The Musical Crossover Recap

Grant Gustin (Barry), Melissa Benoist (Kara), Jesse L. Martin (Joe), Victor Garber (Dr. Stein), John Barrowman (Malcolm Merlyn), Jeremy Jordan (Winn) and Carlos Valdes (Cisco) can all sing. If we were Greg Berlanti or any of the other Executive producers, we would totally do a musical! And that is just what we had tonight! Lively, tap dancing, hilarious fun are just a few of the ways we can describe tonight's epic musical crossover. Who would have imagined that not only would we have tv shows crossing over like comic book characters do in the comics, but we would get them to sing and dance too? This is television history! Here's what stood out to us:

  1. J'onn, Mon-El & Kara Appear: We were so excited to see team Supergirl in the Particle Accelerator! We knew Kara would be unconscious but having J'onn there and speaking was startling for us. It felt like J'onn was commanding the room and all before the team even knew who he was or just how powerful he is!
  2. Moon River: Well this might be a something that happens often in this recap because so far every musical number has us so excited! Melissa Benoist's version of Moon River was haunting in a great way. Very little musical accompaniment with her piece really let her voice stand out!
  3. It's All Connected: We knew from Paleyfest that these episodes would come together in a meaningful way, but we were quite surprised just how well all the themes were allowed to work together. Barry and Iris, and Kara and Mon-El both at a crossroads, all while Wally was having confidence issues from his time in the speed force, it was really well done. Like Andrew Kreisberg said at Paleyfest, it's one thing to stop and do a musical, it's another entirely to make it fit into the storylines.
  4. Music Meister's Powers: This was a welcomed addition for us. Music Meister's power is actually stealing other's powers. To stall them from getting their powers back, they have to solve his musical riddles in a dream world. When we type it all out it sounds like a lot, but the way it was presented in the show made it every easy to understand. It made sense. All in all, we are surprised at just how well everything was fitting together.
  5. Superfriend: This original song was amazing! It has everything including a reference to Superman! On top of all that, Blake Neely's theme for both Supergirl and Flash was intertwined with the song which made it so much better! We are going to be listening to this all week!
  6. Supergirl and Flash Saved: Well as it turned out, the Music Meister was more of a guardian angel than a villain in the end, huh? He knows all and could see two heroes with broken hearts and thought he'd step in to teach them a lesson! Now the real question, who the heck was he? Could he be from the 5th dimension as well?
  7. Running Home to You: WOW, we knew Grant Gustin could sing but what a great original piece to finish on! If the whole goal of this episode was to make everone who watches have a smile on their face, then mission accomplished!

In the end it was a silly episode for sure but it worked really well because it didn't ignore what was going on in the other episodes and the characters that weren't stuck in the dream world were able to poke a little fun at it in the end. We mentioned on Twitter that the more Greg Berlanti and his team push the envelope, the more we want each year. So for those keeping track, next year we want Superman to visit again, a true 4-show crossover, and a seocnd musical! Good luck team!

If your toes were tapping along to this whole episode like us, you can purchase the sound track on various digital outlets like Amazon and iTunes!

Having HD I did not have problems with the picture and enjoyed the episode, but the sound was distracting. Particularly "Super friends", a great fun song but it sounded prerecorded and dubbed over the actors afterwards. For example look at the shot where Kara and Barry pop the Top Hats; the voices aren't coming from Mellissa's and Grant's onset mouths.

Quoting KEV-EL:

Spent most of the time yelling at the TV as I have cut the cable and can pick up the CW signal on the ancient 50+ year old TV antenna in the attic. Reception is normally excellent, but tonight the show was pixellating (is that a word?) and at times the sound was out of sync with the picture - for a few seconds, I was thinking "Who edited this?"

I saw the musical last night and loved it. Watching Kara and Barry Tap dance was great fun but I would have liked to have seen them Swing Dance too, maybe some Lindy Hop, Swing Outs and Aerials.

Quoting Triggy:
Anyone else notice when Kara got to the part "My Huckleberry friend", was when she saw Barry?

My Huckle(Barry!) friend... LOL :D

Melissa's Moon River is much more enjoyable to watch on video - as Kara her facial expressions (surprise, confusion, enjoyment) all throughout are so funny to watch.

Ok WOW! So there have been a few folks that said Melissa had to sing a little oddly to make it believable for the show. Well listening to the show's version of Moon River we would say she nailed it. ... but if you get the soundtrack on the various digital ways, you'll hear a version that is FLAWLESS! Wow we are blown away! On top of that, we literally had tears when we heard Supergirl's little theme rift at that end. GET this now!

Looks like I'll be using my itunes card y'all sent me with my signed comic. Thanks, admin!! *goes to download Moon River*

P.S...to be clear, I thought she did well on the show. Just, having known her previous work, you definitely could tell they were having her hold back to fit character.

I thought the crossover was good. Just as some others have mentioned, I think that Melissa could have been given more singing (even though it was the Flash part of the crossover. I'm not a Mon-El fan so In my opinion it would have been better for Alex and Jonn to being her through the portal thing. And just as I thought it didn't even take one whole episode for her to forgive Mon-El and though I was expecting it I was still disappointed. It made her whole heartbreaking scene at the end of the Supergirl episode just look like lip service. To end on a happy note, I love Kara and Barry''s friendship. You can just feel there friendship coming through the screen.

I have more regard for Mon-el but agree this otherwise great episode should have had a different ending. I'd have like to have seen the Flash and Supergirl get their powers back through an act of love. The Flash sees Iris about to be executed by a rival gang, bravely races to her side and regains his superspeed, enabling him to carry Iris out of danger "faster than a speeding bullet". Meanwhile Supergirl sees Mon-el in danger, courageously steps in front of him to be a human shield and regains her invulnerabilty. The bullets bounce off her, she and the Flash leave this world and we see ahot of the astonished gangsters.

I fully agree! Melissa's voice is very strong with a great maturity to it. 'Moon River' seemed too high a key plus she sang, as you said, in a character way, very light and ethereal. It was good, but not the singing I am used to from Melissa.

EXACTLY!! She actually has a POWERHOUSE of a voice... Very full, strong. Last night both songs she was on seemed more in a head voice. Good, nonetheless... Just not her usual power vocals.

For all those saying how incredible Melissa's "Moon River" was, they obviously never really heard her sing. You could tell she was singing in character--as one who's confused as to where she is. And, as the Music Miester stated, "You were a little flat...." I wish she had been given the opportunity to REALLY show how she sings. So, I'm right there with you, as far as, I wish she had been given what she deserves. Yes, it was technically a Flash episode. But, it was also a cross-over. So..... 8)

I thought the 3 dads singing and Barry's final song were actually the highlight musically.

I did enjoy the ep a lot but I think Supergirl gets shortchanged by having their half of the cross-over going first.

Echoing some other posts, I too, wish they could figure a way to give a bit of Cat Grant. Also, not feeling The Guardian at all.

Quoting E.T.:
Had a lot of plot holes (if the Music Meister was nobly trying to bring the couples back together, why was he running around robbing banks?) but was fun on a superficial level. I did wish though that the crossover had more Supergirl characters. The only SG character in the musical dream sequence was Winn. Everyone else was a Flash character. Where were Alex and James? If SG and Flash were supposed to be building this dream world together, shouldn't more of her friends have been there? (May be that SG actors can't sing, but Mon-El and Iris didn't sing and still played a major part in the plot.)

I hope this ends the weekly "Kara and Mon-El break up" loop, it's getting really tiresome. Let them stay together and focus on something else for a change. Alex and Maggie are managing to have a normal relationship while still doing their jobs. Speaking of which, does anyone still work at CatCo? I'd kind of like to see Kat come back for a surprise visit, and read James the riot act for not getting any work done...

I'd also like to see Cat come back and tell James to attend to Catco business and stop the Guardian nonsense.

It really is to badno compromise was worked out with Calista FLockhart. You'd think she could stay in LA and still be a presence as a voice on the phone or do a little filming in LA and with skillful editing make it look as if Cat is back in National City.
