Its new comic book Wednesday! Today is a special Wednesday too! Supergirl is returning to the comic shelves in the Rebirth universe. Steve Orlando is now at the helm of the new Supergirl book which feels highly influenced by the show we all love. There are some similarities we would like to call out here but if you are looking to read Supergirl Rebirth yourself, consider the following a spoiler:
- Supergirl's uniform takes a lot from the show's suit, which in turn, takes a lot from classic Supergirl uniforms.
- Supergirl works at the D.E.O. which is headed up by Director Chase, who we met in season 1 but she was with the FBI at the time.
- Supergirl has adoptive parents named Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers, but they have been assigned to her through Director Chase.
- Eliza and Jeremiah work for the D.E.O. as well.
There are some items that are missing from the show but we hope they might show up in the future:
- Alex Danvers (who would be 17 years old or so, since Kara is 16 in the comics) is sadly missing.
- We've heard Cat Grant will return but she was not in this issue.
- No, Winn, James, or J'onn, at least in the way we know them.
Overall, we really enjoyed the issue and made a point to get the Adam Hughes variant cover. The tone of the entire DC Rebirth event has been noted to be more bright and Supergirl Rebirth certainly fell into that category. We don't want to spoil the story for you so we'll cut our review off here. But before we go, we want to remind you that Sterling Gate's original Supergirl run is also available again in printed collections. Even if you have or haven't read Adventures of Supergirl, we still highly recommend Gate's original Supergirl stories. They laid some of the groundwork for the show we know today. Helen Slater even wrote an intro in one of them.
