Melissa Benoist is Pregnant

A HUGE Congratulations is in order today for our Girl of Steel! Melissa Benoist went to her instagram with husband (and fellow two season co-star) Chris Wood to announce that there would be a new addition to their family. Melissa is pregnant! This isn't the first member of the cast to have a baby, our very own Andrea Brooks also was pregnant and has welcomed her child to the world this year! Notably "The Flash's" Danielle Panabaker aka Killer Frost is also pregnant this season! We want to wish Melissa, Chris and their family all the love and support in the world!

The Coronavirus will likely halt production soon. If they complete S5, it will likely be it. I dont think they will start season 6 filming immediately after S5, as rumored, to accomodate the pregnancy. Flash and Riverdale have shut down already. Health first and foremost.

I'd honestly be cool with them just doing Midvale for a few episodes or half a season or something to flesh out Kara and Alex's early life more.

We have had far too many Supergirl-lite episodes over the years. I would much rather they wait on Melissa.

Quoting LibertyPrime:
For my part, this moment is a time to share in the joy of a person for whom I have great affection.

The show will take care of itself. I'm sure the producers have considered this possibility and come up with contingencies. Generally, I get the impression that Berlanti's productions are among the most supportive of their talent.

Whether it's shifting the timeline of filming or using creative camera angles, they'll find a solution that works for Melissa and the show.

100% agree with Kelly and Liberty Prime. First priority is the health and happiness of mother and baby. The start of season 6 and its length will be worked out to accommodate Melissa.

It's been rumored that they might shoot a couple of more episodes in April, which would lead off season 6 (whenever that may start). This makes sense to me, and if true these may be episodes 21 and 22 of the current season, which were cut when the producers found out about Melissa's pregnancy, probably a couple of months ago. They'd be all set up for these logistically and personnel-wise, and Melissa may still be able to participate. This scenario may lead to a considerable cliff-hanger after episode 520, but it would seem like a good move cost-wise, and a good insurance policy to have them completed and ready to air next season. It would also give Melissa an extra cushion of time after the baby is born before returning to work. They could use them to start season 6, and fill in with reruns until she is back full-time.

Either way s6 will have dire ratings with months and months of no new episodes it's likely the last

I'm very happy for them. I wonder whether they will write it into the show or whether that might be mean a shortened season. I still think they should write in Powergirl to maybe take front and enter if Melissa can't do as much action for a while. Or maybe invent a reason why Kara has to leave town for a while and Alex has to hold up the fort for a while.

I think it would be a funny in joke if Mon-El was also the father on the show. And then the baby could go and live with him in the future for safety reasons or something.

1. I was hoping Greg would have Melissa play Power Girl on Titans.

2. Part of me feels that when the time comes... hopefully season 7 or 8... they could end Supergirl by her leaving to join the Legion in the future.

If they do decide to include her pregnancy, the could do flash forwards like they did on Arrow. I hated the flash forwards but that could explain a pregnant Kara.

I am thinking a shortened S6, allowing Melissa to be stateside with Chris if Thirtysomething (else) is picked up.

Ken one of the Paps in Vancouver, I thought had talked about this Season ending early and filming for S.6 starting early to accommodate a project of Melissa....he was saying this last month I believe, so I'm assuming the project he was talking about was the baby.

I can see a short 13 season for Season 6. That's cool with me as long as they are all Supergirl overflowing. Just means fewer throw away episodes. Cool....

Why would they mess with the winning formula? ;-)

****

Not to be facetious (and in agreement with LP's overall gist), it's because they can and they normally do. For them (the PTB, writers, etc.) to do otherwise would be completely out of character. :D

At this point in the show's lifecycle, throwaway episodes are a given, filler is a given, general show and script wonkiness is a given. Why mess with that! They've batted 1000% in that department for years! That ain't gonna change anytime soon! If we get 10, 13 or 20-22 episodes, the end result will be the same. :P

I could definitely go for Alex taking a more leading role for a while. Especially if Kara is lost or in a coma and Alex is trying to figure out ways to save her.

I like this idea also.

I was just thinking that in a lot of shows you have to guess when the star is pregnant or until it become obvious but Melissa treats her fans like family and let us know as soon as it was possible - she's a pretty cool person.

I believe that Melissa has to be 100 percent ready to go for the show to continue. The first episode for season 6 is when the star is available. No cutting corners. You don't want to cheapen the show. It's not like we haven't waited months and months before. I remember in season 3 with that annoying supergirl flies countdown clock had close to 2 hundred days until air time. I hope they don't push her. I can wait.

I think it is very unlikely that they will push Melissa before she is ready. That is what I like about the idea of lost or in a coma - that is a plot that can go on forever. No one wants Melissa to come back before her time - I think we all feel we are willing to wait.
