Reign's Backstory & Alternate Supergirl Suit

If you've been following our spoilers page and or been pretty close to staying on top of the Supergirl news, this first revelation won't be too surprising to you. In talking to Entertainment Weekly, Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg noted how we will get to meet Reign and how this villain will be unlike any villain done in the Arrowverse before. Kreisberg says:

When we meet Reign, she’s just a woman. Her name is Samantha and she’s a single mom, and she has no idea that she is Reign; she has no idea that she was the baby in the pod at the end of last season, so the journey that she takes this season is watching her realize her heritage and see how it manifests.

Andrew Kreisberg went on to discuss how the choice of bringing in Reign and telling her story from a different point of view is affecting choices across the entire Arrowverse:

The thing that everybody is struggling with on Supergirl this season is 'What does it mean to be human?' I’m not only competing with myself on Supergirl, but I’m competing with myself on all the other shows that I’ve done, and by that I mean I don’t want to repeat what I’ve done on Supergirl, nor do I want to repeat what I’ve done on Arrow and Flash. Usually on these shows you either meet the big bad at the end of episode 1 or you meet them at episode 7 or 9, and you realize that they’ve been pulling the strings the whole time, and were out there working with their multi-year plan to take down the heroes or destroy the city. When we were figuring out Reign, one thing we’ve never really seen on any of these shows is we’ve never seen the big bad become the big bad.

Additionally and possibly more exciting is this little tid-bit that came from a spoiler room also at Entertainment Weekly. When we were at Comic Con this year we asked Melissa if she was going to get a new costume and she told us that Andrew Kreisberg approached her about it but she loves her current one so much, its just too classic to let go. That said, the show looks like they found a way to get Melissa into a new suit, at least for a little bit of the time, Melissa says:

There is a different suit that I will be wearing at some point this season, but I won’t tell you when or to what capacity, It’s cool, though.

A different suit could mean a lot of things. For those of you who are thinking that Supergirl's third season is to embrace the New 52 storylines wholeheartedly as well as noticed the darker logo from the newest promo; you might be lead to believe that a Red Lantern Ring could be in Kara's future.  But that is just speculation for speculations sake.

Supergirl returns to The CW on October 9th at 8:00pm! Put on your speculation hats and let us know what you think in the comments below and in the forum! Also keep us your advertisement free source for Supergirl news and visit the support page!

How about a different theory, maybe a black suit when Kara splits in two a good Supergirl and a evil Supergirl. Just like in the new 52 when Lex exposed her to black Kryptonite.

That's a good idea. I'd be down with that.

BTW, that was from the 2005-2011 run, not New 52. Or, did they do it again in New 52? I don't quite remember.

As far as this whole Red Lantern business, am I the only one would actually didn't like that part of the comics? I mean, the idea of Supergirl becoming a Red Lantern (or any Lantern) is interesting, but the execution of that in the comics I felt was awful, except for the very end when she takes the ring off. If they do introduce this in the show I pray they do a better job of it.

Your not the only one

knightsabre7 no you're not the only one. That was about were I stopped reading the comic in new 52, for the reasons you mentioned. IF it happens I hope they can pull it off but I'm having trouble seeing how it could be made well.

As for her being in a New 52 suit, I doubt it.

Looking forward to the right between Kara and Reign and I hope Kara's suit is something like the current one from Rebirth.

Your not the only one. I'd referenced hopping for a Red Lantern Supergirl a few times in the past. I think as far back as "Red Faced" or "Falling". Many disagreed at the time and probably still do. I'm actually surprised to see so many coming around to the same train of thought. The comics may not have been perfect but they were not that bad either.

I think tweaks to the suit design are fine if they're used to convey Kara's increased status as a more mature superhero (e.g. gold trim and such), or to convey a major change in the mood/tone/reality of the episode/season (e.g. cape closing around the neck in bleak future environment).

I feel the same, I love the current suit that SuperGirl wears and I think it is perfect. I don't mind a new suit for a plot that last for 1-2 episodes but other than that I prefer the current suit.

Also, because I know nothing about the red latern ring, I looked it up on the internet and found out it is fueled by anger and rage. Also it said that "only a Blue Lantern can remove a Red Ring from its owner safely. As of yet, only two Red Lanterns have managed to remove their Rings unassisted by a Blue Lantern and surviving: Guy Gardner and Kara Zor-El" . Sooooo, my guess is that the change of outfit has something to definitely do with the ring and once the ring comes off, she goes back to the SuperGirl outfit we know and love. This is so cool and new to me. I am really excited. Of course this is all just speculation - again, October can't come soon enough.

I'm drooling at the thought of this kind of character depth/development for Kara. The red k episode really needs this kind of followup, because we saw that she has all this rage inside. My hope is that they use recent events as a vehicle for that and not as the explanation for the ring, if that makes sense.

Imagine Alex trying to convince Kara to take the ring off

This is just fueling my hopes that they go the red lantern route.
