Tonight we got to see the debut of Nick Sagar's recurring villain Rip Roar! With Ma'alefa'ak being seemingly caught and contained, Supergirl turns her attention to a new threat and the continuing investigation on just what Andrea Rojas is doing. Alex and Kelly have an unexpected date night and William meets with a new source in his investigation. Supergirl meets and takes on Rip Roar who brings a very dangerous threat to National City. Lots to unpack in tonight's episode, here's what stood out to us:
- Kara and William Meet: Kara seems to be keeping Nia in the dark about William's motivations. She then goes down to Noonan's and meets William where she lets him know that her sister Alex works for a small clandestine government agency that might have captured a would-be assassin in Mexico. Kara seems to be putting a lot of faith in William. He agrees to sign the NDA with DEO, William and Kara head to the DEO to watch Alex interview the assassin. They then discover that Rip Roar, The Tattooed Woman and the Wind Woman are all working via a secret assassins-for-hire server on the web. William gets too heated and tries to control the interview. We then learn Rip Roar killed his best friend.
- Rip Roar Steals a Lex Corp Laser: Rip Roar breaks into a facility where the DEO was holding some of Lex's old weapons. One of them was a laser that can kill undetected from over 26.2 miles away. Brainy decides that he needs to interview the other assassin. He puts on the tattoos and compartmentalizes his brain to let the alien talk through him. The tattoo alien doesn't really give much information but only really confirms that they get their orders from a website that doesn't really inform them of the larger employer. Just then, the Leviathan woman from the season four finale is joined by Rip Roar and Rip Roar is given the order to "do what Lex Luthor couldn't, change the world".
- Russel and Andrea: William and Kara break into Andrea's office at Catco. They find a secret compartment where Andrea is keeping foreign currency and a picture of Russel and herself. William remembers the last time that he spoke with Russel where he found Rip Roar instead. William asks where Russel is and Rip Roar just says "Dead" but it's clear to us that Russel is Rip Roar. William doesn't know yet and there never was a body found of his friend.
- Satellite Station: Supergirl heads to the Satellite facility where she is able to find Rip Roar. She is able to beat Rip Roar down but after gaining a piece at the Satellite facility, the laser is now a fusion energy weapon that is 100 times hotter than the center of the sun. He shoots Supergirl with the laser and she is over-energized. She calls for J'onn to help get her back under control. The team is able to discover that Rip Roar is planning to use the weapon to melt an ice cap in the antarctic that will flood much of the Earth. Supergirl and Martian Manhunter get there just in time to see Rip Roar fire the weapon!
- Antarctica: Martian Manhunter and Supergirl quickly capture Rip Roar. The problem now is that the amount of water that is being released is so much that the whole Pacific Coast will be drowned out with a massive wave. Supergirl and J'onn have to figure out how to stop the water from killing half the planet. Brainy tasks Nia to head to the coast where a massive wave can be stopped while Supergirl and J'onn counter rotate around the geyser to stop it from putting out more water. Of course the people with the contact lenses in don't see the danger coming and need to be saved because they are basically living in the virtual world. Supergirl, J'onn and Dreamer are all successful at stopping the threat.
- The Aftermath: Rip Roar's costume seems to be bio-connected to him. His suit is part of him. The DEO can't seem to use their truth detector on him. Kelly then heads into work but breaks down crying noting that Alex could have died and she is scared of losing another fiance in the line of duty.
In the final wrap up moments Ma'alefa'ak decides that he is ready to kill J'onn. Lena lets him know that she didn't remove his mental block and when he goes to incept on Lena, she beats him to it using her new tech! Lena has the ability to incept people! After that, Kelly and Alex celebrate their date-a-versery a day late. Kara takes proof to William that Russel is actually Rip Roar. Andrea sits in a limo where Leviathan's older woman is already seated. She let's Andrea know that Rip Roar is a problem and they would like her to fix it!

Speaking of "Star Trek". I kind of get the impression that the character of Brainy on this show was inspired in part by Mr. Spock.....
LOL... Yes, he asked for it... but I'd still think Lena would have a problem with stooping to that Luther-like level. Unlike Lillian who was quite comfy trying to poison Lex at the White House.
I have a whole different take on Lena shooting Lex. To me is wasn't murder but more like self defense. If she didn't kill him eventually he was going to kill her. They should put a medal on the lovely Lena for ridding the world of that evil bastard. She is the most interesting character on the show except for Kara/Supergirl.
I totally agree. To me, the catalyst to Lena's spiral should be the fact that she murder or thinks she murdered her brother Lex due to his betrayal and egomaniacal quest for dominance. Murdering a family member is far more likely to send someone over the edge. Perhaps it has but Lena is in denial and she is just focused on Kara's lie as she is avoiding what she did to Lex... whether or not he deserved it.
Yes. "My bestie lied to me. Therefore, I must reprogram humanity to not harm each other," might be a smidge of an overreaction.
I am disappointed in the Lena story-line It seems weak and poorly thought out almost like she is weak minded when it comes to being kept in the dark about Kara/Supergirl I mean the woman is fully grown and should be able to behave as an adult.
Dislikes:
1. Alex making DEO related decisions based on her feelings for Kelly. A HUGE disservice to the integrity of the character.
2. Kara lying to Nia. Nia is inner circle and Kara only learned what she knows because of Nia's help. Kara told Alex and J'onn, so this is just WRONG!
3. William going to his best friend's Russell's house and seeing Rip Roar, face only half covered, and is too dense not to know Russell was Rip Roar in a fancy new suit. He is a reporter, right? Although, this is comic book cannon made famous by Superman. So, I guess this shouldn't be surprising but the show attempting to make it a big REVEAL at the end felt insulting to me as a viewer.
4. This actually isn't something that happened and I've said it before but I think Lena's descent should be tied to her thinking she "felt forced" to murder Lex due to his dishonesty and egomaniacal tendencies as opposed to merely hurt that Kara kept her secret identity from her...
Yes, that's one of the main reasons I started writing my own Supergirl fan fiction stories. I wanted to show that you could keep Kara's power level and "damage-resistance" level consistent (and keep the science accurate), and still have a good Supergirl story. I wanted to write stories in which Kara is the undisputed leader of the Team, dominates the heroics, and accomplishes the "final takedown" of the villains. Another thing I wanted to do is place Kara and her supporting cast in realistic down to earth situations. (People in the Forum were saying that they would like to see Kara handling more everyday challenges with everyday people,) Hopefully, I have succeeded to some extent in accomplishing that!
Here's the reference I used:
https://www.space.com/17137-how-hot-is-the-sun.html
And it does say about 27 million Fahrenheit or 15 million Celsius.
I multiplied wrong (by 1000 instead of 100). Mea culpa!
I love space.com !
