I hope this is better than the Future State Kara Zor-El Superwoman two parter. I didn’t like that series at all.

Take this as opinion of the writer of the review. I had the same concern when I saw the first 8 pages. I still feel burned by the two issue Future State.

I wasn’t planning on reading the Woman of Tomorrow series but a friend gave me the first issue. Those expecting a Supergirl story prepare to be disappointed. I can’t believe this is supposed to be a “character defining” series. This review contains lots of spoilers but without spoiling anything I agree with the reviewer, almost any character could be substituted for Kara and it wouldn’t change the basic almost exact rip off of True Grit. I also agree with the reviewer, it’s beautifully drawn and inked.

Bottom line I was very disappointed in the two issue Future State and this series is a big disappointment too.

Well, it will be. As a longtime Supergirl fan, I was pretty impressed by the setup, as it takes no nostalgic prisoners. Those looking for retro superhero tropes won't find that here.

At long last, DC Comics finally put some A-List creators on a new Supergirl story that isn't merely retreading the same old nostalgia-tugging clichés that don't work anymore in modern times. However, the main draw for this new series is the gorgeous artwork from Bilquis Evely and Mat(heus) Lopes, which seems to be channeling the futuristic work of Moebius in their use of imaginative landscapes.

BTW, Anj at that dying SG comics blog of his, has been predisposed to give the comic a grossly biased 'review' from the start, as he's been attacking the author for allegedly borrowing a premise from the Coen Bros. remake of "True Grit" even before he read a single word of dialogue from the comic. Writer Tom King, for his part, now seems to be touting this bias like a 'badge of honor' as proof this will eventually be a game-changer of a Supergirl story. Anj has probably gotten even more incensed that he's being played for his set-in-stone hivemind...but he asked for it. :)

I’m in full agreement that the artwork is beautiful. I really hope you’re right and it becomes a great story for Kara. I don’t keep up with writers or critics in the comic book world. Upon further research Tom King is a big name writer so it’s nice that DC would use him for a Supergirl story.

I read some reviews that don’t like the setup at all but that wasn’t the issue for me, I see the potential and appreciate no mention at all of Kara’s more famous cousin. It’s different in a good way that Ruthye doesn’t know who Supergirl is, anything about space travel or beings from other planets. I’m totally good with a Kara who swears and wants to get drunk on her 21st birthday.

The setup so far is definitely from True Grit, Ruthye=Mattie Ross and Kara=Rooster Cogburn. That’s not inherently a bad thing but makes me concerned that Kara won’t be the main protagonist in the story. Do a search for “who is the main protagonist in true grit” and the answer is Mattie. It’s Ruthye who’s narrating the story and to be fair that might be necessary in the first installment to tell us how Kara crosses paths with Ruthye and why Kara would see a bit of herself in Ruthye. Is it possible to make Kara the main protagonist moving forward, absolutely I hope that Tom King diverges from the True Grit storyline and does just that. In literature the narrator isn’t always the main protagonist but to me comics are a bit different and if it’s a “character defining” story that character should be the narrator. I’m disappointed that it’s not clear in the first installment that this is Kara’s story.

I really didn’t like who Kara had become in the two issue Future State Kara Zor-El Superwoman so my big fear is that’s who the Kara in this story is destined to become.

Somehow I don't think that this new story is going to turn into Future State, which seems more like it was published as a palette cleanser/red herring in order to shake things up in the comics DCU for a bit.

A couple of things regarding True Grit that already diverge from this story:

Rooster Cogburn wasn't 21 in his tale. Kara in this story certainly is, and indulged in a typical young adult 'rite of passage' by going out and getting drunk (on a red sun planet (where she could feel its effects, unlike on Earth). It's fairly normal for oneself to go out and prove that "I'm legal now!". :)

As you have noticed, the narration is by Ruthye; but it seems to me that she's already embellishing her tale by announcing in advance that Kara avenges her on this quest to kill Krem. However, in True Grit, Rooster Cogburn doesn't kill Tom Chaney for Mattie. Mattie inadvertently does it herself.

The conclusion of the miniseries is out today and it looks like Supergirl gets a new suit.

I hope folks stuck with this book, because it's truly a great Kara story even if it's told through Ruthye's eyes. I thought it was beautiful all the way around.

Also, spoiler from that artwork that was posted: Krypto doesn't die!
