Ever since Supergirl landed on Earth, Superman was there to welcome her to her new adoptive planet and take her to the safe haven of the Danvers home. When season 2 launched, the powers that be knew they could no longer have Superman in the shadows. Tyler Hoechlin's Superman was cast and his ability to portray the Man of Steel has been heralded as one of the best Supermans in this millennia. Tyler's Superman commanded the respect of the audience but took nothing away from Supergirl. Now that we are into season four and we've all but circled the Superman/Supergirl Lena/Lex/Lillian Luthor lore, Supergirl is finally ready to bring in the big bad himself, LEX LUTHOR to this season! Executive Producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller has this to say about bringing in the Superman arch nemesis:

We’re beyond excited to introduce iconic villain, Lex Luthor, to Supergirl and to weave him into our story this season. We’ve talked about having Lex on the show since its inception and we’re excited to have him finally arrive. We can’t wait for him to shake things up in National City and watch him go toe-to-toe with not only Supergirl, but his sister Lena Luthor.

It should be noted that with Superman returning for the crossover, Lex will NOT be in the crossover. Casting for the iconic role is currently underway and the role is expected to be recurring.

There is a lot of potential, here. But it makes me wonder if the Sons of Liberty will be an all-season baddie, or if it'll be a half season thing. Because they still have to deal with the doppleganger and Lex, in the back half. We know that much and it's still only October!

If the Superman from Supergirl is a veteran hero, then Lex Luthor would be the veteran villain and it would make sense for Michael Rosenbaum to reprise as Lex. I hope Lex will wear the battle suit and lead the Legion of Doom!!

I think the best choice for this one would be bring back Smallville Alum Michael Rosenbaum. He's talked about retaking the role of Lex Luthor.
