Phyllis Coates, who starred on the first season of The Adventures of Superman as Lois Lane, has died at age 96. That first season of the show was known for being film noir in its presentation. Also comic fans think Coates' role of Lois Lane fit more the attitude of the comic book character. Coates left in 1953 because of family trouble and a feeling the show was not going in the direction she felt was right.

She was the second actress to play the role on film, first taking it on in the 1951 film Superman and the Mole Men, which was split into a two-part season one finale "The Unknown People."

The first had been Noel Neill, who appeared in the two movie serials for Columbia with Kirk Alyn as Superman. Of course, she took over the role of Lois following Coates’ departure.

Coates made a cameo as Lois Lane’s mother (alongside Teri Hatcher) in an episode of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman in 1994 called "The House of Luthor".

Coates died of natural causes in Woodland Hills, California, according to The Hollywood Reporter (via her daughter Laura Press).

She was the last surviving member of The Adventures of Superman cast.

I wish Phyllis was one more chance on a superhero show...perhaps on Supergirl as...Grandma Danvers.
