Welcome home Supergirl fans! It is time for us to go on one last journey with The Girl of Steel! We are so happy you all are with us for this final season of what got us started in this industry in the first place! Some minor house cleaning items to open up with, it is Spring after all. It is important to note again, Covid-19 has brought a ton of television production disruption. Tonight's episode features many scenes filmed before the shut down. Two, the show knew Melissa was pregnant, and they wanted to respect that. While we all want The Girl of Steel up front and center every episode, please note some of these choices were made for Melissa's benefit. I think that is something we can all get behind, right?
Interesting side note, after watching tonight's episode, we encourage you to watch this sizzle reel from The CW noting their "Spring" shows. If you've watched Stargirl or Superman and Lois, you'll note the shows look very visually different than other Arrowverse shows. We are interested in your opinions here, does the short Supergirl clip look like it is benefiting from the new cinematic look or are we just reading too much into this?
But enough with the house cleaning, its time to go up up and away on an all new episode of Supergirl, here's what stood out to us:
- Picking Up Where We Left Off: We jump right back into where we left off nearly a year ago. Nia arrives to save Brainy. Supergirl, Martian Manhunter, Alex, and Miss Martian all arive to take on Gamenmae. Once Alex heals Brainy, he uses the anti-life equation to bring down Gamenmae. Supergirl yells for everyone to get out while the Leviathan ship is destroyed.
- Lex Luthor, God: Lex, under the help from his mom, takes on all the energy that Leviathan had. He now has their powers. Lex reveals that all those that were in VR are not programmed to love Lex no matter what he does. Those that weren't will be killed via his satellite network. Lex's mom demands that he not kill Lena, where he aptly says "why not, she killed me first". That said, Lex agrees. Team Supergirl meets to discover how to bring down SuperLex, there is a rock like Kryptonite but works against Leviathan powers. They need to use Myriad to undo what Lex did. Supergirl offer's to give herself up to distract Lex long enough for the Martians to bring the satellites down. Supergirl get's Lex to agree and meets her at the Fortress.
- Andrea the Failure: Obsidian will be bankrupt as soon as the market opens the next day. Andrea's father blames her for everything and has disowned her. Kelley tries to reassure her. Meanwhile Alex counsels J'onn on the major joining he and M'gann are about to do. They will know everything about each other and being this open and vulnerable is scary for J'onn. Brainy and Dreamer work to try and salvage their relationship now that Brainy can tell Nia what he was doing. Andrea uses her powers to force her father to buy her shares out giving her power over the still profitable Cat Co.
- Supergirl's Death: Supergirl knows that she might die from her fight with Lex. She takes time to record a message on a crystal for those seeking her guidance in the future. Lex arrives to kill Supergirl and while there, the team is able to attack the satellite network and get the bottle of rock energy to de-power Lex. After some back and forth, Lex takes it to the final blow and blasts Supergirl with Kryptonite until she is dead ... but when the population is safe, Lena's protocol is activated in the fortress and Supergirl is blasted with yellow sun radiation and wrapped in her Kryptonite safe suit. She is revived.
- To Lex Goes The Spoils: Lex celebrates his victory singing "We are the Champions" by Queen in the Fortress. Supergirl, Martian Manhunter, Dreamer, Alex, Miss Martian all arrive to take Lex out and de-power him. Lex gets the better of them all and heads to grab a phantom zone projector. Supergirl kicks the de=powering crystal over to Alex who is able to blast Lex and remove his powers but not before sending Supergirl to the Phantom Zone. Without knowing where in the Phantom Zone Supergirl is, there is no way to return her. Lex uses his knowledge that Kara Danvers is Supergirl to hold off conviction but Lena knocks him out. Lena encourages Alex to tell Kelley who her sister is.
In the final wrap up moments, Cat Co is shielded from Obsidian's fallout. She devotes her paper to real reporting, something that William has made possible with his exposé on Lex with Miss Tessmacher's testimony. Nia is able to cover for Kara being gone by claiming Cat Grant called her away on a story. Lena arrives in jail to wipe the minds of her mother and brother so they don't know Supergirl's identity. J'onn gives Alex a code name, Sentinel! The wall of Justice League members in Supergirl's hide out adds Alex to the board. They are working on a way to mount a rescue mission to get Supergirl back from the Phantom Zone. We are left with seeing Supergirl in the Phantom Zone unconscious and being surrounded by Phantoms! Until next week!

I was originally hoping they'd lean more to the most recent Leviathan comic arc for a bit of synergy. Both could have unfolding together. Alas, that was not the plan.
I found the pace of this episode to be almost in 'afterburner' through most of it, and my guess is that it's because of how they ended Season Five.
It's common knowledge that Episode 5.19 and some parts of 5.20 were combined together to make the "To Be Continued" cliff-hanger that finished last season, but that left the events in what should have been the last two episodes (the 21st and 22nd) unused. I suspect that the show-runners took much of what was intended to be in both of those episodes - which would have brought Season Five to a proper conclusion - and combined parts of them and rewrote them to make the premier episode that we saw for this season, and this could explain why it was so packed with events.
Either way, it was action-packed to say the least, and although no one expects them to maintain this pace through all of this coming season, it was a great way to kick off what will be the finale season of our favourite show.
And as for the comments about Cat Grant; no one on the super-team knows that Cat knows about Kara being Supergirl, but if Cat were asked by anyone else about supposedly working on a story with Kara, I suspect that Cat would clue in to something being amiss and cover for Kara without anyone on the team asking her to do that.
I'm really looking forward to the rest of this year, before all that we have left to look back on is just the memories of a very heartfelt hero wonderfully brought to life by Melissa's stellar performances over the past six years.
I think a adaptation of the current verison could of worked well on Supergirl.Better than what they ended up doing.
I believe the writers would do as good a job with "her" as they did with Rama Kahn and Gamemnae.
You see the reason for my ambivalence...
I expected more from Rama Khan, the Wrath of RK was a particularly disappointing episode for me... he did a little better in a subsequent episode, but the Ancients (as leaders of Leviathan in this iteration) were poised to be the greatest threat to Supergirl, only to be dispatched with relative ease. I am still surprised they defeated Gamemnae so quickly in the premiere and Brainy recovered equally fast from bottling up the others at the end if last season. I would be fine if "her" had a one-off to tie up loose ends.
I would not be terribly disappointed if that is the case. They've been around a long time. Whoever "her" is, she can bide her time.
I wondered the same thing... I suspect they are moving on from it and we may never know who "her" was...
Other highlights: Lillian defending Lena from Lex, great scenes between Brainy and Nia, and also between M'gann and J'onn. Kudos also to Jon Cryer, who has built Lex's mania layer by layer over the past seasons to its present full-blown state.
It was so great to see Melissa back! I have no words to describe how brilliant an actor she is, and I totally agree with several comments made here about her remarkable ability to convey feelings through expression, body language, or a simple gesture. It is a talent that I noticed right away when I first saw her act back in season 1, and she has only gotten better. It will be fascinating to see how she portrays SG's plight in the Phantom Zone; I am really looking forward to watching that!
William was clearly disappointed that Kara had left without telling him, and I believe he may set out to find her, which could get him in real trouble. I also looking forward to the scene when Alex tells Kelly that Kara is Supergirl.
Last thing: Now that Leviathan is gone, whatever happened to the mysterious "Her" who was referenced last season? Any ideas? Maybe "Her" was Gammemae's Gorgon-like techno alter ego?
Maybe in order to bring Supergirl back from the Phantom Zone someone may have to go in and get her. Maybe they can jury rig the projector to make that happen. Maybe bring Monty back from the future or Maybe have Alex do it. Or Maybe not.
