We're entering season 4, and the well of established villains to draw from begins to grow thin. They've already used several "Superman" villains, many of whom were re-written to be Supergirl-only villains, like Parasite, Bizarro, Myxy, etc. Frankly, Supergirl doesn't have that big a rogues gallery of her own. The list of characters remaining who could truly become a season long baddie is dwindling.

Greg Berlanti recently said he'd like to use Lex Luthor. There are obvious hurdles, as they need permission from Warner to use certain characters. But I think Lex could provide some of the richest material to work with for a season long baddie. If not for season 4, then some future season.

Lex could be fantastic, emotionally compelling, and bring a new dynamic to the show. If Superman were somehow written off, to explain his absence (being off world, banished to the phantom zone, something like that), then Lex could see that as his opportunity to rise back to prominence. With Superman gone, the focus of his vengeance would become Supergirl, trying to punish her for the crimes he perceives Superman to have committed against him.

We're still on the fence (perhaps eternally) regarding Lena will sway good or evil, especially when she learns Kara's secret. Bringing Lex into the fold could provide a much bigger emotional conflict for Lena. She was never really close to Lillian, but she said that Lex was the person she was closest to. If anyone could sway her to the darker side, it would be him.

If written and cast correctly, he could be more diabolical than Lillian, as intelligent and cunning as Lena, but with none of the moral compass.

I think he'd be the perfect season long (or maybe half-season long) villain. The biggest problem, to me, is who could possibly follow him as a big bad?

There are other villains I'd love to see included in this show, but I'm not sure we will; Mongul, Darkseid (or maybe Granny Goodness and her Furies). This would be an EXTREMELY dark turn, but I think it'd be incredibly compelling for something to trigger Winn, and he becomes the new Toyman. He'd be the most dangerous adversary, as he knows everything about both Supergirl and the DEO. I love Winn, and would hate to see him turn bad, but at the same time, it would make for amazing television.

I wanna hear from you guys. Who do you think should be the big bad of season 4 and beyond? What other villains would you like to see in the smaller, villain-of-the-week capacity?

IMO it’s premature to start speculation on season 4. We’ve only seen 56.5% of this season. Don’t delete this thread but I propose we leave it alone until at least after the official season 4 synopsis is released at upfront.

Personality I want to sit back and enjoy the longest continuous run of episodes we’ve ever had before I think about next season.

I do like Granny Goodness and the Furies. And it gives a possible new addition to team Supergirl if they ever put Barda on the show too with that plotline.

Also maybe Faora obviously too.

Hopefully they can draw out more from Supergirl's comics to bring her own villains instead of her cousin's. However, Lex Luthor is out of the question because he will be used in the upcoming Metropolis TV series with Lois Lane.

Given a history of using Superman villains I hope it isn't Lex.

Here are points I think are important.

1. Can and in early stages will defeat Kara easily.

2. Powers other than superior strength. Just like The Flash has exhausted the usage of speedsters, so should this show explore villains with abilities other than being strong.

3. Let's get a male season villain. What is a feminist show that is too afraid to have men and women fight each other?

Edit: 4: This appears a lot in the comments so far, I don't really get why. I think it's critical that it is NOT a character that has already had a stint as some kind of villain before, especially not Cadmus again.

It could be Lena or Cadmus; given the way things are going and spoilers we have heard.

I am not sure about Lex because he is mainly a Superman villain and I don't see any need to have him as Supergirl's.

We could also bring back Maxwell Lord or expand Adrian Pasdar's character to actually be a villain to SG than Lena, if we are going for the male villain.

It would be awesome if Greg makes the whole Red Lantern story a thing, maybe having Atrocitus as a villain, and Guy Gardner as a mentor to Kara

Yes, but in the original Action Comics, Lex was a major villain in both Superman and Supergirl stories. He really considered himself an antagonist of both of the "Super-Cousins".(He succeeded in synthesizing kryptonite very early on...)
In my own fan fiction stories, I've used Lex but have said that he's still in prison. But he still has open lines of communication with his henchmen, and is also able to get recorded messages out to Kara. (He probably has a smuggled cell phone...) So Lex can still plan and execute his schemes against the Supergirl Team (including holding Kara hostage). But the Supergirl Team has Lena as a source of information, and she has an inside line on much of what Lex is up to....

I agree 100% with this sentiment. Let S3 run its course before getting all worked up about who/what may appear in S4. ;)

I really only started a thread because of what Berlanti said about wanting to use Lex. It doesn't hurt to have fun, and talk about who we'd like to see used for short and long term villains, next year. After all, it's pretty much set in stone that they'll be dealing with the Worldkillers for a vast majority of the rest of this season.

Also, how about Dr. Light, master of the entire light spectrum. He always used "red sun radiation" to strip Kara and Clark of their superpowers. (But sometimes Batman was able to save them, since the red-sun radiation didn't affect him.) I've already used Dr. Light a couple of times in my fan fiction stories, and thought it worked out well for me (and I'm not even a professional screenwriter)....

Hmmmmm.... I think once it is known that a series is coming back for another season speculation can be had by all.

I don't want to see a villain we have seen in the past actually, I have loved and I'm still loving the Reign arc so, whatever they have planned for next year......it is going to have to be spectacular because the Reign arc thus far has been fantastic. If we have the New Krypton storyline being hinted at then there will be all kinds of stories to come from that..... I've also heard rumors of Super Woman and Katie, but I don't put too much stock in that rumor at all...I don't think Katie could pull that off, nothing against her, but I don't think she is the right fit for that part......and we may have Lex coming into play, so who knows. It is fun, however, to just think about it.....
