Happy 29th Birthday Melissa!! I hope you had a Super Day (besides any filming you may have done).

This for me does raise an interesting issue of where to set the boundaries.

Specifically, for Supergirl, I watched the series originally on recommendation about MB. I love the show (my favourite on TV) for many reasons, but MB is an important one. In my view some of the shakier episodes have remained watchable in part because of her performance. So yes a big, big fan of Melissa as Supergirl. (From snippets I have seen of her in other roles, she looks to be an excellent actress all round.)

But I do find the obsession of some with celebrities worrisome, particularly when this spills over in their private lives. MB and others are absolutely entitled to a private life, and what they do as themselves, what they personally believe in, their political leanings should not be mixed up with the part they play on screen.

This site does though, rightly in my view, report on some of Melissa’s outside life. Her admission that she has suffered with depression is one example (she obviously positively wanted that spread around). Her love of her dogs is something else that appears from her private life. Her roles outside Supergirl are often showcased. I might be wrong, but there’s more emphasis on MB than the other excellent members of the cast, but she is the star of the show and naturally its focal point.

The trick is where to draw the line. I myself think Eric and Kelsey have been brilliant at that.

Eric has a point though, I do hold reservations about some people blending fandom of the show with fandom of the cast (not talking about anyone here)

Kelsey and I discussed this yesterday, our feeling was that we cover Supergirl (the show) not Melissa Benoist or any other specific cast members. While we did wish her a happy birthday on Twitter yesterday, her birthday was not "Supergirl" news, which is why we didn't say anything about it, nor would we for Chyler, Katie, Chris, David, Mehcad or any other.

I dont think sending happy bday wishes to the lead of the show you cover is over the top. its not news about her private life, its just a happy bday. Also this site might have members that dont use social media, least they could feel like they took part via this site.

You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun, Kal. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.

Correct. There were many birthday wishes on Twitter. Just felt it should be mentioned here on one of her fans favorite sites.

Great idea. Perhaps more effective if posted on Twitter, I doubt she comes to this site
