Blurred Lines Recap

Happy Batwoman/Supergirl day to you all! Tonight was another great evening of television with Batwoman finally claiming her real role and our Girl of Steel once again saving the day! On Supergirl, J'onn investigated possibly the biggest mystery he's had yet. Who, how and why was his memory wiped of his brother's existence. Kara worked a genuine effort to mend her relationship with Lena and Kelly tried to help out an old friend. Of course there was much more to the episode than just that! Here's what stood out to us!

  1. Spider Kills: The mysterious woman that has the spider tattoo seems to kill right from the start! William was at the same club warning someone that they should play ball. We'll get more on that later. Meanwhile, the Danvers sisters and the Olsen siblings head out for a walk. Kara expresses that she is nervous about her lunch with Lena, it will be the first time the two have hung out since Kara told Lena she was Supergirl. We cut quickly to Lena and Hope where Hope learns that there are journals that Lex kept on Q-waves that could be used to take away Superman's invulnerability. Lena derives a plan to use Kara to steal the journals for her.
  2. J'onn Needs His Memories: J'onn asks Dreamer to help him get his memories. The theory is that if J'onn can discover them through dreams instead of technology it would be safe. In the mean time, Lord of the Rings actor, Sean Astin, makes his debut. He is actually Ma'alefa'ak disguised as Kelly's friend Pete. Of course, Ma'alefa'ak's goal is to actually get rebooted via Q-Waves.
  3. Lena and Kara's Lunch: Lena and Kara seem to be ok on the surface. Kara actually flies to France to get Lena her favorite desert! Lena, however, seems to waste no time in manipulating Kara to do her bidding. She needs Lex's journals and so she claims that the only way she gets relief from her battle with Lex is to read the journals. Kara, kind of in a moral gray area, offers to get them for her friend. Kara already feels bad though when James notices that Kara isn't herself and he jokes that she looks like she just robbed a bank. Kara clearly doesn't feel great about what she did.
  4. Carl Lumby is Back: During J'onn's dream we discover that Ma'alefa'ak can't connect to the Martian hive mind. He can, however, inflict his will on others. Carl Lumby's M'yrnn returns in the dream sequence. He feels that the only way keep the Green Martians safe is to take away Ma'alefa'ak. M'yrnn continues to pray for Ma'alefa'ak but it isn't enough. J'onn keeps visiting Ma'alefa'ak from time to time but in the end, it's the White Martians that find Ma'alefa'ak and free him. It is clear that White Martians recruit Ma'alefa'ak to their side and that's why Ma'alefa'ak was so evil. He was abandoned by J'onn and M'yrnn.
  5. Kara and Caroline: The spider woman is identified. Caroline O'Conner was a sniper for the army but now has bonded with an alien that can take tattoos and turn them into real things. Kara is able to get to Caroline's apartment and find a flash drive but Caroline is able to get away after Guardian and Supergirl fail to capture her. James is infected by the tattoos and is taken to the DEO where Alex can remove them.
  6. J'onn Wipes M'yrnn's Memory: J'onn can't take the pain his father is in since he failed to save Ma'alefa'ak. With Ma'alefa'ak being on the other side of the civil war, J'onn knows that his people will need M'yrnn's leadership in the coming war so he is the one that actually erases M'yrnn's and his own memory.
  7. Battle on Two Fronts: Supergirl and Alex take on Caroline and after a few scuffles, Supergirl and Alex are victorious! Of course the two sisters win easily! On the other hand, Kelly puts her friend Pete into the Q-Wave machine and just like that Ma'alefa'ak's ability to incept minds returns. He can make you think or feel whatever he wants you to feel. The only side effect is that now Kelly can see Ma'alefa'ak in whatever form he is in. This puts Kelly's life in danger so Alex and team decide to send her away for her own protection. Just when Caroline is about to speak to who she works for, a black cloud of shadow appears, stabs her in the heart, and poofs away. Was this Acrata?

Final wrap up moments. Kara does end up stealing Lex's journals for Lena. She states that for a friend like Lena, there are no boundaries. Kelly is whisked away to safety with James but Alex and team don't know where they are going. Kara gives James a transmat watch that Lex Luthor used in case he needs it. Ma'alefa'ak is still on the loose.

I Saw it. But isnt the other one for Alex ?

Am I the only one who noticed -- I do not see it here -- Supergirl getting two sugar frosted donuts.
I’ll have to watch again but it looked like Kara was double fisting meaning eating both at once. She didn’t offer one to her sister. The second donut may have been intended for Alex but Kara needed it more.

Quoting Alex:
All the upset about her being “defeated” or “captured” People need to watch it again as neither happened. She got in trouble during two fights but the first time she got free and James just got in the way. Second time she never got a chance to get herself free before they had others show up. Since she heat blasted the webbing off before it’s assumed she would have to free herself again. This has all been touched on by astute posters here already. Maybe they should let her battle her way through things to show her abilities rather than have others interfere all the time.

For me, it was less a question of defeat or capture (as I used neither word). It was that she was shown being webbed to a wall that she certainly could have torn apart with no problem. But she didn't--because, I surmise, Guardian had to have something to do.

Nerfing the Girl of Steel to showcase other characters has been a problem in the past. I don't like seeing it now, even when it isn't as egregious as last year.

Your last suggestion, which I bolded, is something I can totally agree with! Showing her getting out of those trouble spots on her own would exhibit her strength and tenacity.

M'yrnn looked like Sarek( spock's father) on this episode.

This was an awesome episode. Loved it. Glad they actually used martian language and conversation in this episode. I was looking for that when J'onn's father was staying with J'onn. I love Supergirl having a battle. I love J'onn and martian manhunter is my favorite superhero but I dont him to steal the spotlight for Supergirl.

I'm glad James is leaving. Guardian is useless now.

I do wish the DEO was still a secret. Seems like anyone can see it and have access to it.

Overall, I look forward to next week's episode.

My biggest complaint with the way the show does this is they either take a villain like this one and have them put Supergirl in danger in just a straight up one on one battle. Or they take a Supervillain like Reign or Red Daughter and beat her to death. Nothing in between.

I would rather see a villain use some sort of deception, and see them knock Supergirl out, take her prisoner and put her in a situation where she has to, and does get herself out, using her brain and her power. If the villain tricks her to capture her, I can process that. If they can simply beat her, that I find harder to imagine.

No, nope, nuh uh, no siree, not spiders..... nononononono

Anyway I really hope they don't destroy the Lena/Kara friendship. In my opinion it's the best friendship on the show so I really want them to get past this. Lena isn't a bad person. She's hurt yes but who can blame her after everyone either betrayed her, lied to her or both. she has serious trust issues. The problem she has is she has no one left to trust other than an A.I. who I think is somehow manipulating her in some way. Maybe Leviathan has something to do with it? I don't think we know the full story yet. But I fully believe they will save Lena (maybe from Leviathan or some other shady organisation?) or from herself

I hope the Kara/Lovely Lena drama will play out and in the end their friendship will be stronger then ever. I agree with you and think that Hope is up to no good.

The lovely Lena indeed. Katie has made that character her own

The way she acting at the moment makes no sense to the way she's been since she arrived. She saved the aliens by turning against her own mother. She chose to save Supergirl over her ex who she still cared deeply about when it would have been so easy for her to do nothing and let SG die. Hell she even killed her own brother because she knew he'd always be a massive threat alive. Which leads me to believe an organisation like Leviathan has something to do with it. I don't think it's full blown control as Lena stopped herself from revealing Kara's secret but it could be the power of suggestion. Anyway I hope Kara can save her

Didnt really see this as a Supergirl episode. Hopefully we now have ALL of Jonn's backstory because I have grown tired of this storyline.

Brainy and Nia are long past the I dont care realm for me.

Loving the Lena storyline. Finally a Lena storyline that has a bite to it.

Not sure why Guardian was in the first fight scene, absolutely no help...only kept Supergirl from capturing the bad guy.

Thought we had moved on from the Alex to the rescue stuff, but I guess not.

All in all a 7 out of 10 for me. Not great, but enjoyed Supergirl/Kara parts for sure.

You perfectly illustrated all of my issues with this episode. Though I would have given it a 5 or a 6. I know they rely on these sub-plots to ease the burden on Melissa. But Brainy and Nia's story doesn't feel particularly strong, J'onn's is so central to the story that it doesn't feel like Supergirl's show.

That and her having to be saved...twice...that really bothered me. I like it when she's put in dire straights. But what makes her heroic, to me, is overcoming those odds, and coming up with a way to defeat her foes on her own.
