Confidence Women Recap

Leviathan is here! The very secretive and powerful shadow entity was mentioned by name for the first time! Supergirl was even the one to hear it! Of course, we got a big dose of just who Lena and Andrea were to each other in the past! Also, in the new Lena fashion, she was quick to refuse helping a friend because Lena has no friends. Acrata also made her debut as more than just a cloud of smoke. Andrea's connection to Leviathan is quite fascinating. That's not all the happened tonight, here's what stood out to us:

  1. Acrata is Revealed: The DEO is holding Rip Roar in their facility but their truth seeker can't break through his Bio tech. Supergirl has brought William to the DEO to see if he can break through to Rip Roar. Just then the power is cut to the DEO and Alex and Supergirl go into action. Acrata teleports around the DEO taking out agents everywhere! Alex and Supergirl retreat back to Rip Roar where they are able to stop Acrata's attack. As long as Supergirl is guarding Rip Roar, Acrata can't get to him.
  2. Lena and Andrea: Andrea goes to ask for Lena's help getting into the DEO. Lena says no but then Andrea asks as a friend. Lena says they aren't friends anymore but Andrea says they once were. We then cut to a flashback. The two girls meet at boarding school. They form a fast friendship bonding over the movie Titanic. Then we jump ahead to five years ago. SURPRISE! Jon Cryer's Lex was back for a new scene. He is devoting himself to killing Superman. He starts to ruin the company by devoting resources to his feud with Superman. He fires Lena. Subsequently, Andrea's company is also going through something similar. The phone they made is already out of date. Lena and Andrea commiserate and head out to find the fabled medallion and stop Lex from getting Kryptonite into the air.
  3. Acrata is Born: The pair seem to be a good duo. They are quickly able to track down the medallion. Andrea falls through to the cavern first and time seems to stop. A messenger from Leviathan is there. Her family and their fortunes could change so long as Andrea take the medallion and serves Leviathan. She takes it and agrees to the terms. Andrea convinces Lena that it was never there. A year later, as Lex is being arrested for turning the sun red, Lena is visited by her then boyfriend, Jack Sphere. He offers to take her to London to get her away from the Lex mess. At a party there, she runs into Andrea whose company has rebounded and sees that she has the medallion. Lena is betrayed and she says they are done as friends.
  4. National City Move: Lena moves to National City. She wants to change the Luthor name as we know but this effectively ends her relationship with Jack. On the other hand, Andrea meets Russel and the two start a relationship. Back at L Corp, Kara visits Lena and invites her to game night. Lena says she just wants a business relationship. But Kara's genuine offer has Lena considering friendship again. Andrea is visited by the Leviathan woman and told she needs to perform a task for them or her company will fail again. She taps the medallion three times and becomes Acrata. Then using her powers she breaks into a governor's office and kills him.
  5. Leviathan Strikes: Russel worries about Andrea and snoops on her stuff when she is in the shower and finds the medallion. Somehow, Leviathan was there the moment he found it. Their secrets are more important than any life and they proceed to beat him. It isn't until Andrea pleads for his life and introduces Leviathan to his tech that they stop. Russel then becomes Rip Roar for Leviathan.
  6. Back to Today: Andrea shows Lena the medallion and her abilities. Lena doesn't understand the Leviathan component to it. Andrea begs Lena for her help to get into the DEO. That seems to be enough to sway her and the two are back at it again. We cut to Supergirl and Alex. Supergirl as she always does tries to find the best in someone and asks for Russel to help. He reveals that he works for Leviathan. Just then, Lena calls for Supergirl in her office taking her out of the DEO. Lena gives Acrata an inception device that renders the DEO agents useless. Only Alex, with her inception inhibitor implant isn't affected. She wanders the DEO and calls for Supergirl but Lena has blocked all the signals coming and going from her office so Supergirl can't hear Alex's call for help. Acrata attacks but J'onn is able to feel the inception and heads to the DEO. Brainy is taken over by the Inception and Alex has to disable him. Alex finally yells for Supergirl and Kara can hear it! She arrives and takes care of the situation but Acrata gets Rip Roar out.

In the final wrap up moments, Lena holds Rip Roar hostage until she gets the Medallion. Supergirl notes that they did get the Leviathan name out of Rip Roar before he is gone. Andrea tries to get Rip Roar out to safety but Leviathan kills him. Whatever powers the medallion once had have transferred to Andrea. Lena decodes the medallion and also discovers Leviathan.

I really like the backstory to Lena in this episode. Makes me fully understand the reason behind her actions, construed to be villainous for some. I still don’t see her as a villain. And I really do hope that Lena could be eventually redeemed as a person. In reality, this turnaround could take years and may not happen at all. But we’ll, tv is tv.

Also one thing: Since Andrea took the medallion, shouldn’t it leave a gaping hole clear of cobwebs? Why are the cobwebs still there? Just a plot hole so that Lena wouldn’t find out that it was taken?

I don't think she is a villain, but she is really overlooking a lot of what she has done this season and at the end of last season, and heaping all the blame on Kara. That is a problem to me.....not villainous by any means, but certainly disingenuous.

However, that HORRIBLE wig they put on Melissa on the past scenes.....oh wow.
That wig was indeed horrible. I’m not a fan of the bangs but if that’s the alternative then thank Rao they went with the bangs instead of the wig to maintain past seasons looks.

Totally enjoyed the scenes, though few this episode, with Supergirl. Enjoyed the backstory work as well.

However, that HORRIBLE wig they put on Melissa on the past scenes.....oh wow.

Sometimes it's the little things that Supergirl does that gives me joy in watching, in this episode it was when she saves William by Super-speeding him out of harms way at the DEO near the start of the episode. Saving and protecting her friends is always so nice to watch.

Nice one Supergirl :-) .

I totally agree. I also like when we see Supergirl's reactions when she hears her sister yelling her name or when her friends use their signal watches. Seeing her being normal when someone needs her like that time when James got shot and she woke up hearing the signal watch.

Very interesting writing; lots of twists and turns!

Why is Andrea wearing the medallion she is supposed to hide as a necklace? I guess the plot required it so Lena would see it; but Leviathan must not be too happy about her fashion statement!

I just remembered that Lena once told Andrea that Superman is affected by kryptonite. I have a feeling that Andrea will remember and use some on Supergirl. Maybe Lena will step in to help Kara. She will choose Kara, her true friend, over Andrea. Although, at this point, with everything that Lena has done behind Kara's back, I'm not too open to the idea of Kara and Lena becoming friends again. I think the writers should have turned Lena into a bit of a villain but without doing things that are directly aimed at Kara. Andrea looks more redeemable at this point than Lena.

Amusingly, they did work in a political reference of a different sort, namely hi-tech firm buying a major press outlet. For no points, name the hitech firm that purchased one of the two most influential newspapers in the United States.

Leviathan to me, seems like a characterization of the evils of Big Tech (Google, Facebook, etc.). If anyone sells their soul to Leviathan, and then decides to turn against them, they face major peril. Of course selling one's soul to the devil is an old trope dating back as far as I know to the old musical and movie "D**n Yankees."

Or a bit further back, to "Faust." ;-)

But apropos of the musical, this season's subtitle could be: "Whatever Lena wants, Lena gets..."
