Supergirl Season 5 Covid Schedule Change

Every television show in the world has had some level of change due to the coronavirus. That looks like it will hit Supergirl in an unexpected way. Many of you might know through various interviews that Nicole Maines has done recently, that much of the season 5 finale for Supergirl had been filmed. However, not all the shots were finished. The production team pivoted, and found a way to use the footage they had to make the finale. What wasn't clear was would that change the number of episodes we get. Today, The CW released a new return date for Supergirl which is now May 3rd. The finale is still confirmed for May 17th. Doing the math, it looks like Supergirl's 5th season is now just 19 episodes long (we have reached out to official sources to confirm this but haven't heard back yet, will update when confirmed).

We can still look forward to Melissa Benoist's directorial debut, now in May, and then just two more episodes and that will put a wrap on season 5. As fans of the show, we know this isn't ideal, but we can also empathize with how unorthodox this situation is and we certainly wouldn't want the cast or crew to put themselves at risk for just one more episode. Another unforeseen casualty of coronovirus, but one we can live with.

There has been some unofficial talk/rumors that Katie did not extend her contract. I have not heard anything official on that front at all, it is just rumors since apparently her contract ends with this season. Just something to add to the already uncertain storylines of this season and next....lol

I have wondered if Lena's story this season would lead to a natural endpoint of her time on the show.I suppose we'll find out after episode 19 airs.Maybe in a post episode/season interview.I hate to lose Katie and the Lena character but I could see for example...

A)Lena getting a heroic death

or

B)Lena leaving National City in some fashion.

I think something along the lines of B) is more likely at this point since it keeps the door open for guest appearances.

I have always hoped for a Super Woman storyline for Lena, and it would go along the lines of the New 52 Supergirl version. It doesn't end well for Super Woman, but it was a great, very dramatic arc.

It would be a shame if Katie doesn't extend her contract and I feel most of us would agree. She's a gem of an actress. But you got those damn rumors.

I was taken aback by the new issue of TV Guide magazine that came out this week. It has "Season Finale" listed for the May 3rd episode of Supergirl. I flipped to week 2 ( May 10th) and Supergirl is listed as "N" (new)... although, no episode description. So an apparent typo for May 3rd as the season finale. LOL!

In somewhat related news Grant said Flash is gonna have 19 episodes. https://tvline.com/2020/04/20/flash-grant-gustin-preview-season-6-barry-learns-mirror-iris/?fbclid=IwAR1mhIBB7gMsEl-AMRzb8iZJ9NdpU2gk4SApXNwZpi5gnEgXYxuLxorqzg8

I wonder if it will be a little like Arrow Season 7 where the season 6 big bad,Ricardo Diaz continued into the first half of season 7 and the new big bad,The Ninth Circle took over the second half of the season.

I think the other part of the mystery equation is will Supergirl get a full or partial Season 6. I suspect any dangling threads could be resolved in the S6 premiere. I think Lex will be a continuing part of Arrowverse but Leviathan is likely done.

Jon Cryer's comments that the show's writer are writing new material around what was filmed for the finale before production shut down was a bit perplexing. Can't wait to see how this all plays out.

I saw him hint that the circumstances of Lex's resolution were being changed. They may be repurposing existing footage to tell a somewhat different narrative with creative editing. Depending on the footage available and skill of writers and editors, the approach can work well.

Supergirl is undoubtedly in a better spot for this than the Flash.

I tend to agree with this assessment. Under these hugely unusual circumstances this may be the best result we can realistically hope for. If the Lex/Leviathan story has to be continued into next season, so be it, provided that it be drawn to a speedy conclusion and a new villain story begun. I also hope that Lena's pity party will end either now or very early in season 6.

Yes... I too think Supergirl is in a better position than Flash and Batwoman to deliver a satisfying season finale. I am very optimistic the SG Team will make the most of their available resources.
