Eric brought this comic fact up, but I wanted to back him up on it.

I am as ignorant as they come when it comes to comic stuff, but I used to be an astronomy freak so was this actually interested me.

"I've lost where I saw this so I can't quote it but I think someone was asking what a Blue Sun would do in the comics and if I'm not mistaken, Blue Suns actually give Kryptonians even more power to the point its hard for them to control the easiest of tasks for fear of destroying things.

Any comic aficionados out there have info?"

That was so very, very disappointing to me. I have wanted for ages for an episode where Kara goes to a blue sun and becomes so unexpectedly powerful that she has difficulty controlling her powers. It would be, for us, to see a version of her unseen years on Earth when she learned to control her powers.

I really hate that they took that away. If all they wanted was to have Kara Powerless, they could have just had Fort Rozz circle a read dwarf, as they are by far, the most common star in the universe. It also makes sense. The fact that Blue stars produces enormous amts of energy compared to a yellow star and more massive.

If Krytonians gets their energy from solar radiation, then they would be absorbing massive amts of energy from a blue star.

They should have shelved this for future use instead for ruining astrophysics.

The sun has a surface temperature of 5,500 K, typical for a yellow star. Red stars are cooler than the sun, with surface temperatures of 3,500 K for a bright red star and 2,500 K for a dark red star. The hottest stars are blue, with their surface temperatures falling anywhere between 10,000 K and 50,000 K.

Also there is this.

I know the show doesn't and shouldn't always follow the comics, but this is a rule that makes sense within the realm of scifi. And if little O' me knows this stuff, professionally paid writers should make the effort to do basic research that they write about. I try my best to ignore all things scientific from the show, but sometimes, it's just too much to ignore from professional script writers.

You're absolutely correct and it is frustrating. Frankly a lot of the past episode seemed forced, almost as if they gathered a few plot points and tried to connect them best they could rather than develop a good story.
It's worth mentioning that episodes were we see a more destructive or reckless Kara such as 1x16 "Falling" and the Crisis On Earth-X event (döppleganger but still) have shown to be fan favorites, so an episode where we could see a Blue Sun Kara has more potential than what it turned out to be. It also could have supported the theme of Kara trying to lose her humanity or be fearless, and they could have tried to use the Blue Sun in later episodes to attempt to fight Reign. But this is all just theorizing.
In any case, the Supergirl version of the Blue Sun did reveal to viewers that Reign is not Kryptonian (prompting a sarcastic gasp from anyone who's read comics with the Worldkillers), but there was definitely wasted potential there.

I had absolutely no idea what kind of effect a blue sun would have on Supergirl but, the comment about it limiting her powers did make me think that it was odd that both a red and blue star would have the same effect. It didn't appear to me that the purpose of making it a blue sun was for anything other than to provide a reason that she wouldn't have her powers and would need to get additional support. So, it seems as though they could have easily made it a red sun and that would have solved any conflict.

But, I wouldn't suppose that the concept of having Supergirl becoming overwhelmingly powerful has to be lost just because they used a blue sun in this way. They could feasibly come up with some other device, sun or what have you, that creates the same effect. So, stay positive Ink Slinger, your hopes for that version of Supergirl could still materialize!
