Melissa Benoist Renews Overall Deal With Warner Bros. TV As She Officially Boards ‘The Girls On The Bus’

By Peter White

Melissa Benoist and her production banner Three Things Productions has renewed its overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group as the former Supergirl star officially joins HBO Max series The Girls on the Bus.

Deadline revealed in February that Benoist was in talks to reunite with Berlanti Productions for the political campaign drama series.

It’s confirmed that she will star as Sadie McCarthy, a journalist who romanticizes Tim Crouse’s Boys on the Bus book and who scrapped her whole life for her own shot at covering a presidential campaign for the paper of record.

Sadie hits the trail and eventually bonds with three female competitors. Despite their differences, the women become a found family with a front-row seat to the greatest soap opera in town: the battle for the White House.

The series comes from executive producers and writers Amy Chozick and Julie Plec, inspired by a chapter in Chozick’s book Chasing Hillary. Benoist will serve as a producer on the series, which is exec produced by showrunner Rina Mimoun, Berlanti and Sarah Schechter.

Benoist’s new overall deal comes just over a year after she signed her first overall deal with the studio. She launched Three Things Productions with the WB pact in February 2021, coming off the back of six seasons of the superhero series.

The deal will see her and Sahar Kashi, VP Development, continue to develop and produce dramas, comedies and limited series for Warner Bros Discovery’s HBO Max, rival streamers, cable and broadcast networks.

Benoist is represented by UTA, Anonymous Content and Frankfurt Kurnit

Melissa Benoist to Star in HBO Max's The Girls on the Bus, Inspired by Memoir About Hillary Clinton Campaign Trail

By Andy Swift / June 28 2022,

Melissa Benoist has now officially set her first series-regular TV role since hanging up her cape last year.

The actress formerly known as Kara Danvers is now confirmed to star in HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television’s upcoming drama The Girls on the Bus, reuniting her with Supergirl executive producer Greg Berlanti. The series is inspired by a chapter in Amy Chozick’s 2018 novel Chasing Hillary, which was based on the author’s time covering Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign as a political reporter.

Benoist will play Sadie McCarthy, “a journalist who romanticizes the original ‘Boys on the Bus’ and who scrapped her whole life for her own shot at covering a presidential campaign for the paper of record. Sadie hits the trail and eventually bonds with three female competitors,” per the official logline. “Despite their differences, these women become a found family with a front-row seat to the greatest soap opera in town: the battle for the White House.”

The series was developed by Chozick and Julie Plec, both of whom will executive-produce alongside showrunner Rina Mimoun, as well as Berlanti and Sarah Schechter for Berlanti Productions.

Warner Bros. Television Group has also renewed its overall deal with Benoist and her production company, Three Things Productions. Under the exclusive, multi-year agreement, Benoist and Three Things — including Sahar Kashi, Vice President of Development — “will continue to develop and produce new television dramas, comedies, limited series and more for Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO Max, as well as external streaming services, cable and the broadcast networks.”

The Girls on the Bus has traveled a winding road to get on the air: It was first ordered by Netflix in 2019, then quietly dropped and picked back up by The CW. HBO Max handed it a straight-to-series order in February of this year.

After having a very bad day my day ends with glad tidings. Melissa's career is rolling along and Supergirl is now in the rear view mirror. My hope is that the entire cast of Supergirl finds much success except for 2. ;) Looks like HBO MAX TV just got another subscriber.

Good news I’ll look forward to Girls on the Bus. Melissa as producer good for her.

Muckle I’m pretty sure you won’t find this new show to your liking as you’ve previously said you didn’t like the “politics” in Supergirl. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t wish all the cast success. What effect would their success or not have on your life. Why wish anyone’s career not be successful especially someone who you don’t know and who’s success has no effect on you or yours. My grandma would say it’s putting bad energy out in the universe which will come back to three times.

Does this leave the door open for Melissa to...you know?

As for this new project of hers...it's a hard pass for me. Sounds like more of the usual woke stuff from Hollywood.

Yes, I did not like the one sided politics on Supergirl but this show is about politics so I'm on board because I've been following politics most of my life. I think Melissa will bring her stuff to this starring role and make it enjoyable for all. And not wishing success for 2 cast members was a joke.;)

Some updates for Girls on the Bus. Melissa’s costars will be Natasha Behnam (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), and Christina Elmore (The Last Ship) with a fourth roll yet to be cast. The main character in the series (played by Benoist) is deeply affected by the famous non-fiction book "The Boys on the Bus" from Tim Crouse, a memoir in which he chronicled what it was like to cover the 1972 presidential election on the road with other journalists. story, and decides to do something similar with her life. The series was inspired by a chapter from writer and executive producer Amy Chozick's book, "Chasing Hillary." In addition to Berlanti, Plec, and Chozick, Sarah Schechter and David Madden will executive produce the series. Benoist will produce, and Rina Mimoun will serve as showrunner.

It feels like Warner Bros./Discovery is doing a fire sale.I'm sure many heard the news from the last day or so that the DCEU Batgirl film starring Leslie Grace(Batgirl),Michael Keaton(Batman),Brendan Fraser(main villain Firefly) and J.K. Simmons(Commissione Gordon),a film that has finished filming and was in post production has been scrapped and will never be released. And it was done for a unique tax write-off.Industry insiders have said this move is unprecedented.

But there is another element to all this as well. There is a big WB investors day call today and it's rumored that WB/D is basically scrapping HBO Max as we know it.HBO will be folded into Discovery + as a app and they are getting rid of scripted shows for cheaper unscripted projects.

HBO Max Will Reportedly Stop Making Scripted TV Shows

According to a new report, HBO Max will cease operations on its scripted TV division and lay off a significant number of development staff.

BY RYAN NORTHRUP

https://static1.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Peacemaker-HBO-Max-logo.jpg

With the Discovery+ integration looming, HBO Max is reportedly planning to no longer make scripted TV shows moving forward. In addition to hosting dozens of Warner Bros. films, the HBO Max streaming service also features troves of original movies and shows, dubbed "Max Originals." These Max Originals are distinct from the mainline HBO brand and channel, which is known for hits like Game of Thrones, Barry, and Euphoria, and includes titles like Tokyo Vice, Peacemaker, and Our Flag Means Death.

Since the Warner Bros. Discovery merger last year, plans were put in motion to merge the streaming services of HBO Max and Discovery+. For months, it was unclear what this integration would look like but, under the new leadership of CEO David Zaslav, the upcoming merger is starting to incur some casualties in the form of HBO Max Original content. The biggest casualty thus far is Batgirl, which was slated to star Leslie Grace and feature Brendan Fraser as the villain, but the project was recently shelved after reportedly poor test screenings. Earlier today, it was also revealed that a number of HBO Max Originals were quietly removed from the platform as part of a larger tax write-off, leading many to question what the future holds for a number of other properties on the streamer.

Now, however, a new report from The Wrap suggests that HBO Max will be eliminating its scripted TV show division entirely and that it will be absorbed into HBO. The report claims that 70% of the HBO Max development team will be laid off, with HBO supposedly poised to offer fewer scripted shows overall. Check out a comment below from a source featured in The Wrap's report:

"All I know is they're folding HBO Max into HBO. Sounds like they're not doing HBO Max scripted shows anymore with HBO taking over, so less scripted shows overall."

While HBO Max may be ceasing operations on scripted shows, it's important to note that this doesn't necessarily mean that all existing Max Original scripted series will all be getting the axe. Peacemaker creator James Gunn, for example, recently confirmed that his show is safe amidst the general shakeups at HBO Max. What it does mean, however, is that if any shows do end up surviving the merger, they will likely no longer be Max Originals but instead absorbed into the mainline HBO brand to become akin to the likes of House of the Dragon or Euphoria.

It remains to be seen what additional titles will be canceled or removed from the streamer with the integration of Discovery+ into HBO Max, but consumers are evidently experiencing how expendable content on streaming platforms can be. The decisions seem to ultimately be tied to crafting a platform that isn't confusing to new subscribers in terms of branding and content offerings, but many existing HBO Max users (and fans of shows like Our Flag Means Death, And Just Like That..., Hacks, and Minx) are now left wondering whether their favorite shows and movies will still exist in a few weeks' time.

If this plays out, what does it mean for Melissa's show?Is it safe, does it go to HBO proper or is it scrapped?

While nothing related to HBO Max seems to be safe “Girls on the Bus” may have one thing going for it. From the description it seems like a limited series rather than multi-season. If I had to give an analogy it would be “Queens Gambit” certainly viewers would’ve tuned in for more but the EPs chose to leave things where the book did. The Flight Attendant did one more season after the book and then the EPs said the story was done. Being a limited series might be what saves Girls on the Bus” we’ll have to wait and see.

Zaslav is commenting on rumors of shutdown of scripted programming on HBO Max --- doesn't sound like they are stopping with that, any time soon.

Hopefully, that's good sign for this. Some other stuff out of the invester call does concern me but this specifically may be a good sign for The Girls On The Bus.

TVLine Items: Scott Foley Joins Benoist Series

By Vlada Gelman / August 23 2022,

https://tvline.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/scott-foley-the-girls-on-the-bus.jpg

Scott Foley is catching a ride with The Girls on the Bus.

The Scandal vet has joined Melissa Benoist (Supergirl) in the aforementioned HBO Max series, which chronicles four female journalists who follow every move of a parade of flawed presidential candidates, while finding friendship, love, and scandal along the way. The comedic drama is inspired by a chapter in Amy Chozick’s 2018 novel Chasing Hillary, which was based on the author’s time covering Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign as a political reporter.

Foley will recur as a little-known mayor from Kansas who has joined the presidential race.

Chozick and Julie Plec developed the series and will executive-produce alongside showrunner Rina Mimoun, as well as Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter for Berlanti Productions.

More casting news is a strong indicator that “Girls on the Bus” is moving forward. From what I’ve been reading HBO Max isn’t stopping all scripted content. They’re getting out of the kids/family entertainment business and are keeping a tight reign on DC content. The new management also wants to release movies in theaters instead of making them strictly as streaming content. Since none of that applies to “Girls on the Bus” I think it should be ok.

The article also says Tala Ashe who played Zari Tomaz and Zari Tarazi on LoT will have a reoccurring role. I didn’t watch LoT so I don’t know all or even most of the actors names but someone on a different site pointed it out.

Thank for posting Comic Fan! I think it will help me that Sadie and Kara look different. Sometimes when an actor plays a part for a long time it takes some adjustment seeing them play a new character. It does seem Sadie will share Melissa’s smile with Kara and I wouldn’t want that any other way.

Glad to see they’re having fun on the set. I think it was Kevin Smith that said the Supergirl set was great because Melissa as number one on the call sheet set the tone.
