There are many reveals still left to be explored this season of Supergirl but one major reveal happened tonight! The identity of Pestilence was discovered and she is bringing quite a wallop! Those of you that are more active members of our site might have already known or guessed who Pestilence was but nonetheless, the irony of her identity was not lost on us. Furthermore, Alex was faced with a very tough realization and Winn/James and Lena/Sam stole the show. What specifically stood out to us? Just check out our recap below:
- Saturn Girl vs Supergirl: No killing Saturn Girl! While we can understand that Saturn Girl wants to do something that guarantees a safe outcome for the millions of lives in the 31st century, killing is a non-starter for Supergirl. It's kind of hero 101 and we think this will come back again and again for the heroes.
- Reign and Sam Talk: This was very fascinating to us. We've been seeing the dark forest that Sam goes to when Reign is in control but we just felt it was like a metaphor for a dark place in her mind. That said, if what Lena says is correct, then she is actually going to a new dimension! That reminds us of the pocket dimension that Flash's "Thinker" operates out of.
- The Needs of the Many ... : It's a common question that is examined in comics and the larger nerd culture. Star Trek gave Spock the famous line, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one". However, when it comes to Superman and Supergirl, the right thing is ALWAYS upheld. Logically, like Spock, Imra's position is very understandable, however, if the Girl of Steel has taught us anything, it's that there is always a better way.
- James and Winn: We remember asking Ali Adler in season 1 what it was like to show positive female relationships outside of romantic love. She was a little taken-a-back but loved the question. You can see it in our interview section on the videos page. We followed up with if they were going to explore positive male relationships as well. After seeing the scene between Winn and James, we have no doubt that Supergirl the show can show amazing relationships of any type.
- Pestilence Joins Purity: Just when things started to go one way, Purity shows up and saves her sister from Saturn Girl, Supergirl and Mon-El. Now with Reign as the last piece of the trinity, it's only a matter of time until the three get together and are powered up by each other. Very difficult times are ahead for team Supergirl.
- Trinity: Well that didn't take long! In a matter of moments after the battle with Pestilence and Purity, the three were united and Supergirl and team were held off via some new powers of the combined Worldkillers! If that wasn't enough, you had Reign throw Supergirl's phrase back in her face with "El May Arah"! EPIC!
All in all, this episode was amazing and really teed up some big things coming soon. The team knows Sam is Reign, the trinity have been found and Lena's work behind Supergirl's back might have some consequences for Kara and Lena!

I see your point. When I mentioned Kara, I meant Supergirl in this case. Supergirl has been a proven friend of aliens and has been shown to give people second chances's. Whether she has killed in battle or not, there has been nothing to suggest she would treat people horribly. Quite the opposite in fact.
And Lena knows Alex and knows Kara is her sister. She could have trusted Kara to lead Alex towards the right path even if she is not sure about Alex herself. And... I was also surprised that Lena didn't feel concerned for Kara when she found out that Alex was sick. Basically, in my opinion, that James check in was not needed at all. It doesn't do justice to any of the characters and didn't serve any purpose.
I am not a Lena hater by the way (and I think Katie Mcgrath has been doing a very good job these past few episodes). But, I think instead of the Morgan Edge episodes, they could have done a better job of building Lena up as the grey character everyone assumes she is... so that if she remains SG's friend or not would have been actually nail-biting.
We finally have the Reign/Sam reveal, we have the 3rd world killer, we have full involvement of the Legion, and we have Lena being brought into the fold.
The episodes are getting better and better each week, I'm excited to see where next week's episode takes us.
Agreed on all fronts.
Those Lena and Sam scenes are always so emotionally charged, they're great.
Kara and Imra coming to an understanding via heartfelt connection was a joy to see.
Secrets. Those are very tricky when it comes to superhero shows. There's always two sides to the story when it comes to secrets and I can see why certain characters keep certain secrets.
To be fair, Lena doesn't know that Supergirl is Kara. So yes, Kara (and Alex) wouldn't treat Sam like that but that wasn't Lena's thinking. She equates both Alex and Supergirl as members of a government organization that specializes in handling alien threats, I can understand her hesitation and reluctance to call them.
Nobody is talking about how a lot of us feared Imra's worst fear would be losing Mon El to Kara and instead it turned out to be losing her sister all over again? I was so happy to see that.
I agree with Brierrose that there were some editing issues with this episode.
Considering that her keeping the secret directly led to the other two worldkillers breaking Sam away, Kara definitely has the moral highground. And, not just that, Lena said that she was close to breakthrough on pestilence while she was not (did she even know what she was talking about then). And, no... Kara or Alex either would have never used Sam as a lab rat. Kara's behaviour so far is against it. And what Lena was doing with her was also treating her as lab rat. Painfully so.
I liked the talk between Winn and James. The focus on James as a friend these last few episodes has really helped increase my appreciation for his character. It was nice seeing Alex doing her science thang and I also enjoyed Winn playing the gullible Brainy with the Freddy Kruger description.
Usually, I take Kara's side on how she handles things but, I agreed completely with Imra and Brainy's approach to how to deal with Pestilence. They're from the future and they know with 100% certainty that Kara's approach fails so, the decision to stop the perpetrator to save millions is the most rational. Mon-El taking Kara's side when he's from the future and knows of Kara's failure and has seen the same results makes absolutely no sense.
Lena's already starting to slide into that morally grey area. She lied to James about working on a cure to save millions when in fact, she wasn't and her inflated ego pushing her to go solo with Sam were two indicators of that true Luthor blood rising to the surface.
I loved that arc in the comics, but I'm really afraid that it is going to be a one or two and done kind of thing in the tv version....I would love to have that full arc, as well as Superwoman....not sure I'm going to get either.
