I don't know how many of you have watched it, but The Ray (seen in Crisis on Earth-X) has an animated spin-off on CW Seed. The reason I'm bringing it up is that Melissa is voicing Overgirl on the show, and I actually think she's doing a better job there than she did playing the role in the crossover. (Of course, the crossover was brutal for her as an actress, so I'm not complaining.)
I think Melissa did a good job too..
But, in any case, to some extent what an actor pulls off also depends on the viewer. There'd be some who would see a happy and cute in Melissa no matter what she does (I am not saying you are among them by the way.). Not exactly typecasting; but more... you don't sense the danger because you subconsciously know what is happening and you chalk it up to acting deficiencies.
It becomes even more difficult when we are exposed to two different versions of the same character unlike a totally different character in a different movie (as in, if the same actor were to play a villain in a movie).
Also: the combination of facial expressions, body language and voice will have a different effect than just the voice. It easy to discount familiarity when you are just listening just to the voice than if all your senses were bombarded by it.

IMO, she did a fantastic job playing Overgirl in the crossover.... not really sure you can compare the two.

I watched it a few days ago.
In the crossover, Ray said he was from Earth 1. If you wondered how he got to Earth X, watch this and find out.
Also, back in Supergirl season 1, some people complained about Red Tornado being a villain instead of a hero. Here, he's a hero, and voiced by the same actor who played him in "Red Faced."
