First; I have been taking a step back for a little bit to allow season four to wash over me. Additionally, a season’s end is a celebration and ... a bit of a break. So, there is a lot coming from the admin team soon, but tonight, I (Eric) want to convey a sentiment about Lex Luthor.

Anne Hathaway, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale and so many others have been accused as “the worst casting choices possible” for the characters they played. Yet, in 2019, their performances are hailed as definitive characters depictions in comic lore.

Tonight, on a whim, I want to praise and raise up Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor because, as a viewer, I loved him and was betrayed by him just as Lena was and at the exact same time she was.

To the absolute credit of the show runners, they had an idea of Lex that was different than we’ve ever seen. Bringing in Jon Cryer was bringing an absolute lovable person and twisting him into darkness. I think we all can reflect on that choice as a magnificent casting gamble that redefined a character!

Melissa’s Red Daughter was perfect too. She held us in conviction that (a)Lex was a guiding force and Cryer’s performance was elevated because of it. Basically two master actors brought forth a Shakespereian effort that we let our jaws drop with.

In a season that made a gamble on a linchpin, you couldn’t have done better than Jon Cryer. Superman, Supergirl, and all other enemies against Lex were brought into play and the only thing that brought him down was a missed-placed trust in the nurture version of Kara Zor-El.

I am not yet ready to weigh in on season 4 as a whole but I think I can walk away now with a definitive performance of what Lex Luthor can really be!

Here’s an interview with Jon, he really seems like a nice guy. He talks about how he got the part and how he wouldn’t have been his first choice to play Lex but when the EPs explained what they had in mind he got it. He broke with a personal policy and took the part without reading the script.

That’s a great video! I listened to him on “Inside You” with Michael Rosenbaum and that was a great interview! Never watched two and a half men but the stories he told from Hollywood were so genuine and kind. It actually made me surprised when he sang in the finale because he has always had a difficulty with it (medical reasons).

I agree that at times the odd choice to play an iconic comic book character can be brilliant. I truly enjoyed Jon Cryer’s performance and take on Lex Luthor. Assuming the Monitor resurrected him, I’d very much enjoy seeing him portray Lex again.

I think another take away from this casting is that perhaps the casting directors and TPTB should take more calculated risks in casting actors who may appear outside of the mainstream choice. Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor made a significant contribution to Season 4.

I'll agree that casting Jon as Lex was a very wise move by the PTB. Like casting Melissa in the lead role, or having Chyler and David as the lead secondary characters, he does enhance the show and his character a great deal. That, plus the fact that he's a legacy casting (having appeared in the 1987 Superman IV film) probably made the decision to have him do a turn as Lex a no-brainer choice.

I thought I’d put this in the Jon Cryer thread. Jon shared the inscription on his Christmas card from Katie on Twitter

It said “To my very evil brother Rot in Hell hate you forever...”

Some of the cast commented and I’d bet there’s more he didn’t share. This cast seems to genuinely enjoy each other’s company and having a good time at work.
