Originally called "Two Rings", Kevin Smith returned tonight to complete his hat trick of directing Supergirl episodes with "Damage"! While his first two forays into the show were very action-packed and perhaps had a little less on the emotional scale, there was no shortage on the emotional front tonight! In his own podcast, without giving away any spoilers, he noted that this episode would be much heavier than the ones he's done before. Also he was astounded at everyone's ability to bring so much to the show. If you haven't heard Kevin's thoughts on this episode (Spoiler free) you should check out his podcast here. But, just because a certain thing stood out to Kevin doesn't mean it stood out to us, for that, read below:
- Who Needs a Robin When You Have Alex Danvers: It's been a Superhero cliche for a very long time, having a sidekick is almost necessary at some point in your hero journey. That said, we don't think Supergirl could ask for a better second half than her own sister. The way the two worked to take down the bus hijacking was flawless! Alex has moves even Batgirl hasn't seen!
- Morgan Edge Lays Down The Hammer: Lead poisoning, with small particles of lead flowing around the planet (at least just enough to keep Daxamites off of Earth), it's conceivable that some humans got poisoned from Lena's miracle bomb. Whether it's true or not doesn't matter though, all Edge needs is for it to be possible.
- Maggie & Alex Separate: Just about everyone that follows the show beyond turning it on when it's 8pm knew this was coming. We were surprised at how early the breakup happened. They alluded to days of arguments and discussions which the audience was not privy to, but in what felt like ripping off a band-aid, Alex did what she thought she needed to do to be in a relationship that included kids. Sadly, that didn't include Maggie.
- Lena Press Conference: Shots are fired during Lena's press conference and just as our heroes do, both James and Kara spring into action! We've seen Kara deflect and catch bullets before but the side grab was a pretty awesome touch! James diving to save a Luthor also had a pretty specific visual significance. Not sure we'd have seen that when he was in Metropolis.
- Alex and Maggie Talk Moms: After a "canoodling" moment post break-up, Alex finds a way to describe her intentions of wanting to be a mother to Maggie. That said, she and Maggie are still very much in love and it seems that they are able to come to some kind of understanding, even though it's not ideal.
- Lena Confronts Edge: Well in a brief moment of grief. Lena does intend to shoot Edge but it doesn't go her way. From there, trouble! She wakes up in this C130 that is remote flown and is carrying more of the compound that will make citizens of National City sick. In a turn, the plane breaks in half and Kara is forced to hold the two pieces up long enough to inspire Lena to climb to the breaking point and jump to Supergirl and save herself! Supergirl inspires! Say what you will about the writers or show runners, one thing is true, they always get that right about Supergirl. She inspires!
- Alex and Maggie Part Ways: Alex and Maggie say theit final goodbye. They acknowledge they were each made better by the other and for knowing each other and their lives will never be the same. And, as the episode was originally titled, the camera pans out and we see the two rings left on the counter.
In the end, Kara puts everything on hold and sets out for Midvale, aka Home. With Alex in tow, we will get to learn how the two Danvers sisters became the best sisters on TV. Oh and one other thing . . . SAM WAS SHOT!!!!! She even found the bullet in her clothes! Guess who's bulletproof now!!!!!!!

A rewatch is a must!!
I smiled when I saw the GBS initials.
I have to rewatch this ep, Katie was so good in it with all those emotions
We can only hope they put the brakes on the romances for a while. last season got out of control in that respects
So now here's my score on Damage..a mediocre episode which given Kevin Smith's two last good ones, is a letdown.
ACTING…3.5
ADVENTURE…4.0
WRITING…3.5
EFFECTS…3.5
POLITCAL PENALTY…-1.0 (Morgan Edge…need I say more?)
BONUS…(0.5) Danvers sisters being…the Danvers sisters.
(0.5) Looks like the Galaxy Broadcasting System (GBS) is still in operation. That’s where a certain CK once worked at a Metropolis TV station named WGBS.
Score...14.5/20
Miss Mon-El too things will really kick into High gear when he return with the Legion and all.
I just rewatched the episode and Katie's scenes were even better the second time around. The scene where she's drunk and full of self-loathing was so emotionally charged. Katie and Melissa did such a great job expressing a wide range of emotions from anger to awe.
I'm right there with you on the relationship storylines. I'm hoping against hope that they pump the brakes on the romantic relationships this season.
The female relationships on this show is what really (IMO) makes Supergirl such a powerful show. The superhero world is dominated by male heroes/villains and it's such a breath of fresh air to have a female centered superhero show. I know there was a Wonder Woman series back in the day but that was before my time. So Supergirl is the first for me and I'm so proud of what this show has and will accomplish.
My thoughts exactly!!
