Supergirl and her many hidden powers.

I think Kara is portrayed as smart, but not a super intellect. I think this should be subtly explored on occassion. Such as Brainy over analyzing something he can't quite figure out and Kara solves it in passing. Kara fixing one of Lena's theoretical equations. Kara outsmarting Lex. I don't necessarily want Kara to be a know-it-all, but show flashes of brilliance without really trying every now and again would be fun.

They touched on her super intelligence in the episode Midvale where she complains about school saying how easy subjects like maths are.
Not sure if we've really seen a demonstration of that intelligence so far though.

She has moments, like when she figured out how to beat Mxy at his own game.

What separates Supergirl is her superpowers and her ability to use those superpowers for superheroic acts which save countless numbers of lives and are a pure joy to watch.

It would be cool if they introduced 1 new superpower in Season 6 that could be used more than once, maybe something like they did with the Thunderclap which if I recall correctly was first used in the Crisis on Earth X crossover and has been used a couple of other times since.

Same here, I will admit there have been some instances where seeing Supergirl and Superman saving someone has caused me to shed tears. Its just the kind of hope they inspire.

The thunderclap move is incredible, and I like that its not used often which makes it more spectacular to see. I was watching season 4 when she does it in the prison and I had to play back a few times.

But what does the Evil Empire get out of cruising around the galaxy blowing up planets from time to time? What's in it for them? I don't get it. I would expect them to be invading and taking over inhabited planets, so they would then become a part of the Evil Empire (and their resources could be exploited). Of course, they actually do that, too. It's the "blowing up planets" part I don't get.Also, what's the deal with Stormtrooper's armor? It seems to be completely useless! They put on all this armor, and then any human or alien with an "energy blaster" can kill them (or at least knock them out) with no apparent trouble at all? Again - I don't get it..

Perhaps its to demonstrates their psychopathic nature ? Stormtroopers ? Yeah it seems pretty silly. At least with the armor they make for more attractive action figures I guess.

My question is this: If Red Daughter had 'evolved' an extra power that Supergirl didn't have herself, and if Red Daughter's essence was then absorbed back into Supergirl's body after Red Daughter died, then shouldn't Supergirl have inherited Red Daughter's purple lightning power too?
This may be outside the realm of her already impressive list of many other powers, but I've wondered about it, and the maybe missed opportunity for Kara/Supergirl to evolve herself; so as long as the topic is how many powers Supergirl has, then why not add this to the discussion?
And, in concluding, I notice that her most important power isn't on any of the lists: Supergirl's greatest super-power of all is that she has Kara Danvers' heart.

Maybe Russian Kara devolved when she 'returned' to our Kara. It would be pretty cool if SG had that power. Although perhaps they wanted to make the other Kara a real threat which is why they gave her that ability.

Yeah all those powers are impressive but they would not be as impressive without the compassionate nature that SG has.

In season 3 Kara was going to do a Super spin/twist ? in order to reach the Legion ship.

She was stopped by J'onn because he didn't want her causing damage to the sidewalk. I echo Winn's sentiments from that scene when he said "I really wanted to see that"

Whether they would have shown that ability or were just teasing us I don't know, but that would be something I'd like to see in season 6.

We're on the same page there. That's exactly what I do in my fan fiction stories. The superfriends help out with their particular areas of expertise (except for Brainy, who is just "super-smart" in all subjects).

Not sure, if that's really super intelligence (like Brainy), or just that Krypton was more advanced technologically than the Earth is (so Kara would have learned things in grade school that Earth students don't get to until high school). In "The Adventures of Supergirl" comics series that Sterling Gates wrote, Kara talks about trying to explain gravitational waves to her middle-school science teacher. Of course, they weren't even discovered here on Earth until about three years ago!

I think the suit is just to provide oxygen. It could just be a scuba tank and mouthpiece (which I used in one of my stories).

That was the problem in the Silver Age Supergirl stories. She was so powerful and invulnerable that the writers had to use kryptonite, "red-sun radiation", or Mr. Mxyzptlk's "5th dimensional magic" in every story. This version of Supergirl seems to be more "damage resistant" than actually invulnerable. It seems that bullets can't penetrate her skin, but heat and electricity, being forms of energy, can. That's why she's vulnerable to Live Wire's lightning bolts and Reactron's hot gas blasts. Also, Kara's heat vision has its limitations, too. There have been times when it was overpowered by another alien's heat vison or by an alien "energy blaster" weapon of some sort.

Yeah I'm not sure that was super intelligence now that you mention it. I thought it was funny how they did it in the Helen Slater movie where she's not very good at math on Argo. But once she's on Earth at the school she just gives the answer to a ridiculously complex question like it was nothing to the amusement of the other girls.

I read a blog post where someone was saying how he felt Superman was losing his appeal and how he would rewrite him to be more attractive to contemporary comic book readers. The points mentioned included decreasing the intensity of his powers to the extent where kryptonite was not needed. Also making him more of a fighter as that's what many folks seem to like in a superhero these days. That could have been interesting if something like this had been done with this Kara.
Although I would really miss feats of her great strength and to be honest I'd like to see more as they can be quite meagre in this show as Kiwi has mentioned.

They seem to have done a fairly good job though of making this Kara more of a combatant and while she is very powerful she has various weak points as you mentioned. Another one that is perhaps taken for granted is that while she has incredible lung capacity she needs to breathe like everyone else and a few times we see villains exploit this.

Supergirl wouldn't be Supergirl without her hope and compassion. But, I do want to see more of the maid if might's "might".

I like her friends for emotional support but not so much on the action front (although I have enjoyed some Supergirl/Martian Manhunter team-ups). It's come to the point on this show now where her superhero friends are powerful enough that what is the point of Supergirl? and that shouldn't really happen on a show called Supergirl, the character that the majority of people watch the show for..

Yeah I'm totally with you there. I like her friends for the drama and the whole power of friendship concept. Also as I've mentioned on the Season 1 re-watch thread I would like to see SG doing the heavy lifting when it comes to confrontations, but with the superfriends helping out in other ways. Such as building a suit that allows her to go into space, or seeing an important event before it happens, or reading a villain's mind for crucial information and so on.

I have seen some odd defences for the superfriends diminishing SG's role as the lead character. If the other characters are going to be that prominent they should have called the series Supergirl and the Department of Extra normal Operations. A bit like She-Ra and the princesses of power.

One of the worst examples (funny you should mention Toyman) is the episode Schott through the heart in season 3. Where Winn is effectively the hero of the day with SG being captured and having to be rescued.

On the TV show, Kara's strength has varied greatly from one episode to another (apparently depending on the demands of the plot). In the first Toyman episode, she couldn't even get out of his vat of quicksand without freezing it first. In the Worlds' Finest episode (the crossover with the Flash),Kara was able to break the chains holding Cat Grant to a chair, but seemed to have some difficulty doing so. But then in the season one finale, she picked up and flew Fort Rozz into space all by herself. And in the second season, she was able to hold back the spaceship carrying Alex from going into space by herself. So there really doesn't seem to be any "rhyme or reason" to the extent of Kara's superstrength on the TV show. In my own fan fiction stories. I've said that she can pick up ten tons or so, and fly away while carrying it, but not for too long.

As far as Supergirl's hidden powers are concerned, there is something that didn't come up during Season Five, nor has it been mentioned by anyone here in the Forum.
During Supergirl's climactic battle with Red Daughter just outside Midvale in Episode 4.21, Supergirl mentioned that they were evenly matched. Red Daughter then said that she had 'evolved' and, seconds later, unleashed what looked like a purple lightning power against Supergirl.
Later, at Shelly Island, (in Episode 4.22) Red Daughter saved Supergirl's life at the cost of her own. As Supergirl held Red Daughter and she died, her body then turned into a kind of purple mist, which was then absorbed back into Supergirl's body, where she had originally come from when the Harun-el had split them apart the year before.
My question is this: If Red Daughter had 'evolved' an extra power that Supergirl didn't have herself, and if Red Daughter's essence was then absorbed back into Supergirl's body after Red Daughter died, then shouldn't Supergirl have inherited Red Daughter's purple lightning power too?

As for myself, I have a bit of a problem with inconsistency in powers, because it gets in the way of my "suspension of disbelief". If Kara can accomplish a certain feat in one episode, then she should be able to do the same thing in another one, also. Of course, "it's just a story", but I like things to at least add up and make sense (within the context of the "story universe".
I have the same problem with "Star Wars", too. I realize that the concept of the Evil Empire is based on the Third Reich. But Nazi Germany's motivations were clear. They were trying to dominate and take over all of Europe (at least), and turn all of their occupied lands into a part of the Third Reich, under the power of their "supreme leader".
