I’m scared it will be politically charged and driven to channel the heavy anti-Russian bias of the Democrats.

For a normal show and a normal time this worry is quite unwarranted. But right now, much of American entertainment is reflection of the conflict between the Dems and the GOP. Not between left and right. Not between the marginalised and the privileged, but a duel between parties disguised as the former.

Of all of these, Supergirl goes out of its way in its unflinching support of the Democratic platform. The partisan angle is so obvious it is painful at times. This I don’t mean feminism, LGBTQ support etc.

Those are good, egalitarian values that today’s society sorely needs. It’s having being a democrat literally mentioned as a good thing, having titles like “She Persisted”, and immersion-destroying ploys like speaking of a “tyrant in the white house” despite clearly in the show the president is someone else.

The Dems claim to stand for social equality. That is well and good. But there’s another thing they vocally stand for. Unprecedented antagonism of Russia. If someone hates Russia, it’s a sure way to be their friend. Considering friendship or even diplomacy with the nation is considered treason.

Tldr:
I get Russia is not the perfect state. But there are many, like Saudi Arabia which do far worse in terms of human rights, yet hardly do the Americans even chastise them. There is no humanitarian cause behind the hatred of Russia, just geopolitical manuvring. And if Supergirl next season becomes a vehicle for that, it will be very hard to watch. (Just think, the show might even have fans from Russia)

Disclaimer: I’ve said some stuff about not liking the show being pro Democrats but that doesn’t mean I’m pro Republican. If this show had pro-Republican bias, I wouldn’t even watch it at all.

No use worrying about it until we see how they are going to do it. You've got 4 months before we really know what's going on.

It's already clear that this isn't just a Supergirl "Red Son" retelling. That's impossible, with the set up. I don't know that they'll go this route, but I'd go so far as to consider the other Kara as closer to "Dark Supergirl", from her Black Kryptonite split in comics. She's closer to that than "Red Son". Red Son Superman was RAISED in the Soviet Union. Dark Supergirl embodies everything dark about Supergirl. And with Kara, let's be real, it's likely she suppresses a lot of negative emotion.

If I were to venture a guess, Dark Supergirl will go for a power grab, rather than be a puppet of any sort of government and vilify Russia.

And I'll be honest about one political view. I'm liberal. I won't say "Democrat", because I don't blindly obey party. I go with my values. It just so happens those views often lean Democrat. That being said, I don' vilify Russia. I feel about them the way imagine many feel about the U.S. And that view is that, while I don't necessarily agree with those in power in Russia, I'm sure that administration does not accurately represent the values and morals of the masses.

I would hope that that's how others see the USA. Because while I have disagreed with the administrations in power at any given time, that doesn't mean all the people of the US are reprehensible.

Getting back to the show, I hoping the writers don't go that same route and don't purposely vilify Russia and it's people. Rather, I can see Dark Kara taking advantage and making her own campaign for power.

These are all just theories and hopes. We'll see what route they go in October and November.

I agree with your worries (I don't think the Russian thing is a democrat thing but an entire US thing that just stopped being so post 2016).

And... it is not just Russia anyways. Showing an entire nation/culture as bad would be unconscionable no matter the nation/culture.

However, I do think in this case, the showrunners just said that scene is a tribute to Red Son. That doesn't mean the entire storyline will follow that. And, it'd be very difficult to do that anyways.

I really wish Kara hadn't turned up in Siberia though.

Fed, your worries are legitimate and some of them are mine as an independent libertarian conservative. When Supergirl is non-political, it shines. When it goes political, it's reflective of the way Hollywood has operated, and it has turned a lot of people, especially in so-called "Flyover country" (mostly small town USA in the Midwest and South that east and west coast elites fly over totally not recognizing its existence) off.

SSAV, I think this will be ONE story in season 4, not THE story. And the technicality of things behind it could be expensive to start with.

Yeah the whole country seems to never quite have left the cold war.

I see no problems with it at all....and with Putin making the changes he is already putting in place legislation that could give him power past 2024. If people watch the news and read there should be no problem with the show doing this as one of the arcs.
