“Unfortunately, I don’t know if we’ll get them forever, because I know the comic books,” he says. I’m not saying they can’t be together, but… yeah, they can’t be together. But I’m hoping we get the best of both worlds: We’ll watch the dance as we lead them towards a relationship, then deal with them when they can’t be together — if they end up playing things out like they do in the comics. The good news is that they can take liberties on the show. They’re not beholden to particular storylines.”

A bit vague there as to whether he means it won't happen or it won't happen if they stick to the comics. Thoughts?

Think he's saying it won't happen if they stick to the comics.

For those of you unfamiliar with Mon-El from comics (yes, I'm a comics nerd) - he doesn't hang around (don't want to spoil the reason why).

The TV version, however, is already a bit different - has a big "secret" , might be a prince, being chased by aliens, etc. So maybe they won't go that route.

I actually think sticking to comics would be a very dramatic development and would be pretty great to see onscreen (though I do like them together now. dilemma!)
