Back from the Future Part 1 Recap

Tonight's all new episode welcomed back a beloved series regular, Jeremy Jordan's Winn Schott! On top of that, tonight was David Harewood's second time directing! While the episode continued the drama, we just know these actors had a ton of fun! Before we jump into what stood out in this episode, we should note that this will be the last new episode of Supergirl for at least two weeks because of the Superbowl and other award shows. With that out of the way, let's jump into the episode:

  1. Toyman's Back: Winn is back but he isn't our Winn. This one is from a different Earth and is pretty evil. Lex uses Brainy to bust Winn out of jail. Lex sizes him up and sets him on a course to attack the toy convention in National City. Lena is continuing to investigate Q-waves but the universe has changed and she is back to square one. She needs Lex's help but Lex is so laser focused on Leviathan he bargains for Lena's help and offers a new source for Q-waves in two days. At the Toy Con, Supergirl hunts this new toy man but it's our Winn Schott who saves the day!
  2. Winn's Back: Our Winn is back! He has a wife and a daughter but this new Toyman could destroy everything that Winn has become. He is hunting down this doppelganger with Supergirl's help. Brainy is hiding something from the team but Supergirl and Alex didn't notice. Alex says she doesn't want the Legion ship anywhere near Lex and they take it to J'onn's new headquarters at the Tower! Winn then gets J'onn's brain dump and realizes EVERYTHING! Toyman then pops onto all TVs in National City. He says he needs 1 million followers and he'll light the biggest firework ever!
  3. Exclusive: The Superfriends start looking for Toyman but everyone is pulled in different directions. Andrea is looking to capitalize on all the coverage that Toyman is getting. Because they don't know that Winn isn't Winn, Andrea wants Kara to use her personal connection to Winn to get an exclusive. Kara tries to say no but Andrea waves her job in her face and forces the matter.
  4. Dreamer to the Tower: With all the different waves and technologies, the team is looking for Toyman through Dreamer! Her proximity to Brainy really only let her focus on him. She goes to the balcony to de-stress. Winn Schott heads out to show Dreamer how powerful she really is. He convinces her to try again! Kara then shares a moment with Winn. Winn has an epiphany and they find where Toyman was working but it's a bit too late. Toyman is going to attack the Rojas!
  5. Toyman's Attack: Lex, with Brainy's help, is able to get into the Legion ship and look up Leviathan. Lex recognizes the woman from Catco. Then tigers attack! At the university, Andrea is almost killed by Toyman who is dressed as the mascot. The Superfriends get there in time to save everyone but Winn can't stop Toyman's bomb. He is saved via his legion ring. Supergirl pulls a regular Barry Allen and super speeds all the people in the auditorium to safety.

Final wrap up moments. Winn is safe, there is no longer a warrant out for him. Winn goes to confront Brainy because he was acting odd and spills his guts to Winn. It turns out Brainy is worried he is becoming the bad guy. Lex is too much for him to handle on his own. Lex takes the information cube to Lena and provides her the answer on Q waves. Finally we cut to Game night! Winn, William, J'onn, Alex, Kelly, are all there. They jokingly name Winn Marty because he's back from the future! In the last scene, we see Toyman has some kind of bomb in the DEO!

Kara and William teaming up as reporters and friends is sweet and interesting.

I like the word sweet to describe Kara and William. I've enjoyed his addition to the show this season and Kara's interactions with him are my favourite of all the characters she interacts with.

Thing I liked most about that scene @ Catco was Kara wanted to work with William in order to protect him (not that he knows he's working with Supergirl, wonder if they'll keep that a secret for the rest of the season) which is 1 of the things I like about Kara. I liked what Winn said to Kara earlier in the episode that she put him in danger like every day but it didn't matter because she was there to protect him, Kara certainly did that when she (as Supergirl) directly saved Winn's life 4 times during the course of Season 1. I love Kara protecting her friends.

Back from the Future Part 1 is my favourite episode of the season thus far because it had the most enjoyable Kara/Supergirl moments/scenes with another fine performance from Melissa.

OT but sort of related.Today it was revealed by Christopher McQuarrie on twitter that Henry Czerny, who played Winn's father,The Toyman in season 1 is returning to the Mission Impossible franchise.Czerny played IMF Director Kittridge in the first Mission Impossible film in 1996.He's returning to the role of Kittridge for the upcoming Mission Impossible 7 & 8 that will begin shooting later this year.Kinda of cool.I wish he had appeared more on Supergirl.

I normally never watch Arrow but I watched the last 2 including the finale. I was pleasantly suprised with Kara showing up for Oliver's funeral. I feel this is one big positive change due to the merging of the heroes' earths; people showing up like that when it's not even a crossover. So, like me, if your a fan of Melissa, you should watch the end of the last episode.
Arrow was never my cup of tea but I also watched the finale. I think it was right that Kara and Barry attended Oliver’s funeral. I liked how the camera panned to Kara and Barry when Diggle said “...Oliver brought heroes into the world...”. Here’s the video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hbi_-7BBqLE

I am not an expert on Legion. I have read a few comic books. I watched the animated show. I know Braiac 5! I know Mon-el is Valor and Kara is a super genius intellect who eventually becomes President. I wasn't that familiar with Winn's wife Ayla other than being Lightning Lass, twin to Lightning Lad. She is Winathian, which I found funny Winn marries a Winathian. But, I didnt realize she was considered a queer/bisexual character. I think it's odd they would choose this character as Winn's wife. It seems to send a contrary message. Perhaps there is more to the story yet to unfold. Like I said, I wasn't aware of this but was curious about the character after this episode and came across this information. Does anyone have any insight on this Winn revelation? I'm sure there was some rationale to the show selecting this particular character as Winn's wife.

I totally agree. I made a similar post earlier under the next episode's synopsis. I was quite surprised to see Kara and think Earth Prime will make crossovers more plausible. It can be to attend a birthday or just do lunch and not have to be major event to get them there... For example, on Black Lightning this week... possible spoiler...

We learned Odell, one of the show6"villians" is from Gotham! Another post Gotham surprise. I can see him popping up at Arkam on Batwoman.

Adjusted Ratings... This is the second week in a row that Supergirl has had more total viewers than Batwoman. It also marks the first time, not including the Crisis crossover, that Supergirl pulled a higher demo than Batwoman.

Ouch. That's pretty ugly for BW.

Good thing live ratings aren't as important to CW.

Yes. On CW they tend to have more viewers in the lead off slot. I think Legacies outpaced Supernatural only once. However, the preemption in LA for Kobe coverage hurt both shows as it's a large market.

I love that CW renews practically everything. It's a business but they (WB and CBS) own all their product. They have incentives.
