Alex is kidnapped, Rhea is making plans with Lena, and Maggie and Kara don't see eye to eye on tactics...this episode had a lot packed into it! We knew from a couple of trailers and sneak peeks that Kara and Maggie weren't going to get along in their efforts to save Alex but how much of that was panic to save the one you love? Also, Lena ended up being much more desperate for a motherly figure than we could have imagined! Here's what stood out to us:
- Hope, Help, and Compassion for All: Our favorite Supergirl comic writer, Sterling Gates, coined the phrase "Hope, Help and Compassion for All" because Superman had "Truth, Justice and The American Way". Its a perfect motto for the Girl of Steel and hearing it starting to percolate through the comic-sphere is amazing!
- Matter Transportation: We had no idea what Rhea was going to offer Lena, but matter transportation would make a heck of a lot of sense! It's an easy technology for the Daxamites to pass on and if there are portals all over the planet, they could take them over easily to mount an invasion!
- Rick Malverne: In the flashbacks in season 1, when Kara was a kid with Alex on the beach, she saved someone from a car wreck. Well, there was that young boy who saw her do it, guess who that is ... Yikes, talk about a bad apple!
- J'onn Interrogation: We've watched every episode of this show multiple times yet somehow, J'onn always surprises us! How Rick was able to plan for that ... no idea! Pretty impressive!
- Maggie Warns Supergirl: The episode had a sort of theme that Maggie had a problem with the Supergirl side of Kara. We actually kind of liked that because it was a good check for Kara to remember balance! Superman commands a room without giving an order. He is calm and calculated! Kara had been developing these traits this season, but she needed the reminder to be calculated even when her sister was taken.
- J'onn Comforts Kara: Kara listening on the DEO balcony for her sister was sweet, but sad because she couldn't hear Alex! Even in Batman v Superman, Kal-El hears Lois' heartbeat just about anywhere on the planet! Not hearing that must be so scary for Kara! That's why we liked J'onn coming to comfort her on the balcony. J'onn, Kara, and Maggie really only know the situation's true hopelessness.
- Supergirl Inspires: We've said it before and we'll say it again! The main reason why we love this show and we love how Supergirl is written, is that she always inspires! Her greatest strength is her ability to inspire people to do the right thing. Over her speed, her strength, or her ability to fly, Kara's best power is the way she gets people to do the right thing!
Final wrap up. This was an episode that we feel delivered everything that was promised! Alex was a badass even being captured, Maggie found a way to get through to Supergirl and Kara inspired the bad guy to make the right choice. All in all, it was a big win. The only wrong choice that was made was that Lena forged a deal with the devil it wouldl seem! More to come next week!

Great observation, I didn't notice that when I first looked at the episode. Great pick up
The oven thing was a nice detail. It made me reflexively cringe but it's true Kara wouldn't need to use oven mitts so why would she. Mon-El probably doesn't need them either. My next thought was I hope she has oven mitts for her human friends and family to use when they come over.
We won't be able to get young Kara on Krypton scenes anymore, those scenes were filmed almost two years ago and the young actor has grown up. We could get young Kara and Alex on Earth but in high school instead of junior high.
Yes it might be interesting to show the first time Kara heated some food or if behind closed doors and curtains young Kara helped with household chores with superspeed or strength.
On the other hand I do not like the car episode. It was a bad idea to do it in season 1 and repeat it in season 2. Rescuing Alex and her plane should always stand as the first superfeat. Besides it really strains credulity that Jeremiah could have explained the car incident away. The same goal could have been accomplished if we saw young Kara dunking a basketball or hitting a baseball a long way and Dad tells her, "Don't do it, what if people saw you?" But we eventually find that Rick Malverne did see it.
I thought the young Kara scenes were fine, and wish there had been more of them.

And the people said "Amen!"
I think you make a good point. It's a great show, I have enjoyed season 2, but I sometimes find myself thinking: "Hey, where's the fire?" Virtually my only criticism is that TPTB try to cram too many story lines into each episode. They should sloooooow down! I'm confident they will have at least 3-4 more years to fill with stories, so what's the rush?
