So I've seen quite a few theories out there about the Legion of Superheroes possibly appearing sometime soon (whether that be in season 3 or later). And to be frank, I feel torn about it.

On the one hand, it would be GREAT to have the legion grace our televisions, they could offer so much to the storytelling.
But on the other hand, as we saw over the course of season 2, the writers had plenty of issues with writing for an ensemble cast; so I don't have much faith in them doing the legion and the sg cast justice. The writers seemed to either spend way too much time on a character and/or not enough time on another (it all felt really disjointed to me).

So I was just wondering what everyone else thought about the legion possibly being brought in.

~~UPDATE~~

Now that we know we'll be getting Saturn Girl (and Valor) in the show this season I think it's time to bring this thread back.

  • Any theories on how they'll be brought into the narrative? Rumors are that Mon-El returns in 3.07 but won't be in the crossover (which I find strange, but again it's just rumors).

  • Do you think we'll get another member or members of the Legion further into the season?

  • Will Mon-El be removed from the Legion to stay behind with Kara? I don't see how he can continue to call himself a member if he isn't there with them, but I fear if they do remove him it'll cause an uproar with the diehard comic book fans and likely the average fans as well.

  • Is this maybe a backdoor pilot for a LoS spinoff?

Personally, I think a full-fledged introduction of the LoS would be way too premature and as Kiwi pointed out, it would diverge / split the Supergirl narrative too much. In my opinion, I think such an introduction should take place as the series winds down (series finale, perhaps) or as a spin-off series altogether. ;)

i think if the LOS were brought in, you would see at most 1 or 2 as special guest stars for an episode or 2, and when the big action sequence comes up think of how the white martians were used in the finale.

LoS should be its own separate show if they're brought in. I could see them having a sort of backdoor pilot on SG, but they shouldn't be a full-time thing. The CW superhero shows like having a sort of ensemble cast a la Flash and Arrow (excluding LoT because it's not centered around one character), but having Kara lead the LoS would be taking it too far.

I agree that Legion of Superheroes could be a story down the line but not in Season 3. The show already gets crowded with to many story lines anyway and if you add even more characters it would get even more muddled than it is now.

If they want to do more than an episode or two maybe they should do a spinoff like some of you have suggested. Then they could focus more on the Legion and add as many characters as they like.

Reading these replies really makes me want the network to create a LoS spinoff. With Arrow looking like it's coming to a close very soon, there would be an empty spot for a new DCTV show :D

Stephen Amell has signed a 7 year contract, and I would imagine that if he wanted to go another couple of years after that, the CW would be more than happy for him to do so. So, at the least there is 2 more seasons of Arrow.

As far as an LoS spinoff, that would really depend on how soon they bring them into Supergirl...I would be surprised that we get a full on Legion this season. I think if we see Brainiac 5 this season, then the Legion is not all that far behind. With Mon-El in the Phantom Zone and they bring him out cured (some saying Ep. 3, I say Ep. 6), then Brainiac 5 may be closer than we think.

That can probably, pretty much be said about Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist as well.... I would venture to guess that all of them signed the same type of contract. Melissa's might be a little different with the switch, but was probably a 7 year as well.

Oh dang! Then let me amend my previous statement: must be nice to be the lead of a CW DCTV show :D

I'm worried about getting the Legion because when there are so many characters then Supergirl gets lost in her own show. We already have Guardian and Jonn, not to mention Alex, so if we add more heroes then will Supergirl still be the center of the show. Also, would this be someone else she takes orders from like she does the DEO. Also, Mon-El was bad enough about not listening to Kara so I don't want someone else who will just argue with her all the time.

I guess if it's just a one or two episode thing then it wouldn't be so bad.

I don't think that the Legion would work all that well for a tv show. I think it takes too many special effects and it is not that well known of a property. At the most I could maybe picture a show where some members of the Legion get stuck in our time and don't know how to get back. Like the premise of Legion Lost: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legion_Lost

But I think the Superhero hype is slowly dying down a bit, so I don't think that they would do another show, and not necessarily with a book series and characters who are not that well known.

I do think that Legion characters will guest star, but I don't think that they will be regulars. Maybe they will show them drop Mon-El off on earth after being cured with some sort of mission to fulfill. I think if Mon-El eventually becomes a hero and leaves the show, then I think Brainiac5 would guest star at one point of another. Like he might not be Kara's great and forever love, but if they kept Kara without a single fixed boyfriend and had her keep bouncing around and being single, it makes only sense that as a comic callback Brainiac5 would show up at least for 2-3 episodes.

I like reading what you all have to say about this. After reading everyone's thoughts, I find myself not wanting the Legion on Supergirl. I really like the idea of a spinoff, as it would allow for so much story-telling. As far as concern of the LoS not being well-known enough to garner a spinoff, I don't think that really matters here. Look at Legends of Tomorrow, the characters there aren't exactly known among non-comics lovers, but they still made the show regardless of that fact. I think a LoS show could easily work. With so many superhero movies out and coming out, another superhero TV show should have no problem gaining loyal viewers, especially when it has ties to the Superman/Supergirl lore.

And starlord, I get that you really like Mon-El..that's fine. But we can't be making statements saying 'he isn't leaving' or that 'he is leaving' because we're not the writers. We don't know his fate...try to keep that in mind.

Mon-El isnt leaving. If they bring in LoS then they will guest Star and get Mon-El and Kara will join him Maybe also J'onn to help out in those episodes

I meant at the end of this season. I think I read somewhere that they had a two year plan for his arc. So it is possible he leaves after season 3, for example to join the Legion.

I think it could go either way, I think if they decide not to keep him after season 3 then we might see other love interests like Brainiac5 come in and out. If they decide to keep him, I can picture them not bringing on Brainiac5.

I find myself not wanting the Legion on Supergirl. I really like the idea of a spinoff, as it would allow for so much story-telling.

At this point every CW show started with the character or characters showing on a different CW show first. Even if they, or actually especially if they were doing a spinoff they would use a CW show to first show off the characters and Supergirl would be the most logical choice.

I think regardless of whether a spinoff is an option or not (I personally think it isn't, as I said, I think the comic book tv gold rush is waning, Legends of Tomorrow and Riverdale I think don't have the best ratings), we would certainly see the Legion for 2-3 episodes. Doesn't mean that they would necessarily have a ton of screentime.

They are not developing Kara and Mon-El as a potential endgame like this if he was leaving. Plus to actually introduce another character and building yet another love interest for her is pretty much done and it would be a waste of time in fact that was the complaining in s2. Kara and Mon-El are so huge now that the ship got nominated for a TCA.

Being a series regular doesn't have a lot to do with it. You can be a series regular and they kill off the character. Also, Mehcad is a series regular and his screentime was very low especially at the end of the season.

Also, I think it's a little early to be calling Kara and Monel endgame. We don't have any idea what the writers have planned. They might be or they might not be but I don't think any of us can say for sure.

Series regular doesn't hold much weight. It just means they're contractually obligated to the show.

As for the 'endgame' stuff, that's up for debate. They built up Kara/James all S1 to then break them up in S2. The same can be done for this relationship. The only people invested in this ship are the shippers. Media and general audience couldn't care less. As for the TCAs, they aren't anything big; nobody really cares about them aside from shippers.

I'd much rather see Mon-El get a legitimate retcon in S3 than continuing to push the relationship. We didn't get much about him so I'd like that to be built. With a nice build on his character then maybe we could a Legion spinoff.

Well would definitely rather see Mon-El on the show and have him be with Kara than for him to have a solo story and for Supergirl's screentime to be used to springboard a Legion spinoff. At least if he's with her then there is sense to him being on the show and having screentime and Kara actually gets something out of it.

Plus as a rule of thumb, when storylines radically get retooled from what the writers usually planned, it usually makes the stories worse, not better.

You're right I didn't vote. I've said before that I don't vote for TCAs because they have a bad reputation for being rigged. I'd rather spend my time voting for things like the EW cover. But that's just me.
