Ok fans, its another Supergirl Monday and as always we are so excited! It's also the first episode of season 2 in the second month of 2017! The Martian Chronicles, by its very name, promised much Martian action and adventure but there was even more than that in this episode! Many of the show's relationships were explored including Alex and Maggie, J'onn and M'Gann, and Kara and Alex! Here's what stood out to us!
- Kara's Relationships: This episode started off on some rocky territory for Kara. She didn't know quite how to deal with Mon-El's confession, she kind of got shot down by Alex, and Winn and her weren't their sweet and usual selves.
- Maggie and Alex Concert: Being in a new committed relationship is something new for Alex and her attempts to find balance with that is a real problem many face! It was sweet to see how Maggie picked up on Alex's trepidations about Kara and let her go check on her despite their plans.
- Hand to the Fire: For an alien race that can shape shift and read your mind, it does seem pretty impossible to figure out who is who. The hand to the fire test was a pretty well conceived test. J'onn has a natural fear of fire which led him to have to overcome that fear in the test. You also had Vasquez be the first to go through the test which was pretty great to see (glad she is back)!
- Winn as White Martian: This had to be so much fun for Jeremy Jordan to play. He actually did a great job as villain too. Very convincing fire spray and table kick! We also liked how the White Martian did run from Kara when exposed. Apples to apples, Kara is stronger and faster and it's great to see her get that recognition.
- There are Two White Martians: Ok, this had us jumping out of our seats! There was a very beautiful moment between Kara and Alex as they were walking through the basement of the DEO followed by another really touching moment with J'onn and M'Gann, but that seemed to get snatched away when J'onn and M'Gann find out there were two White Martians! Alex as a White Martian had our jaws on the floor! INCREDIBLE SURPRISE!
- Epic Duel Martian Fight: This had to be one of the better fight scenes on the show from both seasons! You have Winn who is working to free up the nuclear reactor in the DEO (which yikes, the city permits for that have to be a nightmare) and in the meantime Kara fighting a White Martian that took the form of her sister! Then if that wasn't enough, you have J'onn and M'Gann taking on the other White Martian and M'Gann coming to the aide of J'onn cementing her spot as a Green and team Supergirl. Finally, the real Alex Danvers stepping up and saving them all with her new alien gun!
- Super Sister Wrap Up: This was a scene that we've needed in season 2 for a while now! SO good to see the Danvers sisters back again talking through their issues over dessert! They are one of the best things on this show. It's so clear this show runs on the relationships and speaking of relationships...
- J'onn and M'Gann: While we can understand that the inner hero in M'Gann wants to account for her race's atrocities, it was sad to see her go. J'onn and she seemed to form a bond that was unlike relationships we have on Earth. It wasn't romantic per-say, but it felt like the kind of relationship you can only have when you are psychically linked to someone else. We certainly hope to see her again!
In the final part of the episode, it looked like Kara was ready to admit her feelings about Mon-El but timing just got in the way again! UGH, too bad for Kara, but if those two are going to continue to work together, we have a feeling they are going to find a way to share their feelings soon.

It's too bad to see what James is turning into. He used to be a nice fellow who was calm and thoughtful. Now this Guardian thing seems to have gone to his head.
if it was him just fighting and helping I could deal with it, but the extended trailer has him once again bringing up the arguemtn with her.
a few episodes ago it was him competing about guardians accolades by gleefully boasting about it right in Kara's face who appeared annoyed by it. as a friend If my boasting about my football team over yours is annoying, I probably move onto another topic, but he kept bringing it up over and over and over.
Now that she knows instead of talking about the good he is doing and how its helping people he is trying to make her feel bad. whats the point of that? Kara even this week stayed on point with Winn, "be safe". I am starting to think Clark was friends with James because no one else would be. And maybe, just maybe he finally grew tired of James and suggested moving out to national city. I mean probably not, but they are writing James to be so unlikable.
:)
Because I just cannot help justifying Kara.
Birthday is birthday; you can't postpone that.
Also, Kara apologised for what happened with Clark and it was about running away; she has always felt that she is a burden (as much from what Alex has said, though probably never really meant), so possibly she didn't think Alex would mind.
Alex, on the other hand, came as totally out of character in this episode. (Or, so in love that she forgot all about Kara, which in my opinion, is OOC) Oh, and then, ended up making their last scene together about Kara having hidden "feelings" for Monel instead of just missing her.
Considering how little time she spends with Kara outside of DEO these days, and how much alone Kara really is, it makes sense for Kara to be hurt.
It doesn't make sense for Kara to suddenly develop feelings for Mon El just because he likes her (and drinks club soda) though.
Quoting Brandtm2:
I too was glad there was no Guardian. I wouldn't have minded seeing James Olsen in his previous non-Guardian role but I suppose he at last realized it was time to get back to his very important day job, running Catco.
I agree. Let's have more action and less angst. I also agree that for someone of Supergirl's power she takes quite a beating. Ironically on the crossover episodes she was more powerful than on her own show.
It would have been perfect if they did defer that discussion at Kara's apartment because it was out of place at the DEO.
Winn was enough to be based on about the "telephatic connection" between human and white Martian if they really wanted to point that out. This was one of the unexplained thingsabout the Senator in Season 1 how the White Martian acted like the real Senator.
Personally I'm waving that one off.
Quoting Kelly:
The episode didn’t feel crammed - the stories seemed better interwoven and focused rather than the writing trying to service as many plots as possible in one go. And, more importantly, my hope of the writing getting back into Kara’s headspace was not held in vain. Recent episodes have been visually framing Kara as feeling alone and adrift and I’m glad they finally had her give words to that. It makes complete sense that Kara has abandonment issues and with her small circle of friends and family seemingly moving on with their lives and out of hers those underlying issues were compounded and it all came to a head.
Loved Alex and Kara’s conversations (my fave moments of the ep.) and J’onn & M’gann’s story was also very well executed. Ya, the writers should've found a way to have parts of these conversations NOT in the middle of impending doom, but it’s not an uncommon occurrence on TV shows. I’ve just learned to roll with it. (Look, I’d rather they have the conversations, even if I have to ignore the looming danger for a minute or two, than not have the conversations at all)
Hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of M’gann. It would be unfortunate to have finally gotten to the meat of her & J’onn’s story only for her to be gone permanently.
Extra points for the stunt work, especially Melissa’s Supergirl stunt double. *2 thumbs up*.
Nope, doesn't do it for me...Kara should have deferred that discussion to later after they had finished business...you don't have that kind of discussion when you need to take care of something that is going to happen in less than 15 minutes....does not work. That reason makes the White Martian look crafty and Kara look stupid. :/ bad writing...
