I said some of this in the recap article.

Despite ups and downs, I thought it was a solid finale. And that last 30 minutes or so really just left me feeling everything. Kara's sense of loss, being aimless. The wedding. Nia and Brainy. The last couch scene. Cat's return to give some long missed advice to Kara. Her acknowledgement of Kara's secret. Kara deciding to reveal herself. And especially the music choices in that last scene. It really drove home that this is the end, and that kinda sucked, lol. It did it's job, but it made me care about these characters more than I have in a very long time.

I'm glad they didn't kill Kara, or have her decide to stop being Supergirl, or send her to the future. She's still here. she's still Supergirl. It's just a new chapter.

My biggest complaint is probably the fact that it doesn't feel like an ending. It feels like a new chapter. One I wish we could explore in a 7th, non-COVID hindered season, so we could see this new dynamic, and also get that desired last crossover with The Flash, so they could have one final hurrah.

It's dumb, but this is gonna stick with me for a while. They stuck the landing, in the sense that they really made me care that it was over, and want it to NOT be over. I'm gonna mourn this show for a while. Both because it's over, and because, when we ended, it felt like Kara was the only character who wasn't in a place of happiness or contentment. It felt like everyone around her had a happy ending, and hers was left uncertain. And that's a strong ending, because it made me feel this way. But at the same time, the ending makes it seem like Kara is less sure of her place in the world than she ever has been. And I just don't know how I feel about ending it on that note...

In summation...it was a strong finale because of everything it made me feel. Could it have been better? Absolutely. But a show is doing it's job when it makes me feel something. And I felt a lot with this. I know she's got her book, family, and shorter brunette hair. But I sincerely hope Melissa returns for a guest spot in either The Flash or Superman & Lois (ideally both) so we can see where Kara's at after this finale.

I can't speak for anyone else. But this version of the character will always be my Supergirl. Thank you to Melissa Benoist for six wonderful years. I wish we had more, but I'm grateful for what we had.

Performer of the Week: Kelly Reilly

By Team TVLine / November 13 2021, 7

HONORABLE MENTION | If Melissa Benoist is going to do one thing as Supergirl, it’s make you feel like you can change the world, and that was never more apparent than in the Arrowverse show’s heartfelt series finale. Benoist didn’t just deliver for the last episode; she brought the whole Amazon warehouse. Supergirl’s packed sendoff asked a lot of Benoist, who was tasked with action-heavy battle scenes, delivering a game-changing speech that would inspire humans to save themselves, singing with a live band, conveying the Kryptonian’s vulnerability in revealing her secret identity to the world and leaving us with a relaxed Kara after going through what was probably an emotional gauntlet. Sometimes, you can tell when an actor is ready to leave, and their performance feels phoned in. However, Benoist was the antithesis of that and gave fans the proper closure they deserved.

I thought I’d share this story from a contributor to the site The Mighty who recognized the symptoms of PTSD in Kara throughout the back half of the final season.
”Symptoms of PTSD include avoidance, lacking interest in activities you once enjoyed, being easily startled or frightened, always being on guard for danger, and trouble concentrating. Additionally, PTSD often includes having intrusive thoughts, such as reliving the traumatic event as if it were happening again, recurrent unwanted memories of the traumatic event and irritability or anger outbursts due to the traumatic event. Throughout the sixth season of Supergirl, all of these symptoms are present.”

The symptoms of PTSD aren’t always debilitating dramatic episodes resulting in an inability to function or function at a high level. It’s common for suffers to act like they’re fine, the old fake it until they make it. It not just the literal flashbacks we saw Kara have it was also some of the decisions she made and reactions she had that the contributor saw as symptoms of PTSD.
”As Kara returns to Earth, trauma appears to overwhelm her. She starts having what’s clinically referred to as “flashbacks” of being trapped with the phantoms. The show replays the look of pain on her face as the phantoms take over her thoughts, and viewers watch as Kara relives her trauma again and again. The phantoms created lingering panic about the possibility of her friends and family getting hurt.
Due to this, Kara pushes the rest of her life away, focusing solely on being Supergirl. This means that she quits the job that she loves, pushes away friends and colleagues, and continues to have flashbacks — even in the middle of saving the day. Eventually, she stops living her normal life altogether. She’s afraid of being Kara because it means putting Supergirl aside — which could lead to the people around her”

This show took care in portraying mental illness and showing even for superheroes it’s ok not to be ok. I believe that will be just one of many of its legacies and since Melissa and many others involved with the show are mental health advocates one I’m sure they’re proud of.

Esme leaves a little Christmas gift.

The adorable Mila Jones on her Instagram has left a little video montage for Azie Tesfai on her recent birthday. And included in this is some behind the scenes of the series finale...INCLUDING A LITTLE DANCING FROM A CERTAIN M-B.

Here's the dancing in question...

And...I always though Melissa was an NSYNC FAN.

This may be the last time I say it but...SHE'S SO SILLY!!!!!! :p :p :p :p :p

YEAR IN REVIEW

18 Series Finales From 2021, Graded

By Team TVLine / December 26 2021

With over 80 shows having ended this year, we definitely said goodbye to many, many comedies and dramas in 2021. But not every single one of them was intended to be a farewell, and even those that were didn’t always hit the mark.

Below, TVLine has gathered more than a dozen planned series enders that stood out — for better or for worse — from the past 12 months. Among our selections, you’ll find several broadcast faves like NBC’s Superstore and CBS’ Mom, a pair of CW superheroes, and critical darlings Pose and PEN15. We’ve also singled out the final hours of Shameless, The Bold Type, Lucifer and Wynonna Earp — but is that a good thing? You’ll just have to read on to find out!

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING FINALES ARE NOT RANKED. Rather, the grades chosen reflect how each TV show did (or did not) stick the landing based on their respective runs. Also, as stated above, we did not grade every single series finale from the past year, but instead chose a select few series that ended on their own terms.

Scroll down to see which finales made their mark on Team TVLine, then share your opinions on the best (and worst) series sign-offs of 2021.

The Arrowverse show’s final battle was a bit rushed and all over the place, but it didn’t take away from the rest of the hour, which was a lovely celebration of our heroes. Alex and Kelly’s beautiful wedding gave our heroes a chance to breathe after a high-stakes fight, and we could think of no better way to end the hour than with Cat Grant making her long-awaited return to reveal Kara’s superhero identity to the world. Overall, it was a nice sendoff for longtime fans.

I agree with the grade and the summary in this. Part 1 had thrills but was here there and everywhere. Part 2, even with the wedding (I promise to not go into some rant as after all I am Catholic!), we had final character development, a bit of a dance party (with one of the many [un]official theme songs of the Danvers Sisters, Sister Sledge's 1979 smash "We Are Family.";). But lastly...WE HAD CAT GRANT RETURN to unveil Supergirl to the world. A bit of an ironic twist on what Superman did to Supergirl in Action Comics #285 in February 1962.

TVFanatic seems to agree.

What do good TV shows and bad TV shows have in common -- they all come to an end.

This year we had to bid farewell to some fan favorites and some we didn't even have a chance to be fans of before cancellation.

The real question is whether these finales provided a satisfying resolution for their respective series?

Scroll down to find out which shows made our best and worst list.

Supergirl - Best
Supergirl had one of the best series finales this year.

The final episode brought back fan-favorites Winn, Mon-El, and James to help defeat Lex.

Everyone was there for Alex and Kelly's wedding day. Brainy realized he loved Nia more than the future and returned, declaring his love for her.

And our heroine, Kara, finally decided to have it all. She became editor-in-chief of CatCo with Cat Grant and came clean about being Supergirl.

The last scene with the game night and interview real did me in too ...in a good way.

I'm glad they didn't kill Kara, or have her decide to stop being Supergirl, or send her to the future. She's still here. she's still Supergirl. It's just a new chapter.

Same here.I so didn't want a downbeat ending.I didn't think they were going to kill Supergirl after Melissa's interview in the spring. But I was worried they would depower her or just have her not be Supergirl anymore. And ofcourse Supergirl leaving for the future or going to Argo,I didn't want because I didn't want to see Kara leave her loved ones, her family.I wanted to see Kara still with her sister.Being a aunt to her niece, having her friends still in her life and being at ease both being Kara & Supergirl. It's why I was hoping for the identity reveal because that is how they've been handling Clark/Superman in the comics fo the last two years.

This ending we got was the exact one I was hoping for.

My biggest complaint is probably the fact that it doesn't feel like an ending. It feels like a new chapter. One I wish we could explore in a 7th, non-COVID hindered season, so we could see this new dynamic, and also get that desired last crossover with The Flash, so they could have one final hurrah.

Agree, would love to have seen a 7th season exploring the new status quo especially since it's been explored very much with Superman in the comics for the last like two years.

With that said,I'm not sure they would of revealed Kara's identity if the series was continuing. It feels to me anyway like a decision that was based on the fact the series was ending.

I so wanted a final Flash team up too.But I honestly think we will see Kara back at some point down the line in a guest spot or crossover appearance.Melissa's EW.com interview really gave me a lot of hope.I got the impression that she really enjoyed doing the crossovers and interacting with the other Arrroverse leads.Once Melissa had time to recharge,I really do think we'll see Supergirl again in the Arrowverse.

"This ending we got was the exact one I was hoping for."

It sure was, but actually even better than what I had suggested. Kara didn't just "turn the lights off" at CatCo (like Dennis Franz in the "NYPD Blue" series finale) - she moved up to the editor-in-chief position (at the age of 30)! Kara didn't hang up her cape, either - she took off her glasses for the last time (as some others here predicted she might). So Supergirl is still in National City, along with her Superfriends and her family. And she even gets to continue being Aunt Kara to Esme!

" think she's in a place of contentment personally"

That's what I think, too. Melissa's facial expression in the final frames (after she made the decision to "come out" to the world) certainly seems to indicate that to me.

"But I will say a great finale does make me want more."

Yes, indeed!

Anyway, I am going to try to write some of that "next chapter" myself, and pick up Kara's story where the CW left off. And I will be posting links to my forthcoming fan-fiction stories here in the Forum. (But I'm not going to have so many Superfriends, and will add a couple of my own original characters to the mix.)

From the people at Superman Homepage, in another unscientific poll the question "Should Supergirl make an appearance in Season 2 of 'Superman & Lois'"? SURVEY SAID...

With “Supergirl” now over, fans want to see Kara make an appearance in Season 2 of “Superman & Lois” with nearly half of you voting “Yes, definitely!” for this poll. Interestingly, 17% of you are adamant that you do NOT want Supergirl to show up on “Superman & Lois”.
