Supergirl S3 E7 "Wakeup:" Discussion and Review

I wonder if Kara's necklace means something more to the narrative.

When kara saw and grabbed it monel sort of yanked it back from her and tucked it back in his shirt. So I can't help but wonder if it's pertinent to something else going on in the storyline.

It didn't come off to me as its mine not yours. It came off to me as that was the one thing that kept him alive and moving forward. Then within that 7 years he falls in love, and from what I could garner, had told Saturn Girl everything about Kara and what she meant to him, I think Saturn Girl may feel indebted to Kara for helping Mon-el become the man he is today. And that necklace is like his heroes heart so to speak, so he feels that if someone takes it away, it takes away what Kara gave him in becoming the hero he is today.

I completely agree that it means a lot to him. But the way he jerked it away evokes (to me at least) a sense of 'don't' to kara.
He told kara how much it means to him. And he spoke so reverently about it so I know it means a great deal to him, but I still can't get past the way he practically yanked it back from her.

If I'm wrong and it isn't anything else then I strongly believe he should give it back to kara. It served its purpose for him but now it's time to return it.

I think it holds a greater purpose at the moment....I have some thoughts on that, but will not discuss them at this moment. I will however before the end of the season. Because I think it holds a huge purpose later on. Of course my speculations very seldom come true, but I have a good one now and again.

Just remember, he is from the future, so he knows far more than what he has said. I think he married Saturn Girl, after something happens in the future, and I will leave it at that.....

And good grief, how tragic is the Reign story. Sam thought she was going to be given this wonderful gift like Supergirl, and the hero that her daughter wanted her to be so badly, and instead .................................. just wow. The writers this season are really unafraid of just cutting to the quick.

Agreed, she wanted to be a hero so badly, you could see it in her face. And when she learned that she was going to be a villain instead, that she was the product of evil scientists...you could see she wanted to get out of there. But the programming had already activated. And I was cheering for her to try to break through the programming, my heart broke when she stood up and said "i have awoken" in a robotic voice. Sam deserves none of it, she's a good person...and if she ever awakens she'll have to deal with the fallout of having hurt people. Damn. I want to see Sam metaphorically defeat Reign now, although I'm sure that will only happen in the finale.

why arew the writers deliberately ignoring DC comics and Legion of Super-Heroes history.

It's a good decision on their part. Why can't Kryptonians fly in outer space, as they could in the 1950s?

I am not saying I didn't like him. I did. But, the lying was very wrong. Poor Kara.

He should have told her initially that he has a wife and that he needs to save her and that the ship is failing, so their lives may be in danger--he is not giving any "future" secrets away by that. [There is no question that she would have helped him. Hell, she helped him when she was full of doubts about his intent and he had just tricked Winn into taking him to the ship behind her back (Winn! For once, take Kara's side.).]

Instead, he goes around her and then tries to use Winn. How is that excusable? I really don't understand this.

I mean, I am interested to see how Kara deals with all of this and how hers and Mon El's new relationship develops, and I hope they end up friends. But no. He is still not the ideal hero.

I don't mind if he isn't. He needn't be. It'd be great if the show and especially his fans acknowledged that though. (Instead, if they just used it to create unnecessary drama in order to forget it later, that would be sad.)

You are not! And I am sorry that you felt that. That I made you feel that. I should not have said that bit at the end. No excuses to offer. Everyone is entitled to a bias towards their favourite characters and defend them and see things from their POV. And everyone is even more entitled to give reasons irrespective of whether they are defending a character or not.

I do it all the time with Kara (and at times, Alex) even though their actions could be perceived as questionable--are some times questionable.

Again, I apologise that I did this. I look forward to the story just as anybody. And, I'd be more careful in the future.

Let's not let conflict arise over something like this shall we? Why is it always Mon-El?

Not the strongest episode of the season, but still very good. The season as a whole continues to impress me. I view this episode as a set-up for the remainder of the season. It succeeded in bringing Mon-El back, which I was happy to see. It will be interesting to see how the relationship among Kara, Mon-El, and Saturn Girl develops during the remainder of the season. As long as it doesn't become a "triangle" I'll be good with it. Preferably they all will just be friends and allies. I also liked the introduction of Reign. Again, it will be interesting to see how this develops. I'm thinking it will be by degrees, with "full Reign" happening sometime in mid-winter. And yes, I'm of the opinion that it will be a Jekyll and Hyde situation for that period, with Hyde winning out in the end.

This is one of the Weaker episodes of season three so far. Too many things go unexplained. What was the device Mon El stole from the DEO lockup? Better yet, how did he know it was there? How did Mon El return to the ship it was buried underground? Howcdid Kara herself get there, did she tunnel? The black of fight scenes in this season is getting really annoying. I get the feeling that the shows production budget has been cut, along with other narrow verse shows as well. Maybe that's why the writing has gotten better, with less money for fights and stunts you need to write better plots and dialogue.

I must say Reign’s transformation as an instant override was a bit disappointing

I gotta disagree. Think of the longer tragic story of Sam. She thought something wonderful was happening to her. She has this hopeful "see you soon" goodbye with her daughter, thinking something great was about to happen, only to be (seemingly) erased. Think of how horrified each individual person will be, especially Ruby, if/when they find out who Ruby is.

Plus, they've literally been building this for 5 episodes (she wasn't in "Far from the Tree" or "Midvale". That's plenty. I'm glad the change is done so we can get down to the action in episode 9.

Yeah she probably thought she was going to get to be like Supergirl and get to be a hero. I mean the thing about having the powers, finding out you're an alien, to be fair theres no way she could have realized that was going to happen. I think Reign being presented as an 'over ride' or a separate personality opens the door to maybe Sam coming back, maybe throughout the season where she tries to fight it.

At this point I really hope they can maybe find a way to separate the personalities somehow,because otherwise it seems that Sam might only break through at the end where she listens to an appeal by Ruby.

Much better season than 2, and we're still just 7 episodes in. Much more cohesive, as well.

I really like Mon-El. Perhaps having him and Kara moved on from their relationship will make for more fun scenes between the two of them. Each both have amazing comedic timing. And as an added BONUS... we don't have to hear/read shipdoms bickering.

P. S... I think he was being honest about why he kept the necklace. I think he realized and cherished the fact that Kara helped to lead him to the path of who he was meant to be--a hero.

I think she will get more, especially if Kara makes the mistake of trying to use her to get Sam to break through but thats the wrong stimuli.
