Midvale Recap

After any traumatic or life changing event, going back to a place that is forever familiar to you can be a way to escape the new circumstances that befall you and allow you to return to a time and place where things were simpler and safer to deal with. That is the very premise that Kara is looking to give her sister Alex in tonight's new episode, "Midvale". While adult Kara and Alex work through the recent events of Alex's choice to separate from Maggie, we the audience are given a treat as we travel back to when Kara and Alex found their core as sisters. Many events stood out to us all of which can be found below:

  1. Kara Doesn't Have a Car: When you can fly faster than any jetliner on Earth, the use of a car seems rather limiting. National City certainly doesn't require Kara to have a vehicle to keep up appearances but getting back to Midvale and to do so with Alex (without flying her there) requires the use of J'onn's Space Car!
  2. 10 Years Ago: After a switch between "Sad Drunk" and "Mean Drunk", Kara decides it’s no longer time to help Alex through her troubles for the night and the two head to bed. However, we wake up to a 10 years ago moment where we see the girls acting like true teenaged sisters. Fighting for bathroom time, yelling at each other, and of course keeping the peace, Helen Slater's Eliza Danvers! TOO CUTE
  3. Sibling Rivalry: "Try and Keep Up" couldn't have been said better. Alex and Kara are constantly trying to get the one up on each other. While Alex has the advantage when it comes to Earth history, Kara takes it with physical activities and math! It's fascinating how they already have that sibling competition but the love between them is still growing.
  4. Kara's Friend is Killed: After a very friendly and possibly romantic night, Kara's friend Kenny is found dead in the woods possibly where or near where Kara and Kenny were last night! What this means for Kara as a possible suspect could further complicate the situation.
  5. Alex Confronts Josie: Kara's friend Kenny, while largely ignored as a nerd, seemed to be the Midvale secret keeper. He had information on everyone...the high school quarterback, Alex's math skills, and Josie and Mr. Bernard! Alex and Josie have been friends since they were eight, but when it came to getting to the truth and figuring out what happened to Kara's friend, Alex didn't back down at all when confronting Josie. It might have been the first time she stood up for Kara.
  6. Kara Saves Alex/Meets Alura?: After Mr. Bernard (well not really) tries to run Kara and Alex off the road, it takes a jump off the bridge to avoid getting hit by the car. While that saves Alex, it makes Eliza furious and she get's J'onn to appear as Alura to try and knock some sense into Kara. J'onn takes the form of Alura to discuss why Kara can't use her powers because she'll endanger those that she loves.
  7. Sheriff Collins is Corrupt and Kara Saves Alex: Alex confronts Sheriff Collins and as it turns out, he plans on killing her except for the fact that she has the laptop. Once he's figured out where the laptop is, all bets are off ... except that he doesn't know that Kara's sister is a 15 year old Kryptonian teenager who is feeling very protective of her new sister now. BOOM, straight through the wall comes Kara and to hold the attention of the Sheriff, Alex couldn't have done a better job distracting him.

When the girls wake up and we are back with our adult versions of the sisters, Melissa and Chyler just nail it and bring home the full emotion of it. You get to see when Kara decided to become "human" and in her state now, she has made the choice not to be. Eliza has given her that advice not to abandon it. Further, there was no bed that Alex could have slept in except that one. A place where she felt safe and was watched over by her sister. The girls are both in tough places but the fact that they sang and danced their way back home to National City was possibly the best scene to leave the audience on. HOPE.

On another note, we can't sing the praises of Izabela Vidovic and Olivia Nikkanen higher after tonight's performance. They had the look which is important, but more so, they had the voice. There were times when Olivia was speaking where I could literally close my eyes and imagine Chyler Leigh saying the words. They were spot on with theit characters and to jump into those roles with the history of Alex and Kara ... well both should be praised! Izabela was Kara Davners hands down. The glasses rip, the flying and the way she moved all fit right into how Melissa portrays Supergirl. This was easily top 3 if not the best episode ever.

Of course, for those that were following our words intently last week, we mentioned that we have a special treat for this episode! While we are always excited to share our thoughts about the episode with you guys here on the site, for the first time ever you won't have to read them in just a couple of days. The incredible folks at Supergirl Radio have asked Kelsey and I to guest host an episode of their podcast with Rebecca Johnson and Morgan Glennon! We'll let you know when it’s ready, but we already know its going to be a blast!

This ep was okay. But I didn't think we'd get virtually the whole ep with past Kara/Alex. I thought we'd see more present Kara/Alex more at their home

Who else thought Kara was a bit hypocritical in regards to Alexander the way Kara's been behaving towards her friends and family?

This season is kinda all over place. The first 2 season had some guide, structure and theme.

Season 3 is actually a lot more focused and structured than s3 imo. Season 1 was about Kara finding her place in the world as a superhero, coming out of Superman's shadow and being free to be Kara Zor-El. In Season 2 we had Cadmus/Jeremiah, Mon-El and the Daxamites, Lena Luthor, Miss Martian and the white Martians, Alex's coming out arc, and Kara and Alex having love interests, oh and the Guardian arc. It did not know what to focus on, so much so that the Cadmus arc, which they set up since s1, suffered and was poorly developed. To this day we have no idea where Jeremiah is.

Season 3 on the other hand is a lot more focused. It's about Kara dealing with loss, it's about her regaining her humanity while Sam loses hers. We are seeing the development of the season's villain slowly developing almost every episode. Kara and Alex reconnecting after being so distant in season 2. There's also a theme of mothers with Sam being a mom, Alex wanting to be a mom, and Kara dreaming and thinking of her mom more frequently than she did last season (Spoilers..............we will also be meeting Winn's mother).

Season 3 is also bringing up lots of things set up in season 1, whereas season 2 seemed to try to ignore season 1 in many aspects imo.

I think this episode was ok. I wish they did this episode in season 1. I felt like it was a filler episode. I feel like the episodes prior to this one is also an unnecessary filler episode that will lead up to the crossover to the main. This season is kinda all over place. The first 2 season had some guide, structure and theme. Season 1-catching Ft.Rozz aliens and the emerge of supergirl. Season 2-Cadmus, season 3- ummm... origins of supergirl.idk. the girls who played young alex and young Kara did an awesome job. They looked more like the adult versions of Kara and Alex than the ones on season 1 & 2. I think kara and alex needed that getaway to regroup, relax, rethink, and enjoy each other. overall, I still love the show, this episode was cute and laid back. can't wait for the next episode.

I'm trying to reply to the comment's and I'm lost on how to do it. However, in smallville, J'onn knew that house of El.He worked alongside of them at one point. In Season 2 of Supergirl, he spoke the Kryptonian language. The dude got around. He couldn't have probed Kara's mind because Kryptonians are impervious to his telepathy. Duh. Another reason maybe the pod and the hologram. In season 2, Jeremiah Danvers told J'onn to take care of his family. J'onn said that he knew all about Alex's life midvale, how did he know so much? Well because he watched over them as they grew up. Kara must have talked about her mom so much that he drafted an image of her to shape shift in her.

J'onn did a good job playing that part .

Also during the search for the laptop, Kara’s X-Ray vision doubles as night vision and we see the action from her point of view as the computer in question is found. The flying scene with Izabela was AWESOME.

I think the writers have forgotten that SG & SM have infrared vision to see things in the dark and misuse x-ray vision as infrared vision.

When did they get infrared vision? Back in the 1950s 'Superman can't see in the dark' was an occasional plot element.

As the EPs have stated several times, this is a Universe unto itself, so pretty much whatever they want to do with her powers goes....

There were a couple of timeline issues with the episode.
2. Eliza couldn't have asked Jonn to appear as Alura, as mentioned by the Administrator, because Eliza didn't know green martians existed until Alex and Jonn showed up at her house looking for refuge in Season 1. Eliza apparently contacted the DEO and Jonn took it upon himself to visit with Kara. Jonn either probed Kara's mind to get an image of Alura in order to morph into her or he talked to Superman earlier who showed him some "family photos" at the fortress.

I assumed that the DEO had been monitoring the Danvers family since Kara landed in her pod so it was no surprise that J'onn showed up when he did to talk to Kara about using her powers.
I am confused as to how J'onn knew what Alura looked like to shapeshift into her. Did he probe Kara's mind? Or was Superman involved somehow, like Zendar and Kara Zor-El suggested?

Didn't the DEO have Kara's pod and that hologram projector?

I had forgotten about that. Thanks for reminding me.

Looking on the World Wide Web, I find that the Silver/Bronze Age Superman had infrared vision; during the 60s. https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmXoypizjW3WknFiJnKLwHCnL72vedxjQkDDP1mXWo6uco/wiki/Powers_and_abilities_of_Superman.html

My take on the J'onn/Alura thing is that Eliza didn't call anyone. My theory is:
Kara asks Chloe to decrypt the laptop.
Chloe calls Clark to warn him that Kara is trying to Nancy Drew her friend's murder and possibly put her identity at risk.
Clark calls J'onn (who knows what Alura looks like because he has access to Fort Rozz's records).
J'onn shows up at the Danvers house, probably after a call from Clark telling Eliza that a friend was coming to scare Kara straight.
If Eliza called anyone, it was Clark, and Clark sent J'onn. There is no way Eliza would call the DEO. At this point, she holds them responsible for Jeremiah's death and Henshaw (the real Henshaw) threatened to lock Kara up and experiment on her.

Very possible....still I didn't like that Jonn used Alura like that. Too soon....

Does the "You already voted" tick anyone else off?.....it just makes me want to vote again, just because.
