more than talk. Why can't Supergirl be super?

Hope everyone is well. I was a little disappointed in this episode but overall I enjoyed it. Looks like the writers are developing Monty as a true blue superhero who is valiant, kind and understanding. Exactly what every girl looks for in a man. It's only a matter of time before he unloads his feelings to Kara.

Chris Wood has become a big part of the show and I doubt if he's going anywhere.

Maybe it’s because I don’t have a comic book background that I’m not invested in the Argo City plot. To me it’s a way for Kara to realize Earth is her home now, which goes along with the what does it mean to be human theme of the season. I get how those of you who are invested in this plot wish it would be longer. In TV it’s a tricky thing to separate the main character from everyone else for an extended period of time. Correct me if I’m wrong but in the comics Supergirl doesn’t have the same strong ties to Earth as on the show, there’s no Alex like character that’s her family. To me the Kara/Alura reunion wasn’t any more or less emotional than the J’onn/M’yrnn, reunion I found both reunions touching.

The Alex plot was needed but did go on too long. We needed that talk with J’onn but the part with the sheriff from Midvale was unnecessary. I like when connections to past episodes are made we could’ve just gone to Alex’s bike being sabotaged. It’s absolutely true that people in law enforcement and the military have families and I don’t think the conversation was meant to say Alex has to choose only that she hadn’t thought about it before.

I thought the stuff with Mon-El was good. I liked that Alura recognized him but they both showed each other respect. The scene with the little boy was nice and showed us that Kryptonians don’t have powers in Argo City or he wouldn’t have been ill.

I think there were editing issues.
