Just heard the news that another writers strike may happen unless negotiations are met. I hope SG won't be affected by this I remember reading back in 2007 how so many shows were hurt by it even cancelled etc. The news also says that writing for shows starting in the Autumn will be hurt as well.

I'm very relieved that they came to a positive conclusion. I remember the old writer's strike and it was really awful for a lot of shows. Very negative consequences.

To put a wrap on this thread, strike averted.

I had a feeling that they were going to come to an agreement, everything that was a problem had a pretty good solution for all involved....MUCH more so than back in 2007.

If the writers do have to strike, their rights take precedence over our entertainment.

To an extent....

What are they asking for... well in this particular instance it is a good proportion of allowing them to get work at other studios when their "time commitment" has been finished with these shorter seasons...so that lets say they were one of the writers on "Riverdale", with its short season, they couldn't write on say a Fox show that was in the first half of the Fall season, liiiiiiiiiiike.... "Scream Queens". So they are missing out on $$$$$$$$$. That is something that is doable. Whereas back in 2007 it was over the $$$$ they were getting or weren't getting from the sale of DVD's.

It wasn't just DVD's. It was also what was called at the time "new media," how much they would be paid for writing that, the residual terms, etc. The producers insisted it wouldn't amount to anything.

You know what we call "new media" today? Netflix Originals.

IMO, this can be taken care of without a strike....if both parties are willing to give something. If the writers are willing to give nothing in this, then no, IMO their "wants" do not trump the job they are already contracted to do.

Except that if they walk, it probably won't happen until the current contract expires, which means they would NOT be contracted to do the job at that point.

Thanks @evrafter for posting that Twitter image.

DVD sales was the main problem, Netflix, etc still was tied more to DVD's back then....The new media stuff is tied more to what is going on now than back in 2007. 10 years ago Netflix as we know it today didn't exist. It was still basically long season for all shows, you didn't have the A&Es, TNTs, putting out series after series, most shortened etc....just wasn't happening in 2007, far different climate now on TV.

@Fedguy well said
@Kelly could be that a few episodes of next season are already written because of early renewal.

Lets hope a mutually beneficial contact is reached before 5/1.

One of the writers of Supergirl recently retweeted an article addressing writers about the strike.

Do you have the link for that?

Looks like it wasn't an article, but rather, and tweet thread writers were watching....

Here is a list of some of the shows impacted by the 2007 strike. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effect_of_the_2007%E2%80%9308_Writers_Guild_of_America_strike_on_television

With the early renewals of Supergirl and others on the CW they may have a good number of episodes written by the time the strike actually happens. In 2007 some series already had most if not all of their scripts written. This could also be why so many shows this season on all networks have already been renewed months before the Upfronts.

I've seen WGA strikes do damage in the past. Supergirl might not be as vulnerable as some shows because it's not as heavily based in continuing stories ( there's a lot going on besides the long arcs), but Heroes was devastated by the 2007 strike, and even the 1989 Batman was affected by one; they couldn't rewrite during filming.

Would Supergirl be canceled because of a Writer's Strike? no, that is ridiculous. It is the #2 show on the CW, they aren't going to cancel it over a writer's strike. HOWEVER, could the Season #3 be postponed? Yes....it has happened before. But there have been several threats of writer's strikes over the past couple of decades and most often they get them settled. The writer's strike in 2007 was for 100 days and they actually got very little out of it. I'm not sure they are ready to do that again for so little.

The big thing for them right now is being locked in with a certain studio that is cutting number of episodes per season for scripted series.....and not allowing them to move between studios. That, I think is something doable. They are positioning because Upfronts are coming in May. So they send a warning letter out to ad companies....in hopes of getting some push back from them with the studios.
