Distant Sun Recap

It's the return of Kevin Smith in the director's chair! The fabled director returns for his second shot at a Supergirl episode and this one was filled with action and mysteries! Apart from Kevin Smith, the mighty Lynda Carter returned to the show as The President of the United States! And if that wasn't enough star power, Teri Hatcher and Kevin Sorbo reprized their roles as Rhea and Lar Gand respectively. There was much to unpack in this episode, here are the points that stood out to us:

  1. Bacon: Melissa has always had a hilarious reaction with food as Supergirl. BACON! Very much the reaction we have! Also, hilarious how fast Supergirl is compared to Mon-El. You know, "his stuff was at the DEO"! Ha ha ha! Fitting that Supergirl would use her speed more after an episode with the Flash!
  2. Yoga: It was a very cute start to the scene with Alex and Maggie walking together after the failed yoga trip! Even though they ran into her ex, Alex was "being pretty cool about all of it". Very interested to see where this goes!
  3. 300 Quartz Crowns: Mon-El confronts his parents to get the real scoop on who hired bounty hunters to kill Supergirl. This obviously made sense to us. Aside from Cadmus, who'd hire intergalactic Bounty Hunters? And Cadmus wouldn't want more aliens on the planet, so logically it must be the Daxamites. Calling a spade a spade.
  4. Mon-El vs Supergirl: Kara is much stronger than Mon-El which is a fact that is necessary for the show we think! That said, it wasn't a light fight for Supergirl and Mon-El. He did throw her into a car! That said, it was pretty funny to see them fight. Their reactions to hitting each other was hilarious! As Mon-El said, he had it coming.
  5. Rhea Slashes Supergirl: Well someone's true nature showed pretty quickly. Rhea pulls a Kryptonian Dagger out, slashes Supergirl across the face and then stabs her in the leg! WOW it was a vicious fight! Then Mon-El agreed to go home to Daxam to be the prince and save Supergirl. The biggest revelation from this fight though was that Lar Gand didn't know that Rhea put out the bounty. This means that Lar Gand could be a good guy in the end.
  6. Alex and Maggie: Alex could have come down on Maggie like a ton of bricks but somehow she channels what's best for the health of their relationship and does a stand up job being there for Maggie! Maggie, more or less, is given permission to be vulnerable with Alex and that is the recipe for a successful relationship! Way to knock it out of the park Alex.
  7. Mon-El Wants to Change Daxam: Resigned to his fate to return to Daxam, Mon-El takes a rare moment with his father to plead for a better system than the monarchy that Daxam had. Taking all that he's learned on Earth, Mon-El considers what he could do at his home planet. Then Rhea appears! She is running everything and clearly the more dangerous one of the parents. Lar Gand didn't even know that Rhea put the bounty out on Kara.
  8. The Old J'onn Switcheroo: J'onn takes on Kara's form to fight off the Daxamite crew and void any advantage the Kryptonite weapons gave Rhea. Love seeing a good J'onn fight sequence! Not to mention, Winn shows up to save Mon-El and you get the best Star Wars joke of all time! Winn's reaction to Mon-El finally seeing Star Wars wins the comedy award of this episode!

Final moments as always have a lot to unpack. J'onn has to take the President's discipline for going to the Daxamite ship. We liked that J'onn chose his Supergirl family over orders but who the heck is the president? Maggie gets closure with Emily on behalf of Alex's work which was very sweet! Mon-El and Kara share a moment of victory in Kara's apartment. Most shocking however, Rhea kills Lar Gand! We knew she was fierce but for goodness sake, killing your husband because he wants your son to be happy? FIERCE!

Besides, this season has made the love interests front and centre and they seem to say, romantic love is the most important love of all. So, if that is the show's theme going forward, I'd like to be able to watch it without failed expectations. Oh and, in this, this show is now no different from other shows that I watch, so I have stopped blaming it for things everybody else does.

Just wanted to share this because we thought your phrasing was very interesting. A year ago we asked Ali Adler about the show's focus on non-romantic relationships. https://supergirl.tv/paleyfest-red-carpet-interviews-video-2016 I think it starts around 1:30 in.

Thank you! :) It was interesting and I had not seen it before.

Now how about showing more of what she can do?

They could have done that in this episode when Kara herself wanted to take on all challengers but it was decided to stand her down. Maybe on reflection the budget for this episode went on the Daxam ship and all the happenings there.

Stewart Tick "Wow - so many fans seem to feel the same way I do about certain aspects of the show!
I agree about Cat - and actually wrote a fan fiction story for Halloween last year in which I had Cat "literally phone in her part"

I was a fan of Cat but even more of Catco with Kara, James and Winn (the Super friends) working together, an aspect of the show I've certainly missed this season.

"I also miss Cat. I found her the most entertaining of all the supporting characters. She was also in hr unique way a friend of both Kara/Supergirl. It's unfortunate that we no longer hear from Cat and I would be happy if all Calista FLockhart did was literrally phone in her part."

I can appreciate the romantic relationships in SuperGirl; however, I long for the action that was seen in the season 1 episodes. As for Cat, she was and is a very close friend of Kara/SuperGirl - so it would be nice to see her once in awhile. Seeing her does not mean that SuperGirl is in need of her advice, it just means SuperGirl would like to see her friend. I think there has been alot of growth of the SuperGirl character from season 1 to season 2 but I think that villains like MonEl's mother are long overdue. There have been very good scenes this season between Kara and Alex but I never tire of them and always want more of them with longer dialogue. I agree with Argo that they rushed Kara's love relationship in its intensity. However, now what I would like the show to concentrate on is expansion of the strength, power and dynamics of the character SuperGirl and her growth as the superhero that National city needs.

I also agree to wanting to see more strength and power in Supergirl. Previous show have done more than enough to show that she isn't invincible. Now how about showing more of what she can do?

I find myself wondering what the next episode of SuperGirl will bring. The Queen is so devious you just do not know where she is coming from and I wonder if her and the president know each other. Either way, the next couple of episodes should be good.

Continued from last post...
Ep. 8 -- Kara knows something is going on and BOOOOOM the kiss.
Ep. 9 -- Mon-El makes the decision he wants to be a Superhero and falls more for Kara.
Ep. 10 -- Set back episode for their relationship, except that Mon-El figures out his feelings, Kara does not.
Ep. 11 -- Nothing happens relationship wise.
Ep. 12 -- Kara figures out her feelings.
Ep. 13 -- Both on the same page, and they take the plunge.
Then Ep. 14 -- 17 + the Crossover has been strengthening of that relationship through adversity. 4 episodes of that.
So not sure how this relationship was rushed....at all.

AAAAND, as we now know from Kara in the crossover episode....it as been 9 months since Mon-El landed on Earth. That isn't a rushed relationship.

I don't see the Mon-el relationship as rushed at all. Timeline so to speak.

Ep. 1 -- she finds this dashing young man in a Kryptonian pod. Bang he's from my home planet, and face it....he's hot.
Ep. 2 -- she speaks to him letting him know that she will be with him in his journey on this planet...
Ep. 3 -- ooops, he's a Daxamite, but Supergirl learns an important lesson on prejudice that continues throughout the season.
Ep. 4 -- Not much change here...
Ep. 5 -- that lesson is a hard one to learn, but Mon-El is falling for Kara and its obvious.
Ep. 6 -- Mon-El has fallen for Kara, he just doesn't know it yet...and his journey as a hero, and someone that Kara can respect begins.
Ep. 7 -- Mon-El realizes that Kara is truly and exceptional person and someone he needs to emulate which is far deeper than a physical attraction. Kara realizes that Mon-El means far more to her than she realized, she is just one step behind Mon-El at this point.
Continued next post. :)

I for one, did not want a format repeat of the first season. Supergirl goes up against a villain, it is a massive struggle, but she prevails, she gets advice from Cat and then goes and eats pizza on the couch with Alex. That was fun to watch in the first season, but I appreciate those things with other people in the 2nd season with just a little bit of growth sprinkled in. Kara is much more confident as Kara and as Supergirl, so the confrontations have a different flavor than last season. I would have hoped for more formidable villains, but that just hasn't happened. Kara hasn't needed Cat this season, SHE HAS BEEN the voice of inspiration and strength. We have had great scenes between Kara and Alex, just not on the couch, we now have fun scenes on the couch with Mon-El. So, I can appreciate their effort to bring a new flavor to the series.
My negatives that I've seen are really not with those changes, I've been fine with all of those. It has been more in the area of dialogue, editing and a seemingly disjointed story. I would love for them to bring back Ted Sullivan to the writing team, and give a lion share of the writing to the writers from last season.
My hope for next season is that with the early renewal they can produce and write a story line for an entire season, rather than what has seemed to be an episode by episode disjointed story. I've enjoyed many episodes, but the season is missing something.
