Tonight's new episode of Supergirl was the tale of two life changing events. Centering around fathers, both Maggie and J'onn would experience similar yet vastly different outcomes in their stories. Going into the evening, we knew that Supergirl would focus on J'onn's trip to Mars accompanied by Kara, as well as Maggie and Alex's wedding shower featuring Maggie's estranged father played by Carlos Bernard. It was charged with emotion and great care was given to tell a compelling story. In the end, this episode might have had some of the most emotional and impactful moments on TV as well as possibly Supergirl's funniest moment to-date. Specifics on those and other moments that stood out to us below:
- Sisters Talking Together: Going into this episode, we weren't sure if Kara would be able to attend the wedding shower since J'onn needed her help on Mars. That said, the writers were able to get us a wonderful sisters' brief in the beginning of the episode that featured some very heartwarming moments.
- J'onn Approaches the Danvers Sisters: Picking up right where last episode left off, J'onn heads to Kara's apartment to talk with Kara and Alex about what he heard from M'gann. We found this to be especially powerful as J'onn really has accepted the girls as family and when he needs help and needs to lean on someone, he turns to them for help and advice. Alex's willingness to send Kara with him and excuse them both from her shower only shows how much they are like family and do what is best for each other.
- Maggie, Alex and Eliza Prep for Party: Eliza does such a mom thing and asks some probing questions about Maggie. Of course, as soon as she sees that it makes Maggie uncomfortable, she pulls back. Maggie, however, wants to share more with her future mother-in-law and tells us more about her coming- out story and how she was abandoned on the side of the road at the young age of 14. It was an incredibly well done scene and Floriana crushed it!
- Kara and J'onn Arrive on Mars: J'onn's spaceship is possibly the coolest spaceship we've ever seen outside the USS. Defiant maybe (any DS9 fans?). Anyway, when the two arrived on Mars, they were met with M'gann and her resistance crew immediately. Learning that there is a complex Martian religion and that J'onn isn't the last Martian hits us, the audience, pretty hard. But hearing his dad is alive after two hundred years nearly crushes J'onn. Kara might have taken a bit of a backseat in this episode, but her wingman style was pretty freaking awesome!
- Maggie Invites Her Parents to the Shower: I don't think I am qualified to comment on this aside from the fact that I think we all crave our parents' approval in life. As long as your parents are worthy of it, we are always seeking that kind of acceptance. At Alex's suggestion, after some trepidation, Maggie makes the call.
- M'yrnn Rejects J'onn As Real: After two hundred years of torture and captivity, it's not easy for M'yrnn to accept that J'onn, his son, is actually real. M'yrnn, being a priest of the Green Martian religion, centers himself and protects his mind, but it's that protection that makes it impossible for him to know the truth about J'onn.
- The Shower Failure: After some attempt on Maggie's father's part to go to the bridal shower, it's too much for him to see her kiss Alex and he runs out of the room. The following scene on the sidewalk has to be one of the more powerful and emotional scenes of this season. Oscar's reaction and mentality to Maggie's sexuality is just ridiculous. The shock and pain that Maggie takes from Oscar is terrible, but as for the acting, it was incredible.
- J'onn, M'yrnn and Kara See J'onn's Memory: Here was another powerful emotional scene. Carl Lumby (who played M'yrnn as well aa voiced J'onn J'onzz in the Justice League animated series) was absolutely incredible! His reaction, along with how David portrayed the father and son relationship, was incredible! While Maggie and her father couldn't be further apart, J'onn and M'yrnn are kindred spirits. We were fighting tears seeing J'onn's kids actually keeping a secret.
- Hit Me Baby One More Time: This was probably the funniest moment we've seen on Supergirl so far. Kara is driving a 1950's Chevrolet on Mars listening to a 1990's Britney Spears song asking for directions back to Earth before engaging the White Martians! Even writing this now I am chuckling about it! I think this might be the funniest moment on Supergirl so far, even more so than Kara and the ice cream and Winn's reaction to Superman.
- Maggie is Freed From Her Father: The only way to live is to be comfortable in your own skin and that might be what Maggie finally realized when she had her final confrontation with her father. He was never worthy of her affections or attention. Now that she made the attempt to open her life to him and he still couldn't accept it, she can be free from him and know that she has found acceptance in herself and is comfortable in her own skin. While this scene was extremely emotional and heartbreaking to watch, it was a testament to Floriana and Carlos' acting. Floriana really had an incredible episode this episode!
Final wrap up moments, Kara, J'onn and M'yrnn return to Earth together and Kara welcomes M'yrnn to Earth. Notably for us, we felt that Kara's flight scene out of that parking lot was possibly one of the best, the transition from actor "hump" to CGI was really well done. Same to be said for the CGI on the Martians this time! Again, the issue of kids is brought up between Maggie and Alex as well. All in all, it was an incredible episode and we think that it's one of our all-time favorites! Earth gained a new Green Martian and Maggie finally freed herself from her awful family. I had to go back and bold that last sentence from VeeJer, it just holds so much weight imo. This network thrives on relationship drama. But if, IF, they create a love triangle with a (possibly) married couple and Kara that's a whole new low for them. I'm sincerely hoping they don't.
All excellent thoughts!
I agree with both of these thoughts. It seems like they might be going to bring Kara out of her (for lack of a better word) depression and have her accept Mon-El's loss right before he is back.
If she has come to terms with him being gone and then when he does show back up and (we assume) not available so therefore not in a position to get back together with her that would leave it up to Kara to persue him and if he is (again we assume) unavailable I just cant see her doing that.
Plus that is the kind of relationship drama that the CW seems to go for.
I agree. I like Lena in the storyline and I do like what she adds to the show.
Also, if the spoilers are true then Monel won’t be available so that would also be a factor.
Next week looks very good too with a creepy Cult Leader. Hopefully no Lena there too.
I can agree with this....this was my least favorite of the first 3 episodes, but I have to say that "Darkest Places" last season was at the bottom of my list until I rewatched this past summer and it actually went up on my list quite a bit, so this one may do the same....
Although we know that Mon-el is alive, since when is grieving the loss of someone that you love considered a pity party?
