Clark Kent isn’t the only Kryptonian appearing in Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated superhero reboot “Superman: Legacy” as “House of the Dragon” actress Milly Alcock is in talks to play Supergirl in the film from writer-director James Gunn. Production gets underway in March.

The actress will then lead her own DC Studios movie called “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.”

Alcock broke out playing the young Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon.” The character was then taken over by Emma D’Arcy after a time jump. The Australian native also had a leading role on the Australian comedy series “Upright.”

According to DC heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, the “Supergirl” movie will be based on Tom King’s and Bilquis Evely‘s comic book of the same name, released in July of last year.

“This is a very different type of Supergirl,” Gunn said. “In our [film], we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from, you know, the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip-off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl and is much more hardcore. She’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

The official synopsis for King’s series reads as follows:

“Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame. Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.”

Supergirl was most recently seen on the small screen, in her own series on The CW. Played by Melissa Benoist, the super hung up her cape after six seasons on the network. On the big screen, “The Young and the Restless” star Sasha Calle played Kara Zor-El in “The Flash.”

Playwright and screenwriter Ana Nogueira has been hired to write the script for the “Supergirl” movie. Nogueira’s deal recently closed. No director is currently attached to the project. Gunn and Safran are producing.

Alcock joins a cast which includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel. Other cast include Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Addtionally, Skyler Gisondo joined the cast as Jimmy Olsen and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

Alcock is repped is repped by CAA, Shanahan Management, Entertainment 360 and Curtis Brown.

‘Supergirl’: New Woman Of Steel Is ‘House Of The Dragon’s Milly Alcock

House of the Dragon Australian actress Milly Alcock has landed the highly coveted role of Supergirl in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe.

Alcock played the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s first season of Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon. She is repped by CAA, Shanahan Management, Entertainment 360 and Curtis Brown.

Alcock beat out CODA actress Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly, the latter who voiced Supergirl in such DC animated movies Legion of Superheroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One.

There’s been buzz that the new Supergirl will appear in Gunn’s Superman Legacy, which is about to go before the cameras in Georgia, but that’s not 100%. What we know now is that she’ll appear in a DC-based project before starring in her solo feature, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Overall, it’s not confirmed where Supergirl will show up at this point. No director has been announced for that film yet. The project was first announced at DC’s studio press day a year ago and it’s based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series. Bilquis Evely is the illustrator on that comic.

Said Gunn at the time of that annoucement, “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Warner Bros.‘ Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is taking flight with House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. She will star in the feature as Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman.

Alcock screen-tested for DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran last week, along with Meg Donnelly, who was also in contention for the role. The character is expected to appear in a DC Studios project (or two) before her solo adventure, but it’s unclear if that project will be Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, which begins filming this spring, or another DC movie or show. Supergirl is moving like a speeding locomotive and it’s possible the feature could be shooting in the fall, if Warners soon finds a director. Ana Nogueira is penning the script.

Alcock broke out as the younger version of Rhaenyra Targaryen in season one of HBO’s House of the Dragon, a spinoff of Game of Thrones. Now, she enters the comic book realm, with the new feature partially inspired by the Tom King and Bilquis Evely miniseries of the same name.

“Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU,” Gunn wrote on social media Monday. “Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl,” adding that she embodied the character as envisioned by comic book writer King, comic book artist Evely and screenwriter Nogueira.

Gunn and Safran have said this is not the the Supergirl audiences are used to. She will stand in contrast to her hopeful cousin, Superman. As Gunn told reporters in late January 2023: “We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, raised on a rock, a chip off of Krypton, and who watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life and then come to Earth.”

In the comics, Supergirl dates back to’s Action Comics No. 252. Created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, the character is Superman’s cousin from Krypton. Faye Dunaway starred in the 1984 Supergirl film, while Melissa Benoist played the hero on the CW for six seasons from 2015-2021. Sasha Calle starred as the character in The Flash film.

Woman of Tomorrow is part of Chapter 1 in DC’s slate from Gunn and Safran. The slate also includes the Batman feature The Brave and the Bold and a TV series starring Viola Davis as her Suicide Squad character Amanda Waller.

Alcock is repped by CAA, Curtis Brown Group and Goodman Genow.

Chyler Leigh advice to new Supergirl actress Milly Alcock.

It’s a big role, so know your s***. Do your research, and just have fun. Everyone’s interpretation is going to be different, and you can’t listen to absolutely everybody out there. Just play it with as much heart and soul as you’ve got, and do your best.

It will be interesting to see where this all goes.

First off: Congratulations to Milly Alcock for securing the role. I hope the film does justice to this iteration of the character. As mentioned already in various outlets, it will be based on the DC version Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and will be a darker take than the Flash film version or the most recent CBS/CW incarnation.

Secondly: What is now needed is a director and for the remaining pieces / logistics to fall into place. Provided the current Superman project doesn't flop and affect this planned production in any adverse way (i.e. poor fan and critic reception to the Superman project or potential actor controversies), this should be a very welcome addition to the superhero universe.

Only time will tell. :)

OK, so maybe Melissa Benoist won't be the first former Last Daughter of Krypton/Argo to notice Milly Alcock's selection. None other than the FIRST Supergirl Helen Slater, took to Instagram and said...

“Congratulations to the luminous Milly Alcock, the next Supergirl! DC universe awaits you! You will be AMAZING!!”

Supergirl has been trending on "X" formerly Twitter. Perhaps not since Sasha Calle was cast in The Flash film. Wonder if there is anything to be said from Melissa Benoist on the newest woman to don the "S?"

Melissa Benoist isn’t on “X” formerly Twitter. The account @melissabenoist is fake, it has the name elena attached to it and the birthday says September 28. If asked I’m confident Melissa will be just as welcoming to Milly Alcock as she was to Sasha Calle.
Hope, Help and Compassion for all

If The Girls On The Bus does premiere in Max in March as was reported. I'm sure someone in the press will be asking her about it while she's promoting her show. Wouldn't surprise me if she says something before that either.
