The Bodyguard Recap

Welcome back!!! It was a short hiatus but wow did we learn some big news! First of all, the 100th episode was a smashing success. You all voted it very highly and it was very well received. Next, we learned that Melissa is pregnant! This shouldn't affect production this season but next season might be a little different. No further details are known at this time. All of that in just two weeks! WOW! Now let's get to tonight's all new episode. Here's what stood out to me!

  1. Lex's Plan Progresses: Lex is using the Toyman code to reverse Leviathan's advantage. We learn that the race Leviathan's from is near the same location as Krypton. They will need a different kind of Kryptonite to penetrate their skin and infect them with the new code. To get more information on it, they will need Andrea. Lex tasks Supergirl to be her bodyguard with the leverage he has over her secret identity. Lex then goes to confront the Chairman of the Board for Obsidian and offers her Supergirl. This will allow him to investigate Leviathan.
  2. Lena's Tech Goes to Human Trials: The Luthors own a jail with some prisoners that are willing to test out Lena's tech and see if her tech will remove violent impulses. Lex suggests that Lena head to the jail to test her tech and Lena is delighted to learn that there are indeed prisoners there who are interested in the tech. J'onn and Alex head to the alien bar to check up on a lead about the alien hunting Andrea. They ask Brainy for his help and he misleads them. He has a conversation with another Brainy about what he's doing but he is told once again he must align with Lex. "It's what the math demands". Back at the prison, it turns out that Lena's tech works! All violent impulses are removed from the prisoners. Just then we go to Andrea giving her press interviews and she is again attacked by the pink energy assassin. Supergirl stops the energy but the alien escapes.
  3. The Chloriphilian: Alex and J'onn head to check out the farm they heard about from the alien bar despite Brainy's attempt to fool them. They arrive to find the green thumb of the Chloriphilian. He then zaps down from the lights and attacks J'onn and sets the farm on fire! Alex calls for Supergirl's help and she has no choice but to take Andrea to the DEO and head to help J'onn. In the meantime, Lena's tech hits a glitch. The man that could only feel fear now can feel only rage! After investigating the farm, Supergirl learns that it's actually the wife of an ex-Obsidian employee who killed himself after being home sick and becoming addicted to the lenses. The wife vows vengeance and heads to CatCo to stop the launch of the new lenses.
  4. The Battle for Andrea: Supergirl and Dreamer head to CatCo to stop the Chloriphilian. Kara takes a few hits but Dreamer is there to help. They, with J'onn and Alex's help, begin to evacuate the building. The fail safe for the launch is designed to pull power from the city if the building loses power. That means the city could explode with the new drain. Kara is able to get to the Chloriphilian and convinces her to stop her attack. Andrea uses her shadow powers to escape the DEO and heads to help Brainy. They don't get the launch deactivated in time, but Kara stopping the attack allows for the launch to go forward.

In the final wrap up moments, Kara pleads with Andrea to slow the roll out. She doesn't claiming her tech will be used to heal the trauma of the day's event. Alex is given a brand new shape-shifting weapon. It will take the shape of anything that Alex thinks of. We then jump to Lena and her new algorithm can now help those that feel wronged or have suffered injustice. The Danvers sisters share a dinner at Kara's place. William texts Kara to make sure she is ok. Kara agrees to go out with William. Brainy goes to confront Lex. It turns out Lex's powercore code couldn't be turned off without Lex's authorization. Brainy even texts Lex for help to no avail. Lex then goes to meet with the Leviathan boardwoman. He leverages a deal where he'll become the brand ambassador for Obsidian and she will introduce Lex to Leviathan.

There do9es appear to be a recurring theme since the CW move. Kara has a type. Someone that treats her like dirt and doesn't listen to her, then you have friends and family practically guilt tripping her into relationships. That's a dangerous theme to be teaching young girls

I'm glad someone else recognizes that.

It's very frustrating for a show that preaches female empowerment to reinforce the delusion that if you dig deep enough, you can find that the (admittedly hot) person that treats you poorly is really just misunderstood--or worse can change--if you just give them a chance or two. Or several...

It's dangerous for anyone to believe, really, but especially for young women.

What?? I thought i heard everything. There is no guilt tripping at all. Even in the episode she rejected him she told Alex on their couch scene that she likes him. Alex already knew Kara was in to him. She has been into William for quite some time now. You can also practically see it the way she act around him. She is a bit nervous and flustered. Also William has never once been mean to Kara. Not once. In the beginning of the season he was putting on a facade and he already told her that too. Now after he has told her everything he is simply the most sweet and perfect gentleman.

I'll take this to the forum, where the topic can be discussed more fully--and where it won't detract from episode discussion. . :-)

Like you I am a big Lena fan and hope that the show does right with her character. I was never a big crossover fan and wish they would eliminate that from future seasons. I disagree with your assessment that Kara and her love interest in the show had no chemistry. Yes, James and Kara had zero chemistry but Monty and Kara had it and it seems that William and Kara also have it. As a matter of fact Melissa and Chris are married and Melissa has a bun in the oven. I would have to call that chemistry.

I hope they do right by Lena but I won't hold my breathe. I don't trust these writers.

James never had any chemistry with anyone. It was funny at times when they got him together with Lena. Katie McGrath literally has great chemistry with anyone, but they somehow managed to find the ONE person that had zero chemistry with her lol

I've never seen any chemistry with any of the love interests they've tried to pair Kara with. Cat's son was bland as hell. James had no chemistry with anyone. The relationship ith Mon-El was flat. Even though real life couples are on screen together doesn't necessarily equate to good on screen chemistry, and William is like Mr Blandsome. Would it be so hard for the writers to give him a personality? There do9es appear to be a recurring theme since the CW move. Kara has a type. After my disappointment with how Episode 13 (100) turned out I was happy that this episode (14) was a more enjoyable experience for me especially Kara/Supergirl plus Alex and J'onn.

A line that resonated with me was Andrea saying to Supergirl "then it's good, saving people is what you do best" :-) . Supergirl saves are my everything with this show and there were 4 to enjoy on this occasion. Supergirl saved Andrea (twice), William plus Alex and J'onn. My favourite was Supergirl using her Freeze Breath to put out the fire. This was also the 2nd time Kara has saved her Catco boss from a falling elevator as folk may recall she saved Cat the same way in the Season 1 episode 'Livewire', nice one Supergirl.

I continue to enjoy Kara and William (so cute together) and like that they're going out on a date. The scenes I actually enjoyed the most with them were the ones where Kara (as Supergirl) and William were just having a chat at the Platinum launch place . I liked how Melissa played it when Supergirl didn't quite know how to talk to William when he first introduced himself to her.

It was really neat to get some good scenes with just Alex and J'onn, took me back to Season 1 and the many excellent scenes they shared together then.

I also enjoyed watching a nice Martian Manhunter save in the episode when he saved approx. 10 people by flying the elevator up,up and away. Thumbs up to MM :-) .

So there were quite a few things I got a lot of enjoyment from, one of my Top 5 episodes from Season 5 thus far.

The show has been a mess since the crossover screwed everything up. They need to get everything back to normal. Get the DEO back to the way it was. Get Alex and J'onn back at the DEO where they belong. Get Lena back at L Corp as the CEO. Fix the multiverse and get them back on the right Earths again. This new direction has been awful, and then there is the obsession with giving Kara a love interest. Did they not learn anything from their previous attempts? Do they deliberately try to scour for guys that have gthe least amount of on screen chemisrty for her to get together with or something? Every single love interest has has zero or very little chemistry to make it work. Maybe it's time they forgot about it and let her be single. You don't need to be in a relationship to feel complete.

Then There's Lena. I really thought after the last episode Lena would have got her wakeup call but it seems I was wrong. They are ruining the character and the development she went through during season 2 and 3. I'm on the verge of quitting the show if it doesn't get fixed

It seems I'm in the minority, but I liked this very much. It had a lot of action, 3 dramatic saves by Supergirl, a sister talk, and scenes of super-speed and flying (I like the dramatic takeoffs they've been doing lately). I'm glad that Kara will go on a date with William, and am wondering when she will share her secret. That team has great potential for both humor and journalistic sleuthing.

A couple of fun scenes were SG's reaction to Andrea's selfie and Kara's pout when Alex denied her the dumplings. Great facial humor by Melissa.

On the subject of Dreamer's save during the fight at Catco, Amy had robbed J'onn of his powers earlier, and then did the same to Supergirl when she touched her. That is all the context I need to justify Dreamer's intervention. I understand that some don't like that plot device (and it is true it has been used too often), but in this case I had no issue with it. It set up the scene where Supergirl shows her bravery by facing Amy even without her powers and talks her down. The show has done this kind of scene before, notably in "Human for a Day", and it is very effective.

Lena is at a tipping point. I think Lex is overplaying his hand by appealing to her issues with Supergirl. This will backfire and be a factor when Lena reconnects with Supergirl, turns on Lex, and starts toward her redemption. However for being a smart person she is astonishingly gullible!

Brainy is similarly torn. I find myself thinking that the other Brainiacs cannot be trusted and that this whole "must work with Lex at all costs" is an evil ruse. He seems to be catching on faster than Lena, though.

It was good to see Steve the prisoner again. Good job by the actor! The dragon at the start was pretty cool, too.

Enjoyed it very much. It was a good fun and very entertaining episode. Sparks flying between Kara and William was very cute to see. The comedy was very good between Andrea and Supergirl. I really liked the elevator save from Supergirl and i really liked her saving J’onn and Alex too. While first putting Andrea in the hands of DEO. She just wants to do everything in her power to save everyone. That is what makes her Supergirl. Lena falling further into darkness testing on prisoners. Wanna really watch her embrace her dark side though.

Overall I enjoyed this episode. Very happy to see Jonn give Alex a Martian Gun which should provide some fun moments later on when she uses it on the bad guys. I was disappointed when Supergirl didn't beat the crap out of Amy and opted to talk her down instead. And what happened to Amy? Did they lock her up or just issued her a summons for disturbing the peace. I want action and destruction to these malcontents. Good chemistry between William and Kara, not so much with Kelly and Alex.
I'm hoping that Andrea and Lex are dead by season's end.
