The idea of a season villain is a tried and tested approach on all other DC shows that works well and binds the show with a purpose. The lack of direction from the last season suffers not in the least because they started off touting Cadmus as the big bad and switched the end-game to Daxamites.

When Reign was announced I was very excited because she would likely be the undisputed main villain of the season. Is Psi supposed to be Cadmus all over again?

Thanks for shedding a more light on certain aspects, Brierrose. As long as the new season is coherent is all.

I hope they play Psi the way we've seen her in recent comics: she's not really a bad person, but her power tends to overwhelm her at times. Supergirl has been known to "defeat" her not with punches, but with hugs.

Since I know you hold up Flash as an example of season villain I'll use it as a example. I like Flash so I'm not trying to put that show down. We are seeing Reign right away compared to Savatar who didn't appear until the end of S3E6, before that we thought Alchemy would be the main villain. Personally I thought Savatar dragged on too long, the team should have figured it out by the second time he said "I am the future Flash" and found a way to stop him. Comic books tend to do mini arcs imagine if Superman chased Lex Luthor for 22 straight issues, that would get boring. I believe the rival comic book companies' TV shows tend to use the mini arc format. I think the best way to do villains is a mix of mini arcs, main villain, and one and done foes. That also keeps things from getting too dark, which I thought was happening on Flash last season.

Supergirl S1E13 where Alex kills Astra was the last of the original episode order from CBS. Production had shut down when CBS ordered seven more episodes. Laura Benanti had made a commitment to a show on Broadway that was known when she started so Astra had to die but that episode could have been a season or even series finale. The last seven episodes were written and filmed very quickly. Supergirl season two I do think had some actor availability issues as in, cool Terri Hatcher became available lets write her as the final villain.

I think every hero needs one or two persistent thorn in their sides villains as their nemesis, Flash has Grod, Supergirl has Lillian Luthor, and sorta Livewire and Roulette. I think Cadmus has great potential to tie multiple seasons of the show together.

By signing Odette Annable as a regular the producers have ensured her availability for the whole season. She might not be in every episode but her contract likely says she can't look for other work and must be available. Because of this you'll likely get your wish of one villain being around from the beginning to the end but at the same time it shouldn't be all Reign all the time. I am excited for Psi, from my research she really messes with Kara's head which will give Melissa some good acting meat. Since Yael Grobglas is on another CW show the network has some control over her schedule so Psi can pop up when it fits the story not when the actor is available. With Reign and Psi we are getting Supergirl only villains so no complaints from the internet haters saying the show is recycling Superman villains.

So let the season three forecast be for Reign with a little Psi messing with everyone's minds and a sprinkling of Cadmus.
Hope, Help and Compassion for all

I get villain of the week, I mean a significant villain that is presented as the main challenge but then is switched out half-way. Like Astra and Cadmus

I think she will be a villain of the week, possibly a recurring villain like Livewire or Roulette.

I'm pretty sure she's just a villain-of-the-week. The actress is a regular on another series that shoots in LA so it'll be difficult to be more than that.

I not sure how exactly they will be using Psi, 1 episode, 2 epiosodes, etc.but the 2nd episode has wrapped and the actress has left Vancouver.

all the cwdc shows have a villain of the week. there are big episodes where the big bad is the episode focus, but every episode has a villain of the week.

I think no one can answer that until we actually see the show....

I don't think that any villain is big enough that they can be the lead villain for every single episode. They would just burn on on things for them to do and ways for the characters to fight. That's why you need villains of the week and secondary villains.

Season 1 had Astra as the main villain, but they also had villains of the week and Maxwell Lord, so I don't see what the problem is.

I think another villain like Roulette with a mini arc would be pretty neat.

As long as they still show Reign doing stuff on the sidelines I don't see the big problem.

IMO, the problem has never been too many villains running around, it has been the writing of those villains and the fact that their scope of the danger they bring to earth and the fight they bring to Supergirl has just never been big enough. I think we will have that with Reign, so secondary villains along the way will take nothing away from Reign, and can bring in some great smaller story arcs.
