US Thanksgiving is next Thursday. It arrives later in the month than usual this year. ?

Your shopping tips are well taken. I bunker down on Black Friday, at least when I'm not working that day!

Gee, I though it fell on the third Thursday of November. Moveable date this year, I guess. Nonetheless, the Black Friday advice still remains. Absolute chaos in the shops.

When I last visited the U.S. in 2014, it fell over the Thanksgiving/Black Friday period (was in Miami to join a cruise), made it a point NOT to be out in the crowds that day.

A little history about the date of Thanksgiving. It was originally established as the last Thursday of November by Abraham Lincoln, and remained so until Franklin Roosevelt changed it during the Great Depression to the 4th Thursday of November, as a means of extending the holiday shopping season to stimulate the economy. It has remained so ever since. This year it is the 28th. It can be as late as the 29th or as early as the 22nd, depending on the calendar.

BTW, that's good advice to avoid the Black Friday rat-race at the malls and do your shopping online. Those abroad may not know what Black Friday means. The Friday after Thanksgiving is also a holiday for many in the US, and is the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. Retailers named it Black Friday because it often was the day when their annual sales went into the "black"; in other words they were guaranteed a profitable year.

Just to be clear for some from abroad, the tradition of Thanksgiving goes back much farther than Lincoln, as it originated with settlers in Massachusetts in 1621, who were celebrating their first harvest (i.e., survival) in America. It continued off and on as an unofficial celebration until Lincoln made it a national holiday in 1863, partly in gratitude for the Union victory in the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War.
