This is the one thousand, forty-third article I've written about Supergirl the show and while 1,043 isn't a number particularly significant of a season kick off, it is a great feeling to be back! Tonight, Supergirl returned to The CW and picked up right where it left off 140 days ago! As we know, Kara was left in a dark place after saving the world. She sacrificed her happiness with Mon-El to save the adoptive planet she calls home. Making a sacrifice of that magnitude rolled up into Kara abandoning her human persona. While Kara's darkness after Mon-El was a major element to the episode, much happened with Cat Grant, Lena, and the introduction of Morgan Edge and Samantha Arias! Here are the elements that stood out to us:
- Daydream Sequence: Season 3 starts off with no words, only music and a beautiful daydream sequence with Kara and Mon-El and a surprise visit by Alura (Erica Durance). The shots were beautiful and you have to wonder which planet they were on because of the ringed planet behind them. Maybe a moon? Maybe it doesn't matter when you are dreaming!
- Super-Hearing: One of the elements we've heard from you guys often is that you wanted to see more of what Kara can do and her saving the day in everyday situations. While it wasn't exactly an everyday situation, hearing what Kara hears and how she fine tunes it was a pretty awesome experience.
- Kara is Hurting: Not exactly in a specific scene but you can tell in all her interactions, Kara is not Kara. She is angry, looking for a fight, and ready to throw everything away.
- CatCo is Nearly Sold to Morgan Edge: TWIST! Cat Grant has to put her shares in a blind trust and her board members are entertaining the offer to sell to Morgan Edge? WOW, that is like when Lex Luthor bought the Daily Planet! A very interesting twist for our journalistic crime fighters!
- James Tries to Bring Kara Back: While it might not have been the best idea to use the signal watch to get Kara's attention, James did a great job trying to reach Kara in his office. Talking about how Guardian means a lot to him but what James Olsen does to show balance, something Kara is lacking. With the way she's acting, I can't help but feel like a red lantern ring would be more possible than previously thought.
- Alex and Kara Scene: Alex might be the only person who can speak to Kara like she did in this scene. Kara needs to hear the hard truth and Alex was the only one to say it. That said, Kara let loose on Alex, said some borderline things. It was sad watching Kara Danvers figuratively die in front of our eyes.
- J'onn Moments: There were several moments where we felt that J'onn was making some incredibly sweet and well thought out points. He was doing some great Space Dad stuff! There were enough scenes that we wanted to note them all here rather than each one. So happy to see J'onn in that role.
- Samantha Saves Ruby: There wasn't much with Samantha and Ruby at this point in the episode but that scene where she saves her daughter was incredible! Just that scene alone has me thinking that we are all going to fall in love with Samantha and her slip into Reign is going to be epic, and heartbreaking!
- Supergirl Lifts a Submarine Out of the Water: That was an incredible scene to see. Really showed Kara's strength yet again. She is physically powerful and emotionally strong in character. Even hurting, that brief moment where she heard Mon-El's voice was all she needed. Beautifully done.
Final wrap up moments. Lena outbids Morgan Edge to protect Cat Co! Slick move! Kara pulls a better one-liner on Morgan Edge giving him all of her attention! Alex asks J'onn to walk her down the aisle. Enough said, tears! We loved it! And finally, Wake up! Setting a very interesting mystery for the season, we know episode seven will include an episode called, "Wake up" which will answer many questions!

Oh heck yeah....all of the "kick arse" moments get a rewind.
I even got a little more enjoyment out of it with my 2nd viewing. 3rd viewing for me this weekend.
One might propose that they continued to fly -- well, whatever was propelling them in the air -- while under water. After all, the 1950s Kryptonians could also fly to the core of the sun, and the stuff there is far denser than liquid water.
I don't know about you, but I have yet to be able to watch it in less time than an hour and a half. Have watched it three times now, and find my self rewinding good parts a few times before moving on. Bah ha ha I didn't really do that at ALL last season. This year's looking up for me
SCIENCE!
Not sure Ill be watching many more
The Silver Age Supergirl and Superman apparently didn't need to breathe and could fly in space and swim underwater endlessly. But if you remember, Toyman told the TV version of Supergirl that "even you need oxygen" (in the "Childish Things" episode). Apparently, the TV Kara can hold her breath much longer than a human, but eventually her oxygen supply will run out.. (or at least, that's how I interpret it).
"But also after a battle with Bloodsport, the Silver Age Kara came to the surface as she cared for the soldier who was knocked out in the fight.."
Yes, that was what I was waiting for - to see the Silver Age Kara reappear. I was thinking "now *this* is the Supergirl I remember!"
Yes, her true nature. Exactly what the Silver Age Supergirl would have done!
