Supergirl Cast Fights Mental Illness

Today is the start of Mental Health Awareness week which runs from October 1st to the 7th. Some of you have seen Chris Wood and Melissa Benoist do a live Instagram session with fans to share their experiences with mental illness. Joining Melissa and Chris is Jeremy Jordan, Mehcad Brooks and many others standing in solidarity - wearing shirts and posting the hashtag #IDontMind. Here is the mission statement as said on idontmind.com:

Our mission to defeat the stigma surrounding mental illness starts with a simple phrase: IDONTMIND. By saying IDONTMIND, you can help break down the barrier of stigma and bring hope to those who are struggling and afraid to speak up. Together, we can generate positive messaging and find creative ways of reaching those who need encouragement.

The site also provides information on warning signs, treatment options, and many other resources for those who are suffering or know someone who is. The site also has a shop where you can purchase your own t-shirt or hat. All proceeds from the IDONTMIND campaign will go to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI.

If you or someone in your life is suffering from mental illness, please visit www.idontmind.com or www.nami.org to find resourses and support. Mental health is a vital and often overlooked facet of society and together, we can stand against stigmas surrounding it.

Quoting Argo:
It takes great courage and exposing one’s intimate secrets is truly “putting yourself out there.” Melissa took a gigantic step in showing that people in the public eye can suffer from these illnesses and yet succeed. It is important for all of us to recognize that many productive members of our society suffer in quiet dignity.

Well said Argo - and unfortunately some of those who suffer in quiet dignity end up going without help that they truly need which doesn't do anyone any good. So I'm in total agreement with Melissa, Chris and Jeremy. I wouldn't want any tombstone to read "He/she committed suicide due to depression but she/he did it with quiet dignity." I'd rather see them get help.

Great cause there is a big problem in the United States with not only stigmatizing mental illness but a lack of funding makes it even harder to get help. Shirt purchased!

It's a very worthy cause. If you can, support it.

I think that what the SuperGirl crew is doing is beautiful. As a person who suffers from depression (which I don't mind saying) it is wonderful when people who are in the limelight come out and use their mass venue as a way to spread the word that it does exist and needs to be addressed in a positive way.

There's also a picture of "J'onn" out there with the shirt.

David also posted a photo of himself wearing the T-shirt on Instagram. It's a great cause and I hope it inspires those suffering to speak up and seek help.

So many people suffer in silence or do not have the support system that they need. It is time that awareness come to the forefront and having young people such as Melissa and Chris speak out publicly is truly important and inspiring. Let's continue to spread the word!!

I think it was very brave of her to come out and admit she had a problem. Hopefully it will inspire others to seek help.
