In my fan fiction stories, I've made the Mexican drug cartels one of the Big Bads.for the Supergirl Team. I'm kind of wondering why the show hasn't also brought them into the picture (at least not yet). After all, those drug lords are standard TV and movie bad guys straight out of Central Casting! (NCIS Los Angeles, anyone?) You would think that Kara & Company would be a major thorn in the side of the cartels, and that they would certainly be willing to team up with - and bankroll - the (evil) Luthors, Metallo, Toyman or anyone else who would promise to put Kara out of commission for a while. And those drug guys have "big bucks", too, so they could afford the latest high-tech gizmos to confound and confuse Kara with. I can certainly picture Winn going up against bad-guy Russian hackers hired by the cartels!

Kara has probably cleaned them up already, or they were smart enough to get out of town. Kara keeps her city clean and tidy, unlike the dump that Oliver runs down in Star City.
Imra: "What about Tommy and Gina? 'You live for the fight when it's all that you've got!'"

Mon El: "Bon Jovi."

Imra: "Or was that all a lie?"

Mon El: "No. He speaks the truth."

Going hard into real-life drug issues has only been done on the "gritter" straight out "vigilante" show Arrow on the CW. And even then, they used a fictional drug: Vertigo.

I don't think the somewhat more "four color", lighter shows like Supergirl and Flash are going "Scarface" on us.

I think that they're walking along the fringe of addressing real-life substance abuse issues already by depicting Alex as someone who seems to be possibly on the cusp of abusing alcohol. If they really wanted to go into that territory, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch.

But, I also wouldn't mind them having a few episodes, or even a season plot with the main villain being someone who is a human, or a group of humans such as a drug cartel of some type, that pose a real world threat to society. All of the main human antagonists that Supergirl has had so far have either been linked to the corporate world or have been individuals who are well-respected and established within the community. It would be interesting to see the fall out and struggle to save society from some invasive substance that is introduced, perhaps to the alien community, that causes an addiction or erratic behavior in that individual.

I think that having the show take on serious real life issues and treat them as serious topics gives the show more depth and validity.

No, I didn't mean like real-life drug issues. But I think you can use a lighter touch and make the drug cartel guys into more "cartoonish" villains (like I've done in my fan fiction Supergirl stories). You don't have to mention the darker side of drugs and addiction, but just make the cartel guys into more generic bad guys. In other words, more "Boris & Natasha" (from the Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons) than "Scarface". Anyway, it's just an idea - and one that I believe has worked in my own writing efforts...
